Contributing factors to declining vaccination campaign quality and resurgence of polio cases in Quetta block, Pakistan: a five-year analysis (2020-2024).

INTRODUCTION: Implementation of supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) delivering oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) to children under 5 years of age is a key strategy for interruption of poliovirus transmission. Quetta block (Quetta, Pishin, Chaman, and Killa Abdullah districts), which has the largest number of children under 5 years in Balochistan province, is a core reservoir for wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in Pakistan. This study examined the quality of polio SIAs and trends in WPV1 cases in Quetta block during 2020-2024. METHODS: We conducted descriptive analysis of administrative cov

Impact of a large-scale interactive and immersive science pop-up shop about infection and hygiene on visitors and volunteers.

Infectious diseases pose persistent and evolving challenges to global health, exacerbated by rising antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and vaccine hesitancy. The global public response to the COVID-19 pandemic underscored that scientific knowledge alone cannot drive behavioural change without trust, dialogue and meaningful social participation. Effective science communication and public engagement therefore require interactive, community-centred approaches that address social and cultural barriers and foster shared understanding and collective responsibility. This study describes the development a

Building better conversations: results of a community-based online health misinformation and motivational interviewing training program in Alaska.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by a proliferation of health misinformation, waning trust in health providers, and persistent vaccine hesitancy. To confront these challenges, a research team based in Alaska developed and pilot-tested an online training program called Building Better Conversations. METHODS: Between July and September 2022, we delivered a total of nine trainings to 116 community members in Alaska, including health professionals, nurses, public health students, and public information officers, among others. Content included COVID-19 recommendations, health

'COVID kills, and it's not joking around': Perceptions and experiences of COVID-19 in Soweto, South Africa.

The COVID-19 pandemic intensified existing social and gender inequalities, disproportionately affecting Black women living in communities like Soweto, South Africa. This paper primarily draws on qualitative data from 25 in-depth interviews conducted in 2021, complemented by descriptive survey data from 204 women collected between 2020 and 2021. We employed inductive thematic analysis guided by the socio-ecological model to examine how intersecting individual, interpersonal, community and societal factors shaped women's experiences during the pandemic. Women played vital caregiving roles, suppo

Fragile methods, fractured trust: rethinking scientific responsibility.

Science has a credibility problem, and it is not just the fault of politicians, journalists, or conspiracy theorists. It begins within science itself. This review examines how flawed methods and selective reporting, combined with overly polished communications that prioritise image over clarity, have normalised bad practice in molecular biology, diagnostics, and related applied sciences. The quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) offers a clear example: a conceptually simple, technically mature technology that is nonetheless routinely misused, despite published standards and r

The Politicization of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Political actors and institutions are largely responsible for effectively implementing the latest scientific and medical information in the form of public health measures. However, when politicians' judgments and decision-making are not founded on scientific facts or when scientific findings are misrepresented to further political goals, global crises such as pandemics may be even more galvanized. Like other scientific topics that entered public debate before 2020 (e.g., the debate on climate change), the COVID-19 pandemic has been heavily politicized worldwide. Consequently, COVID-19-related

Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Social Media Analysis for Pharmacovigilance of COVID-19 Vaccinations in the United Kingdom: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: The rollout of vaccines for COVID-19 in the United Kingdom started in December 2020. Uptake has been high, and there has been a subsequent reduction in infections, hospitalizations, and deaths among vaccinated individuals. However, vaccine hesitancy remains a concern, in particular relating to adverse effects following immunization (AEFIs). Social media analysis has the potential to inform policy makers about AEFIs being discussed by the public as well as public attitudes toward the national immunization campaign. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the frequency and nature of AEFI-rel

Beliefs in Misinformation About COVID-19 and the Russian Invasion of Ukraine Are Linked: Evidence From a Nationally Representative Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Detrimental effects of misinformation were observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Presently, amid Russia's military aggression in Ukraine, another wave of misinformation is spreading on the web and impacting our daily lives, with many citizens and politicians embracing Russian propaganda narratives. Despite the lack of an objective connection between these 2 societal issues, anecdotal observations suggest that supporters of misinformation regarding COVID-19 (BM-C) have also adopted misinformation about the war in Ukraine (BM-U) while sharing similar media use patterns and political

mRNA COVID-19 Vaccination Does Not Exacerbate Symptoms or Trigger Neural Antibody Responses in Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS), concern for potential disease exacerbation or triggering of other autoimmune disorders contributes to vaccine hesitancy. We assessed the humoral and T-cell responses to SARS-CoV-2 after mRNA vaccination, changes in disease activity, and development of antibodies against central or peripheral nervous system antigens. METHODS: This was a prospective 1-year longitudinal observational study of pwMS and a control group of patients with other inflammatory neurologic disorders (OIND) who received an mRNA vaccine. Blood samples were

Multi-label multi-class COVID-19 Arabic Twitter dataset with fine-grained misinformation and situational information annotations.

