Recent analysis of the juvenile (≤12 years) human remains from a 19th century site in Wolverhampton, England revealed a relatively high level of nutritional deficiency diseases within the population. Nutrition surveys suggest an association between the low intake of vitamin A, beta-carotene and cancer death. The prospective Basel study included as a part of its third investigation (1971-1973) the immediate analysis of all plasma vitamins. 2974 men were evaluated and all cancer deaths registered in a first phase until 1980 (n = 102) and in a second period until 1985 (total n = 204). The cholesterol turnover rate in rabbits with alimentary cholesterol atherosclerosis and in guinea-pigs with chronic vitamin C deficiency was studied by a one- and two-pool kinetic analysis. The one-pool analysis yielded exaggeraged values for the turnover rate, but the turnover rate differences between the control and experimental groups in the one- and the two-pool analysis were very similar. One-pool analysis can be used in initial studies to obtain preliminary data on the effect of nutritional, pharmacological and other factors on cholesterol turnover rate.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate a possible correlation between corneal ectasia and vitamin C deficiency.
METHODS: Case series.
RESULTS: This case series covers 3 patients with atypical features of corneal ectasia. All 3 had a peculiar general history and visited our tertiary ophthalmology department complaining about decreased visual acuity. Corneal tomography by Scheimpflug imaging (Pentacam) indicated an irregular astigmatism congruent with a corneal ectasia. A blood test diagnosed vitamin C deficiency.
