The establishment and biomechanical analysis of finite element model for halo-pelvic traction in scoliosis correction.

BACKGROUND: Halo-pelvic traction (HPT) is increasingly used for severe spinal deformity correction, but its biomechanical mechanisms remain poorly understood, particularly lacking of a comprehensive finite element model incorporating the complete Halo-pelvic-spine-pelvis construct. This study aimed to establish a comprehensive halo-pelvic traction model and assess its biomechanical reliability. METHODS: A severe kyphoscoliosis (SS) model was created using patient CT data, reconstructed in Mimics, optimized in Geomagic Wrap, and assembled in UG12 for finite element analysis in Ansys. The Differences Between Same-Day and Staged (Circumferential) Fusion Surgery in Adult Spinal Deformity: Protocol for a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Adult spinal deformity (ASD) is a deformity in the curvature of the adult spine. ASD includes a range of pathology that leads to decreased quality of life for patients as well as debilitating morbidities. Treatment can range from nonoperative management to long-segment surgical corrections and depends greatly on the deformity and patient profiles. If surgical treatment is indicated, circumferential (a combined anterior and posterior approach) fusion is one of the tools in the spine surgeon's armamentarium. Depending on the complexity, the procedure is either completed on the same d

Sex differences in fatigability following exercise normalised to the power-duration relationship.

KEY POINTS: Knee-extensors demonstrate greater fatigue resistance in females compared to males during single-limb and whole-body exercise. For single-limb exercise, the intensity-duration relationship is different between sexes, with females sustaining a greater relative intensity of exercise. This study established the power-duration relationship during cycling, then assessed fatigability during critical power-matched exercise within the heavy and severe intensity domains. When critical power and the curvature constant were expressed relative to maximal ramp test power, no sex difference was

W-Transformer: Accurate Cobb angles estimation by using a transformer-based hybrid structure.

BACKGROUND: Scoliosis is a type of spinal deformity, which is harmful to a person's health. In severe cases, it can trigger paralysis or death. The measurement of Cobb angle plays an essential role in assessing the severity of scoliosis. PURPOSE: The aim of this paper is to propose an automatic system for landmark detection and Cobb angle estimation, which can effectively help clinicians diagnose and treat scoliosis. METHODS: A novel hybrid framework was proposed to measure Cobb angle precisely for clinical diagnosis, which was referred as W-Transformer due to its w-shaped architecture. Firs

A Chemical Biology Approach to Model Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia Type 1B (PCH1B).

Mutations of EXOSC3 have been linked to the rare neurological disorder known as Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia type 1B (PCH1B). EXOSC3 is one of three putative RNA-binding structural cap proteins that guide RNA into the RNA exosome, the cellular machinery that degrades RNA. Using RNAcompete, we identified a G-rich RNA motif binding to EXOSC3. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and microscale thermophoresis (MST) indicated an affinity in the low micromolar range of EXOSC3 for long and short G-rich RNA sequences. Although several PCH1B-causing mutations in EXOSC3 did not engage a specific RNA motif as

Multiple System Atrophy: Phenotypic spectrum approach coupled with brain 18-FDG PET.

OBJECTIVE: The 2008 diagnostic criteria classify Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) patients in a predominantly parkinsonian (MSA-P) or cerebellar (MSA-C) type. Phenotypic descriptions have since highlighted a clinical heterogeneity among patients (e.g., mixed-type, cognitive impairment, atypical longer survival). This study attempts to identify different phenotypes of patients with MSA and to describe corresponding brain 18-FDG Positron Emission Tomography (PET) patterns. METHODS: Patients with a "probable" MSA diagnosis for whom a brain 18-FDG PET was performed were included. A retrospective ana

The relationship between the type of destructive spondyloarthropathy and its 10 years ago cervical spine alignment.

