Catecholamine response to maximal exercise following 16 days of simulated microgravity.

INTRODUCTION: We tested the hypothesis that the elevated peak heart rate (HR) response to maximal exercise following microgravity exposure is associated with increased plasma levels of catecholamines. METHODS: To do this, plasma norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (E) were measured in venous blood samples obtained from 7 subjects before and immediately after graded supine cycle exercise to volitional fatigue performed prior to and at the conclusion of 16 d of 6 degrees head-down tilt (HDT). RESULTS: Resting HR was increased (p = 0.014) following HDT (56 +/- 3 to 63 +/- 2 bpm), but pre-exerci

The effect of tilted stripes in an optokinetic drum on gastric myoelectric activity and subjective reports of motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: The effects of tilted and vertical optokinetic drum stripes on self-reports of motion sickness and electrogastrograms (EGG's) were measured to investigate possible differences in the effects of stripe orientation. The EGG is a non-invasive measure of gastric myoelectric activity. The normal frequency is 3 cpm, and dysrhythmic 4-9 cpm activity, gastric tachyarrhythmia, has been found to be associated with motion sickness symptoms, particularly nausea. It is theorized that these symptoms are related to a sensory mismatch between the visual and vestibular systems elicited by the drum'

Metoclopramide does not inhibit atrial natriuretic factor-stimulated diuresis in man.

BACKGROUND: An understanding of the reflex hormonal responses that occur with a redistribution of the blood volume upon exposure to microgravity or during water immersion is operationally relevant. Further, dopamine receptor antagonists, which are used in the treatment of the motion sickness induced by microgravity, or at sea, may affect fluid metabolism. Atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) is a potent diuretic and natriuretic hormone that is released following central blood volume expansion in man. ANF is also a potent inhibitor of angiotensin- and potassium-stimulated aldosterone release. HYPOT

Motion sickness susceptibility to optokinetic rotation correlates to past history of motion sickness.

PURPOSE: This study investigated correlations between motion sickness susceptibility to a rotating optokinetic drum and past history of motion sickness. METHOD: There were 49 subjects who filled out a questionnaire on motion sickness history (MSH) who participated in the experiment. Each subject sat in an optokinetic drum for a 12-min baseline and a 12-min drum rotation period. Subjects' motion sickness symptoms (MSS) and electrogastrograms (EGG's) were measured. RESULTS: There were significant correlations between MSH scores and MSS scores during drum rotation (r = 0.5392, p < 0.001), and b

Perception of the medical risk of spaceflight.

We conducted an opinion survey to improve the characterization of medical risk during spaceflight, using a questionnaire designed to elicit space medicine experts' perceptions of the probability, health effect, and mission impact of selected medical events occurring during spaceflight missions of 30-90 d. This questionnaire was directed toward those events about which little data currently exist, therefore medical events that have occurred during spaceflights with some frequency, such as space motion sickness, were excluded from the questionnaire. The questionnaire was mailed to 99 clinical an

The effect of autogenic training and biofeedback on motion sickness tolerance.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is characterized by symptoms of vomiting, drowsiness, fatigue and idiosyncratic changes in autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses such as heart rate (HR) and skin temperature (ST). Previous studies found that symptoms of motion sickness are controllable through self-regulation of ANS responses and the best method to teach such control is autogenic-feedback (biofeedback) training. Recent experiments indicated that biofeedback training is ineffective in reducing symptoms of motion sickness or in increasing tolerance to motion. HYPOTHESIS: If biofeedback facilitates

Injury risk for research subjects with spina bifida occulta in a repeated impact study: a case review.

Spina bifida occulta (SBO) occurs in 18-34% of the normal U.S. population. Recently, 16.5% of normal, asymptomatic male soldier volunteer candidates in a U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory ride motion study were excluded from the study because they had SBO at one vertebral level. Disqualifying this percentage of screened research subject candidates threatened the timely completion of the schedule-intense protocol. Although one study suggests that SBO at spinal level S1 has a higher incidence of posterior disc herniation, the preponderance of clinical literature reports that spina bifida

Oxy-helium treatment for refractory neurological decompression sickness: a case report.

