Closing Knowledge Gaps on Global Budget of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) by Quantifying Indirect Emissions From Anthropogenic Nitrogen.

Human activities emit nitrogen oxides (NOx ≡ NO + NO2; with source emissions approximated as nitric oxide (NO)), potent air pollutants and short-lived climate forcers, through direct and indirect pathways. Unlike direct releases, however, indirect NOx emissions remain poorly understood and inadequately quantified. Here, by synthesizing available observations across global terrestrial ecosystems, we show that soil moisture and pH strongly affect the ratio of annual background NO to nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions ( R NO / N 2 O ), with a critical threshold at 46% water-filled soil pore space.

Climate and mammal host community characteristics drive tuberculosis maintenance at the wildlife livestock interface.

Animal tuberculosis (TB) is a zoonosis maintained by various domestic and wild mammals in complex episystems. Higher competent host species richness at the community level promotes infection maintenance. Consequently, it has been proposed to go beyond the classic one- or two-host systems, where only certain species were considered maintenance hosts, to address "maintenance communities" of multiple hosts with different levels of contribution to infection maintenance. A further factor in TB epidemiology is the environment. In the Iberian Peninsula, water availability has a strong influence on TB

The global risk of infectious disease emergence from giant land snail invasion and pet trade.

BACKGROUND: Pathogen outbreaks mostly originate from animals, but some species are more likely to trigger epidemics. The giant land snail (Lissachatina fulica) is a widespread invader, a popular exotic pet, and a notorious vector of the rat lungworm, causing eosinophilic meningitis in humans. However, a comprehensive assessment of the risks of disease outbreak associated with this species is lacking. METHODS: We assessed and mapped the risk of disease transmission associated with the invasion and pet trade of L. fulica. First, we conducted a review of the scientific literature to list all kno

Climate Change Impacts on the Distribution Patterns and Habitat Suitability of the Oriental Stork (Ciconia boyciana) in China: Implications for the "30 × 30" Conservation Targets.

The Oriental Stork (Ciconia boyciana), a wetland flagship species, faces threats from climate change and human activities. Assessing habitat suitability dynamics and identifying priority conservation areas are essential for implementing the "30 × 30" target of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. We integrated an optimized MaxEnt model with the HSI-InVEST habitat quality model to predict potential suitable habitats and key drivers for this species in China under current and future climate scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP5-8.5, 2041-2100), and delineated priority conservation a

Differential Effects of Soil Moisture and Air Temperature on Vegetation Dynamics in Northwest China's Warming and Wetting Region: An LSTM Modeling Approach.

Under the pronounced warming-wetting trend in Northwest China, understanding vegetation responses to the redistribution of hydrothermal resources is essential for interpreting regional ecohydrological processes. Here, we developed a bivariate Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model to simulate leaf area index (LAI) dynamics for four representative vegetation types (cold temperate forest, shrubland, grassland, and cropland), using air temperature and soil moisture as predictors. The model reproduces seasonal vegetation phenology well across vegetation types (R2 > 0.9), indicating that LSTM effectiv

Time series analysis of dengue incidence and its association with meteorological risk factors in Bangladesh.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease affecting tropical and subtropical regions. In Bangladesh, dengue fever remains a rising public health threat driven by meteorological factors. This study aimed to assess the temporal trends and how meteorological factors influence dengue incidence in Bangladesh from 2008 to 2024. Monthly reported dengue cases were analyzed using time series forecasting techniques and multivariate Poisson regression models. Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) models were used for forecasting. Correlation ana

Spatial Patterns and Impacts of Environmental and Climatic Factors on Canine Sinonasal Aspergillosis in Northern California.

Sinonasal aspergillosis (SNA) causes chronic nasal discharge in dogs and has a worldwide distribution, although most reports of SNA in North America originate from the western USA. SNA is mainly caused by Aspergillus fumigatus, a ubiquitous saprophytic filamentous fungus. Infection is thought to follow inhalation of spores. SNA is a disease of the nasal cavity and/or sinuses with variable degrees of local invasion and destruction. While some host factors appear to predispose to SNA (such as belonging to a dolichocephalic breed), environmental risk factors have been scarcely studied. Because A.

Association between the potential distribution of Lutzomyia longipalpis and Nyssomyia whitmani and leishmaniasis incidence in Piauí State, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniases are vector borne diseases caused by Leishmania spp. parasites transmitted by female sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) whose geographic distribution is influenced by environmental factors. Among the main tools for studying the distribution of vector species, modeling techniques are used to analyze the influence of climatic and environmental factors on the distribution of these insects and their association with human cases of the disease. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here, we used a multiscale ecological niche modeling approach to assess the environmental suitabilit

Association between Ambient Temperature and Ventricular Arrhythmias in Patients with Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators: A Time-Stratified Case-Crossover Study in China.

Ambient temperature has been recognized as an environmental trigger for adverse cardiovascular events. However, its association with ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) in patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) remains understudied, particularly in China. We conducted a time-stratified case-crossover study among a cohort of patients with ICDs from 2019 to 2024. Conditional logistic regression models, integrated with restricted cubic splines, distributed lag nonlinear models, and distributed lag linear models, were used to estimate the association between ambient temperature and

From Detection to Maps: A Review of Automated Urban Tree Mapping Using UAV and High-Resolution Satellite Data.

