The effect of long-term aspirin intake on the outcome of non-surgical periodontal therapy in smokers: a double-blind, randomized pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this parallel, double-blind, randomized pilot study was to determine the effect of a daily dose of 325 mg of aspirin (ASA) on the clinical outcomes of scaling and root planing in a selected group of adult smokers. BACKGROUND: The response to periodontal therapy is inferior among smokers compared to non-smokers. Long-term intake of ASA has been shown to exert a positive impact on reducing both the prevalence and severity of periodontitis, among high-risk groups of subjects such as heavy smokers and diabetics. It is reasonable to assume that systemic administration o

Quinolinic acid and kynurenine pathway metabolism in inflammatory and non-inflammatory neurological disease.

Neurological dysfunction, seizures and brain atrophy occur in a broad spectrum of acute and chronic neurological diseases. In certain instances, over-stimulation of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors has been implicated. Quinolinic acid (QUIN) is an endogenous N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor agonist synthesized from L-tryptophan via the kynurenine pathway and thereby has the potential of mediating N-methyl-D-aspartate neuronal damage and dysfunction. Conversely, the related metabolite, kynurenic acid, is an antagonist of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors and could modulate the neurotoxic effects of QUI

Gastric Cancer Pre-Stage Detection and Early Diagnosis of Gastritis Using Serum Protein Signatures.

BACKGROUND: A gastric cancer (GC) diagnosis relies on histopathology. Endoscopy rates are increasing. Helicobacter pylori infection is a major GC risk factor. In an effort to elucidate abundant blood biomarkers, and potentially reduce the number of diagnostic surgical interventions, we investigated sera and biopsies from a cohort of 219 H. pylori positive and negative patients diagnosed with GC, gastritis, and ulcers. This allowed the comparative investigation of the different gastroduodenal diseases, and the exclusion of protein changes resulting from bacterial infection or inflammation of th

Inhibitory activity of traditional plants against Mycobacterium smegmatis and their action on Filamenting temperature sensitive mutant Z (FtsZ)-A cell division protein.

The study was designed to assess whether plant extracts / phytochemical (D-Pinitol) synergistically combine with antituberculosis drugs and act on Mycobacterium smegmatis (M. smegmatis) as well as assess their mode of action on Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) Filamenting temperature sensitive mutant Z (FtsZ) protein. Resazurin microtitre plate assay (Checker board) was performed to analyze the activity of plant extracts against M. smegmatis. Synergistic behaviour of plant extracts / D-Pinitol with Isoniazid (INH) and Rifampicin (RIF) were determined by time-kill and checker board assays. Elo

Reactive arthritis induced by intravesical BCG therapy for bladder cancer: our clinical experience and systematic review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Intravesical instillation of BCG (ivBCG) is an effective and safe immunotherapy of bladder carcinoma but it may have, as side effect, a reactive arthritis (ReA). The authors describe 5 cases observed during their own clinical experience along with the updated review of the literature on this topic. METHODS: Seventy-three papers were present in the world literature, each reporting almost 1 case for a total of 112 patients. However, the review focused on 61 papers, selected on the basis of reporting suitable for a correct clinical evaluation; thus, a total of 89 patients, including t

Neuropathologic substrate of cerebral palsy.

Animal models have assisted in understanding the mechanisms of brain injury underlying cerebral palsy. Nevertheless, no such models replicate every aspect of the human disease. This review summarizes the classic and more recent studies of the neuropathology of human perinatal brain injury most commonly associated with cerebral palsy, for use by researchers and clinicians alike who need to analyze published animal models with respect to their fidelity to the human disorder. The neuropathology underlying cerebral palsy includes white-matter injury, known as periventricular leukomalacia, as well

Infusional CDE with rituximab for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus-associated non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: preliminary results of a phase I/II study.

Infusional CDE (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, etoposide; iCDE) is one of the most effective chemotherapeutic regimen for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), with a complete remission rate of 46% and a median overall survival of 8.2 months (Sparano JA, Blood 1993; 81:2810). Since the majority of HIV-associated NHL are CD20-positive we reasoned that the addition of rituximab to iCDE (R-iCDE) could also improve the poor outcome of these patients. As a first step we investigated the safety of R-iCDE in a phase I/II study. Thirty patients with aggressive HIV

Interaction between the legionnaires' disease bacterium (Legionella pneumophila) and human alveolar macrophages. Influence of antibody, lymphokines, and hydrocortisone.

We have studied the interaction between virulent Legionella pneumophila and human alveolar macrophages, the resident phagocytes at the site of infection in Legionnaires' disease. L. pneumophila multiplied 2.5-5 logs within 3 d, as measured by colony forming units, when incubated with freshly explanted alveolar macrophages in monolayer culture. At the peak of bacterial multiplication, the alveolar macrophage monolayers were destroyed. L. pneumophila multiplied more rapidly in 4-d-old than in freshly explanted alveolar macrophages. Inside alveolar macrophages, L. pneumophila were located within

Conjunctivitis as sole symptom of COVID-19: A case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel virus causing an ongoing pandemic in 2020. Although the symptomatic patients infected by SARS-CoV-2 generally show respiratory distress, atypical manifestations such as conjunctivitis are also observed. A series of cases are reported in which reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing on tears had demonstrated the presence of the virus. However, the transmission of the virus through ocular fluids remains unknown. CASE DESCRIPTION: In this case report, the development of conjunctivitis i

Chinese herbal medicine for treating recurrent urinary tract infections in women.

BACKGROUND: Acute urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common bacterial infection that affects 40% to 50% of women. Between 20% and 30% of women who have had a UTI will experience a recurrence, and around 25% will develop ongoing recurrent episodes with implications for individual well-being and healthcare costs. Prophylactic antibiotics can prevent recurrent UTIs but there are growing concerns about microbial resistance, side effects from treatment and lack of long-term benefit. Consequently, alternative treatments are being investigated. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has a recorded history of

Cat-scratch disease. An overview based on a study of 1,200 patients.

This study by one individual of 1,200 patients with cat-scratch disease provides a heretofore unavailable realistic evaluation of a common infectious disease. All patients had lymphadenopathy, a prerequisite for diagnosis. Suppuration occurred in 11.8% of patients. Cat contact was established for 99.1%, and the cat was immature in the vast majority. An inoculation site, the most neglected feature in the study of the patients, was detected in 92.6%. The results of a skin test, considered as specific as the standard tuberculin test and to be safe but not standardized, was positive in 99%. The 12

Assessment of the anti-CD40 antibody iscalimab in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome: a multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: Primary Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease that presents as dryness of the mouth and eyes due to impairment of the exocrine glands. To our knowledge, no systemic therapies for primary Sjögren's syndrome have shown efficacy. CD40-CD154-mediated T cell-B cell interactions in primary Sjögren's syndrome contribute to aberrant lymphocyte activation in inflamed tissue, leading to sialadenitis and other tissue injury. Therefore, we investigated the safety and preliminary efficacy of iscalimab (CFZ533), a novel anti-CD40 monoclonal antibody, in patients with primary Sjögren's synd

In Vitro Characterization of the Immune Response to an Epitope Ensemble Vaccine Against Rhinovirus in Pediatric Asthma and Adults With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Protocol for an Observational and Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Human rhinoviruses (HRVs) are the leading cause of upper respiratory tract infections, responsible for over half of all such infections. Infection rates among young children can reach as high as 8-12 episodes per year. While HRV infections typically result in mild common colds, they can also lead to more severe respiratory conditions, often in conjunction with bacterial coinfections. In addition, HRVs are implicated in the exacerbation of obstructive respiratory diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). T-cell responses play a crucial role in the