A 49-yr-old male presented with paraparesis and urinary incontinence that appeared 10 min after surfacing from a dive. Treatment was started on an extended USN table 6, but the symptoms persisted. Twenty-four hours later, he was treated with oxy-helium table CX-30, resulting in marked improvement in gait and in sensory and motor function. Urodynamic examination indicated an upper motor neuron lesion; bilateral decreased amplitude of the somatosensory evoked potential was found on stimulation of the tibial nerves; no response below the upper limbs was elicited on central motor conduction time (

Forehead skin temperature and thermal sensation during exercise in cool and thermoneutral environments.

BACKGROUND: The influence of forehead and mean skin temperature on thermal sensation during exercise in hot, cool, and thermoneutral environments is unclear. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that forehead temperature, in contrast to other skin sites, would contribute significantly to thermal sensation during exercise in hot, cool, and thermoneutral environments. METHOD: Volunteer males (N = 14) performed 30 min of constant load exercise on a cycle ergometer during which thermal sensation, skin and rectal temperatures, and heart rate were collected. Each subject participated in a control (24 degre

Effects of 28-day head-down tilt with and without countermeasures on lower body negative pressure responses.

This study was performed to determine the effects of 28 d of head-down tilt (HDT) (simulated weightlessness) on cardiovascular responses to orthostatic stress induced by lower body negative pressure (LBNP) (before, during, and after HDT) and +60 degrees head-up tilt (before and after HDT) in 12 subjects. Half of them underwent countermeasures (CM) of regular muscular exercise (isometric and isokinetic training) and LBNP sessions (-30 mm Hg) as generally performed during spaceflight; the other six were a control group (C). The countermeasure effect on the orthostatic responses to LBNP and tilt

Spaceflight results in depressed cancellous bone formation in rat humeri.

Two experiments investigating the effects of short-term spaceflight on cancellous bone turnover were carried out: Physiological Systems Experiment-1 (PSE-1) (a 4-d orbital spaceflight) and PSE-2 (a 10-d flight). Cancellous bone area was not significantly altered by spaceflight in the humerus during either flight. The calculated bone formation rate was unchanged during the 4-d flight but decreased during the 10-d flight. The decrease in calculated bone formation during the longer flight was due to a combination of a statistically significant decrease in mineral apposition rate and a nonsignific

Effect of alcohol on the threshold for detecting angular acceleration.

We investigated the effects of a low blood alcohol level (mean BAC = 0.037%) on subjects' ability to detect acceleration and deceleration of angular motion. The angular motion thresholds of six alcohol and six placebo subjects, all of whom had private pilot certificates, were tested under double-blind conditions in an enclosed simulator apparatus prior to drinking, after drinking, and at a time when the BAC's of alcohol subjects had reached zero. Mean threshold values for the three threshold determination sessions were 0.282, 0.376, and 0.343 degrees.s-2 respectively for the alcohol subjects,

Psychological functioning among members of a small polar expedition.

BACKGROUND: While depressed mood, insomnia, irritability and impaired cognition represent common responses to the physical and psychosocial stressors associated with polar environments, wide variations exist in their expression and the degree to which they adversely affect the health and performance of polar expeditioners. In particular, the process of successful adaptation to polar environments and the psychosocial characteristics associated with this process remains poorly understood. HYPOTHESIS: Psychosocial characteristics associated with successful coping with typical stressors are also

Preconditioning with sodium deficits to improve orthostatic tolerance in rats.

We hypothesized that prior deficits in total body sodium would improve the subsequent ability of non-hypovolemic rats to maintain arterial pressure when subjected to an orthostatic challenge. This hypothesis was based on similarities in the response of neurohumoral cardiovascular control systems to lower-body negative pressure and negative sodium balance. Sodium deficits were induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats for 7-8 d by feeding sodium restricted diets, or by administering furosemide daily. After this, rats were allowed to regain a positive sodium balance for 1 d by increasing dietary intak

The effects of motion direction, body axis, and posture on motion sickness induced by low frequency linear oscillation.

BACKGROUND: A recent experiment demonstrated that low frequency linear oscillation through the Z-axis of the body was more nauseogenic when applied in the vertical direction, with subjects seated upright, than in the horizontal direction, with subjects supine. HYPOTHESIS: The nauseogenicity of low frequency linear oscillatory motion is dependent on direction of motion with respect to the gravity vector, orientation of body axis with respect to motion, and body posture. METHODS: The following conditions were compared: A) seated upright, with horizontal motion, X-axis; B) seated upright, with
