[Spatial contrast sensitivity and corneal higher-order aberrations after refractive surgery in children with hypermetropic anisometropia].

Spatial contrast sensitivity (SCS) was analyzed using mesopic (light off 10 candel/m2) and intensive illumination (light on 20,000 candel/m2) and corneal higher-order aberrations (CHOA) in 29 children with high-grade unilateral hypermetropia complicated by severe and moderate amblyopia after LASIK, Epi-LASIK, and intra-LASIK surgery. The values were comparable in the groups following 6 months under the intensive illumination and mesopic conditions at low and moderate frequencies. Under mesopic conditions, at high spatial frequencies, the values of SCS, as compared with the baseline values of 0…

Ocular manifestations of Turner's syndrome.

In a series of 24 patients with Turner's syndrome, amblyopia was found to be present in ten (41.6 per cent), strabismus in nine (37.5 per cent), hypermetropia in ten (41.6 per cent), ptosis in seven (29.1 per cent), and bilateral epicanthus in eleven (45.8 per cent) cases. Turner (1938) described a syndrome of infantilism, congenital webbed neck, and cubitus valgus, which has come to be known as Turner's syndrome. Since then many cases have been reported and multiple other associated features have also been recognized. Isolated ocular features have been mentioned in some sporadic case reports …

Visual Acuity Assessment in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Using a Child-Friendly Minimum-Separable Chart: A Five-Case Report.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have eye disorders, such as strabismus and amblyopia; thus, it is important to evaluate their visual function. However, achieving their cooperation for visual acuity testing is challenging. We developed a child-friendly minimum separable chart (CFMS chart) using meaningful pictures and two-choice answers. In this study, visual acuity tests were performed using both Landolt rings and CFMS charts in five children with ASD. For the Landolt ring test, only one patient was cooperative, whereas for the CFMS chart, all the patients were cooperative f…

Neuregulin directed molecular mechanisms of visual cortical plasticity.

Experience-dependent critical period (CP) plasticity has been extensively studied in the visual cortex. Monocular deprivation during the CP affects ocular dominance, limits visual performance, and contributes to the pathological etiology of amblyopia. Neuregulin-1 (NRG1) signaling through its tyrosine kinase receptor ErbB4 is essential for the normal development of the nervous system and has been linked to neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. We discovered recently that NRG1/ErbB4 signaling in PV neurons is critical for the initiation of CP visual cortical plasticity by controllin…

Effects of cortical damage on binocular depth perception.

Stereoscopic depth perception requires considerable neural computation, including the initial correspondence of the two retinal images, comparison across the local regions of the visual field and integration with other cues to depth. The most common cause for loss of stereoscopic vision is amblyopia, in which one eye has failed to form an adequate input to the visual cortex, usually due to strabismus (deviating eye) or anisometropia. However, the significant cortical processing required to produce the percept of depth means that, even when the retinal input is intact from both eyes, brain dama…
