BACKGROUND: subacromial-subdeltoid chronic bursitis is one of the main causes of shoulder pain syndrome. There are various causes of shoulder pain syndrome including chronic bursitis. The sonographic appearances of chronic bursitis vary from patient to patient, depending upon the underlying cause. However, rice bodies are the rare sonographic presentation among them. Rice bodies can be associated with atypical mycobacterial tenosynovitis, bursitis, mycobacterium tuberculosis and infections, but very rarely occur in the chronic subacromial-subdeltoid bursitis. Its unique sonographic presentatio…

A significant difference was observed in MRI BME and bone erosion at 1 year, with higher mean score in patients with progression compared to non-progression of erosions (BM …

Background Surgical management of de Quervain's tenosynovitis is based on decompression of the first extensor compartment. A simple release of the first compartment can cause instability of the extensor pollicis brevis (EPB) and abductor pollicis longus (APL) tendons in zone seven of the extensors. The WHAT test (wrist hyperflexion and abduction of the thumb) is very effective in diagnosing this instability. Patients and Methods In this retrospective monocentric study, we analyzed a case series of 10 patients all of whom underwent a reconstruction of the first extensor compartment using a re…

UNLABELLED: Stenosing tenosynovitis or trigger finger is one of the most common disorders that affect the flexor tendon apparatus of the hand. Percutaneous release has been previously reported to be easier, quicker, less invasive and less costly than open surgery. The purpose of this study was to report the outcome of an alternative percutaneous trigger finger release technique. From March 2008 to January 2014, 92 patients (128 fingers) who underwent the alternative percutaneous trigger finger release, with a minimum of 6 months follow-up were included. Outcomes included size of skin incision,…

The peroneal tubercle is an osseous structure on the lateral side of the calcaneus present in 90% of individuals. Hypertrophy of the peroneal tubercle resulting in stenosing peroneal tenosynovitis has been well described in the literature. Repair of this condition involves operative treatment to remove the hypertrophied peroneal tubercle and repair any resulting tendon pathology. The authors report a unique case of a hypertrophied peroneal tubercle with an associated tarsal coalition, resulting in complete bony encasement of the peroneal tendons. In this case, a 50-year-old white man presented…

OBJECTIVES: To determine areas of agreement and disagreement among experts in the interpretation of the published criteria for RA (ACR) and spondylarthropathies ( ESSG).
METHODS: Thirty-two experts (16 from France and 16 from 10 other countries) replied anonymously to a mailed questionnaire.
RESULTS: Tenosynovitis and 'sausage-like' painless swelling of the toes were considered as criteria for RA by 18 and 14 experts, respectively. The definition of symmetry differed widely among experts (symmetry of only one group of joints was sufficient for 13). Twenty-five experts considered erosions of …

The authors report a series of thirty-six perforating ulcers of the foot in diabetic patients, evaluated using M.R.I. M.R.I. showed osteomyelitis in 16 cases, cellulitis in 15 cases, osteoarthropathies in 21 cases, tenosynovitis of flexor tendons in 2 cases, oedema in 2 cases and abscess in one case. In 19 cases, M.R.I. was used to improve diagnostic accuracy. The medical treatment made use of thermo-moulded soles allowing for the recovery of walking, with a hole facing the perforating ulcer of the foot. The application of insulin-soaked sponges in the event of clean perforating ulcer of the f…

A case of malignant giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath of the right hip, which developed in a 72-year-old Japanese woman, is described. The tumor exhibited histological similarities to a benign giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (localized nodular tenosynovitis). The resected tumor, measuring 9 x 9 x 11 cm, was located in the adductor muscle and invaded the proximal femur and acetabulum. The nodule was encapsulated with a thin membrane which was soft and gelatinous in consistency and varied in color from yellow to brown. The synovium of the hip joint was normal. The primary lesion was co…

Ninety five patients receiving chronic haemodialysis (CHD) were surveyed to determine the prevalence of rheumatic disease and, where possible, its aetiology. At least three distinct rheumatic syndromes were identified--a group of patients with a syndrome consisting of large and medium joint synovial swelling, restricted hips and shoulders, tenosynovitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and bone cysts due to deposition of beta 2 microglobulin related amyloid (AM beta 2m); a second group with erosive azotaemic osteoarthropathy; and a third group with age related degenerative disease of small, large, and…

BACKGROUND: Gonococcal infections are sexually-transmitted infections (STIs), which in 0.5-3 % of cases, can progress to disseminated infections (DGI). This study aimed to characterize the epidemiology of septic arthritis and tenosynovitis caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the two most common clinical manifestations of DGI (30-90 %).
METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted in two French referral hospitals from June 2014 to June 2024. Adult patients treated for septic arthritis due to N. gonorrhoeae with a positive culture of joint fluid were included.
RESULTS: We identified…

Although less common as causes of musculoskeletal infection than pyogenic bacteria, both Mycobacterium tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacteria can infect bones and joints. Although tuberculous arthritis and osteomyelitis have been recognized for millennia, infections caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria are being identified more often, likely because of a more susceptible host population and improvements in diagnostic capabilities. Despite advances in modern medicine, mycobacterial infections of the musculoskeletal system remain particularly challenging to diagnose and manage. This artic

Pansclerotic morphea is a rare subtype of localised scleroderma. Very few cases have been reported in the literature. This case discusses a young man with a 15-year history of pansclerotic morphea, illustrating the clinical course and complications of this disease. Notably, recurrent squamous cell carcinomas with several high-risk features and frequent cellulitis were the basis of many admissions. As often seen with this disease, autoimmune markers were negative. However, marked eosinophilia was noted late in the course. Furthermore, this disease is quite resistant to treatment. Immunosuppress

OBJECTIVES: Golf is a popular sport played by an estimated 57 million people. Previous studies on wrist injuries in elite golfers have been of simple design and have demonstrated such injuries to be frequent, although no studies report the incidence, variety, severity or impact on the activity of wrist injuries in detail. This prospective cross-sectional study assesses these factors in a cohort of elite professional golfers.
METHODS: European Tour golfers eligible to compete at the 2009 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth were studied. Study design involved the completion of a structured questi