The objective of this retrospective study was to analyze the relationship between the type of destructive spondyloarthropathy (DSA) and its 10 years ago cervical spine alignment. DSA was reported as a serious complication of long-term hemodialysis. Although previous reports in regard to risk factor of DSA dealt with the period of hemodialysis and the patient's age upon commencement of hemodialysis, we could not find any reports of the relationship between the type of DSA and its 10 years ago cervical spine alignment. In 96 DSA patients who were the subjects of our study, 8 patients were define

Toxic Effects of Polystyrene Microplastics and Sulfamethoxazole on Early Neurodevelopment in Embryo-Larval Zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics have emerged as contaminants of global concern, posing potential threats to ecosystem security and organismal health. To investigate the individual and combined toxicity of microplastics (PS-MPs) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), we conducted a 120 h acute exposure experiment using embryo-larval zebrafish as a toxicological model. Our findings demonstrate that both PS-MPs and SMX can induce neurodevelopmental toxicity in embryo-larval zebrafish during embryonic development. Notably, PS-MPs and SMX exerted a significant synergistic effect. PS-MPs 1 µm in diameter w

Combined nephrotoxic effects of fluoride, water hardness, and microcystin-LR associated with CKDu in Sri Lanka: a zebrafish (Danio rerio) model approach.

Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) is a major public health concern in several agricultural regions of Sri Lanka. In areas with a high prevalence of CKDu, elevated concentrations of fluoride and water hardness have been consistently reported in domestic wells, along with emerging evidence of cyanotoxin contamination. This study investigated the potential renal toxicity associated with environmentally relevant concentrations of fluoride, water hardness, and microcystin-LR (MC-LR) using a zebrafish (Danio rerio) model. Twenty groundwater samples were collected from the CKDu-endemi

Cannabidiol exposure during embryonic period caused serious malformation in embryos and inhibited the development of reproductive system in adult zebrafish.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive component of cannabis with potential applications in biomedicine, food, and cosmetics due to its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anticonvulsant properties. However, increasing reports of adverse CBD exposure events underscore the necessity of evaluating its toxicity. In this study, we investigated the developmental toxicity of CBD in zebrafish during the embryonic (0-4 dpf, days post fertilization) and early larval stages (5-7 dpf). The median lethal concentration of CBD in embryos/larvae is 793.28 μg/L. CBD exhibited concentration-dependent manner (ra

Asymmetric Load Transmission Induces Facet Joint Subchondral Sclerosis and Hypertrophy in Patients with Idiopathic Adolescent Scoliosis: Evaluation Using Finite Element Model and Surgical Specimen.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) with thoracic curvature primarily progresses from the thoracolumbar region, causing abnormal twisting and rotation of the spinal column. This results in unbalanced, asymmetric loads on each vertebrae and increased demands on the thoracic facet joints to withstand rotational stress from adjacent vertebrae. However, no studies have focused on the stress distribution on the facet joints of the thoracic spine in patients with AIS. This study aimed to investigate the mechanical loading and its distribution on the thoracic facet joints of AIS patients using fini

Predicting curve progression for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis using random forest model.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a three-dimensional (3D) spinal deformity characterized by coronal curvature and rotational deformity. Predicting curve progression is important for the selection and timing of treatment. Although there is a consensus in the literature regarding prognostic factors associated with curve progression, the order of importance, as well as the combination of factors that are most predictive of curve progression is unknown. OBJECTIVES: (1) create an ordered list of prognostic factors that most contribute to curve progression, and (2) develop and v

Complications in growth-friendly spinal surgeries for early-onset scoliosis: Literature review.

BACKGROUND: The treatments for early-onset scoliosis (EOS), defined as curvature of the spine with onset before 10 years of age, continue to pose a great challenge for pediatric orthopedics. The treatment goals for EOS include minimizing spinal deformity while maximizing thoracic volume and pulmonary function. Different surgical techniques have different advantages and drawbacks; however, the two major concerns in the management of EOS are repeated surgeries and complications. AIM: To review the current literature to assess the safety of EOS surgical treatment in terms of the rate of complica
