Preliminary Study of the Effects of a Dysphagia Support Group on Quality of Life.

PURPOSE: Dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) can greatly decrease quality of life for individuals with dysphagia and can lead to caregiver burden and third-party disability. Support groups have been shown to be effective in improving quality of life in a range of conditions, through allowing individuals to form connections with those with shared experiences and sharing and learning about relevant resources and coping skills. However, no research on the effects of dysphagia support groups on quality of life has been conducted. This preliminary study aimed to determine whether a virtual support

The Adverse Effects and Events of Thickened Liquid Use in Adults: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Practice pattern studies suggest that liquid modification is currently a primary strategy used by speech-language pathologists to manage dysphagia; however, the breadth of negative consequences associated with their use is not well understood. The purpose of this review was to summarize the evidence on adverse events and effects of thickened liquid (TL) use in adults. METHOD: Six databases were searched in February 2022: EMBASE, MEDLINE (PubMed), Speechbite, AMED, AgeLine, and CINAHL. Articles were included if they compared adults receiving different TL viscosities and discussed at l

Effects of oropharyngeal exercises on the swallowing mechanism of older adults: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Age-related changes to the swallowing mechanism, or presbyphagia, may put older adults at a higher risk for developing diseases and dysphagia. Maintaining swallowing functions could help prevent frailty and facilitate healthy ageing. This review summarises and appraises the effects of oropharyngeal exercises on the swallowing functions of healthy older adults without dysphagia. It is hypothesised that these exercises will strengthen and improve the structures and functions of the normal ageing swallow. METHOD: This review was reported according to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Five ele

In the thick of it: A commentary on the strength of evidence for thickened fluids.

PURPOSE: The efficacy of thickened fluids for individuals with dysphagia has come under increasing scrutiny among healthcare professionals. This commentary provides a critical appraisal of the research evidence and presents a balanced argument on the benefits and limitations of thickened fluids in dysphagia management. By doing so, we aim to engage the readership to think critically about this controversial topic and make informed, patient-centered decisions regarding the use of thickened fluids in dysphagia management. RESULT/CONCLUSION: We argue that, while the research evidence for the use

Using Reference Values to Identify Profiles of Swallowing Impairment in a Case Series of Individuals With Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury.

PURPOSE: In this article, we illustrate use of a systematic approach to rating videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS), the Analysis of Swallowing Physiology: Events, Kinematics and Timing (ASPEKT) method. The method is applied to a clinical case series of individuals with a history of traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI) requiring surgical intervention using a posterior approach. Previous studies suggest that swallowing is highly variable in this population given heterogeneity in mechanisms, location and extent of injury, and in surgical management approaches. METHOD: The case series invo

Characterizing Speech Phenotype in Individuals With Craniofacial Microsomia: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Craniofacial microsomia (CFM) is a complex congenital condition primarily affecting the ear, mandible, facial nerve and muscles, and tongue. Individuals with CFM are at increased risk of hearing loss, obstructive sleep apnea, and feeding/swallowing difficulties. The purpose of this scoping review was to summarize evidence pertaining to speech production in CFM. METHOD: All articles reporting any characteristic of speech production in CFM were included and screened by two independent reviewers by title, abstract, and full text. Data charting captured details related to study popu

Indexing Cognitive Resource Usage for Acquisition of Initial Voice Therapy Targets.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to index cognitive resource usage for acquisition of initial targets of two common voice therapy techniques (resonant voice therapy [RVT] and conversation training therapy [CTT]) based on the theorized depletion effect (i.e., when an initial task requiring high cognitive load leads to poorer performance on a subsequent task). METHOD: Eleven vocally healthy participants, ages 23-41 years, read aloud the Rainbow Passage and produced consonant-vowel resonant targets (/mi, ma, mu/) followed by a baseline computerized Stroop task and a 15-min washout. Followi