Since the inception of the current COVID-19 pandemic, related misleading information has spread at a remarkable rate on social media, leading to serious implications for individuals and societies. Although COVID-19 looks to be ending for most places after the sharp shock of Omicron, severe new variants can emerge and cause new waves, especially if the variants can evade the insufficient immunity provided by prior infection and incomplete vaccination. Fighting the fake news that promotes vaccine hesitancy, for instance, is crucial for the success of the global vaccination programs and thus achi

COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and preference for future delivery among language minority, newcomer, and racialized peoples in Canada: a national cross-sectional and longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Despite high COVID-19 vaccine coverage in Canada, vaccine acceptance and preferred delivery among newcomers, racialized persons, and those who primarily speak minority languages are not well understood. This national study explores COVID-19 vaccine acceptance, access to vaccines, and delivery preferences among ethnoculturally diverse population groups. METHODS: We conducted two national cross-sectional surveys during the pandemic (Dec 2020 and Oct-Nov 2021). Binary logistic regression analysis investigated the association between newcomer, language, and racialized minority respond

Overview of Selective National Guidelines and Clinical Recommendations for Childhood Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Prophylaxis: A Hong Kong Perspective for Asia.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections in infants and young children worldwide, with significant morbidity and healthcare burden in Asia. In Hong Kong, RSV seasonality and hospitalization rates underscore the urgent need for effective prophylactic strategies. Recent advances in maternal vaccination and long-acting monoclonal antibodies have expanded the armamentarium for RSV prevention. However, clinical guidelines across Asia remain heterogeneous, and parental hesitancy continues to limit uptake. To address these gaps, selectiv

"Just be honest with us": A qualitative analysis of Canadians' public trust during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: This qualitative study examines how trust has changed during and after the pandemic among our study participants. It reveals how they made meaning of trust in federal and provincial governments, scientific research, and digital platforms, and how this meaning-making process changed and was challenged by a global public health crisis. METHODS: We applied a descriptive phenomenological approach to semi-structured interviews that were conducted between July and November of 2024. In total, 41 interviews were conducted. Interview transcripts were analyzed using the descriptive phenomen

Community-driven policy recommendations for dengue prevention and control in Thailand: A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization roadmap targets the eradication of dengue, a neglected tropical disease. Community participation is crucial for successful control efforts, which must transcend technical solutions to engage and motivate the public. This study examined the needs, perceptions, and emotional drivers underpinning dengue prevention efforts and recommended tailored policies to control dengue in varied settings. METHODS: This mixed-methods study, using a triangulation design, was conducted in four geographical regions of Thailand between November 2023 and April 2024. Quanti

Uptake of infant and preschool immunisations in Scotland and England during the COVID-19 pandemic: An observational study of routinely collected data.

BACKGROUND: In 2020, the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic and lockdown control measures threatened to disrupt routine childhood immunisation programmes with early reports suggesting uptake would fall. In response, public health bodies in Scotland and England collected national data for childhood immunisations on a weekly or monthly basis to allow for rapid analysis of trends. The aim of this study was to use these data to assess the impact of different phases of the pandemic on infant and preschool immunisation uptake rates. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted an observational study using routin

Percutaneous extracorporeal life support for treatment of fatal mechanical complications associated with acute myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy has intensified since COVID-19. In Türkiye, a performance-based family medicine system provides free vaccines. Before May 2024, physicians could remove refusals from metrics tied to pay deductions, obscuring true rates. A new policy mandating documentation created a natural experiment. We used population-based data to quantify these previously hidden dose-specific refusal rates across the childhood schedule. METHODS: We conducted a population-based ecological analysis of monthly dose-specific refusals among children aged 0-59 months in Balıkesir Province, in 2024

Evaluation of a Motivational Interviewing-Based Training Programme in Vaccination Counselling for Family Physicians: A Pre-Post Study in Romania.

Background/Objectives: Motivational interviewing (MI) is an established approach to addressing vaccine hesitancy, yet immediate changes following dedicated training for family physicians remain insufficiently documented in Romania. This study evaluated pre-post changes in physicians' MI knowledge, self-reported communication behaviour, and self-perceived ability to counsel patients about vaccination, together with patient-level change following consultations delivered by trained physicians. Methods: This uncontrolled pre-post study used a voluntary, self-selected non-probability sample of 28 f

Improving vaccination uptake among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent vaccination has received increased attention since the Global Vaccine Action Plan's call to extend the benefits of immunisation more equitably beyond childhood. In recent years, many programmes have been launched to increase the uptake of different vaccines in adolescent populations; however, vaccination coverage among adolescents remains suboptimal. Therefore, understanding and evaluating the various interventions that can be used to improve adolescent vaccination is crucial. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of interventions to improve vaccine uptake among adolescen