Urban tree mapping is necessary in environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation, and it depends heavily on the individual tree recognition and canopy segmentation to analyze city green cover. This systematic review discusses recent developments in the 2014-2026 mapping of these trees with the use of UAVs and high-resolution satellite imagery. Our preliminary selection of 4148 records reduced to 101 eligible publications following a systematic screening and synthesis of the records, assessed the efficiency of deep learning models such as Convolutional Neural Networks and Vision Tr

A sustainable system for predicting appliance energy consumption based on machine learning.

Nowadays, energy conservation is a top priority for sustainable societies, which focus on environmental and economic sustainability to address fossil fuel scarcity, climate change, and increasing environmental pollution. Therefore, planning for energy management and forecasting energy consumption is essential, especially with societies striving to achieve sustainable development. Predictive distribution plans for consumers and utilities can be improved using data mining-based models, the most common of which are big data-based Machine Learning (ML) models. This work presents a comprehensive ML

Flow-tub model: A modified bathtub flood model with hydraulic connectivity and path-based attenuation.

Global climate change and sea level rise are increasing the risks of flooding for coastal communities. Probabilistic coastal flood risk analysis at regional or global scales requires flood models with relatively low data requirements and low computational costs. Bathtub inundation models, which compute flood depth as the difference between water level and ground elevation, are well-suited for large-scale flood risk analysis. However, these models may overestimate floods because they do not capture some of the relevant underlying hydrodynamic processes that govern flood propagation on land. We

Age influences the thermal suitability of Plasmodium falciparum transmission in the Asian malaria vector Anopheles stephensi.

Models predicting disease transmission are vital tools for long-term planning of malaria reduction efforts, particularly for mitigating impacts of climate change. We compared temperature-dependent malaria transmission models when mosquito life-history traits were estimated from a truncated portion of the lifespan (a common practice) versus traits measured across the full lifespan. We conducted an experiment on adult female Anopheles stephensi, the Asian urban malaria mosquito, to generate daily per capita values for mortality, egg production and biting rate at six constant temperatures. Spanish Version of the Climate Change Anxiety Scale (CCAS-S): Adaptation and Validation Study.

The Climate Change Anxiety Scale (CCAS), developed by Clayton and Karazsia (2020), assesses the negative emotional impact of climate change on well-being. However, its psychometric properties have not yet been sufficiently explored for Spanish spoken in Spain and Spanish culture. This research introduces the Spanish version of the CCAS (CCAS-S), examines its psychometric properties, and provides validity evidence supporting its intended purpose. Two studies were conducted: first, the original version of the CCAS was translated into Spanish using a committee approach to translation design; seco

Reduced meat and dairy consumption improves health, environmental and most nutritional outcomes without increasing diet costs among Scottish adults.

Shifting diets away from high levels of meat and dairy is increasingly considered an important part of climate mitigation, yet the best pathways for achieving these reductions without compromising nutrition, health or affordability remain unclear. Here, in a representative sample of Scottish adults, we evaluate 33 pathways to meeting the UK Climate Change Committee's recommendations to reduce meat and dairy consumption by 20% by 2030, increasing to a 35% reduction in meat by 2050. The pathways incorporate existing dietary guidance, and modelled outcomes include intakes of 54 nutrients, obesity

Institutional supports and access inequities for deaf college students.

Deaf college students frequently encounter postsecondary environments where access is delivered through accommodations rather than through structural inclusion. This study investigates how deaf students experience three validated dimensions of campus climate, accommodating learning environments (ALE), campus connectedness (CC), and deaf-affirming climate (DAC), using data from 193 students at broad-access U.S. institutions. Descriptive, inferential, and exploratory modeling analyses show ALE is rated more positively than CC or DAC, with DAC emerging as the lowest-rated dimension, indicating pe

Innovative aspects of micropropagation in olive.

The olive tree is one of the most iconic species within the Mediterranean Sea Basin. Countries bordering this sea enjoy a favourable climate that contributes to high-quality agricultural production for numerous horticultural species. The quality of the propagation material is one of the most important factors in determining the value of the final product, regardless of the cultivation-model, climate, and soil characteristics. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure genetic and sanitary certainty of vegetal/propagation material, which can be achieved through nursery productions. These goals are base

Recovery of Sphagnum from drought is controlled by species-specific moisture thresholds.

As the largest terrestrial carbon (C) store, peatlands are vital to meeting climate targets. Sphagnum, a genus of ca. 350 species, sustains many peatlands through its high water content and chemistry which inhibits decomposition and vascular plant proliferation. However, many peatlands face increased risk of drought due to climate change, and how Sphagnum will respond and recover from drought is unknown. We measured moisture content, CO2 and methane (CH4) flux, and photosynthetic pigments in two species, S. palustre and S. squarrosum, over increasing drought (1-10 weeks) and recovery (1-10 wee

Elevated atmospheric CO2 decreases methylmercury production in freshwater lakes.

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) level reshapes microbial communities in nature, yet its consequences for neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) production in waters remain unclear. Here, we show that elevated CO2 levels (650 and 1000 ppm) consistently reduced net MeHg production across 45 freshwater lakes spanning 1200 longitudinal kilometers, particularly in eutrophic conditions (54-96%). Elevated CO2-driven shifts in carbon substrates favored hydrogenotrophic methanogens (e.g., Methanobacterium) lacking the hgcA methylation gene over hgcA-harboring acetoclastic strains (e.g., Methanosarci
