In a consecutive series of 25 coronary bypass operations, the postoperative serum activity levels of total creatine kinase (CK) and its more heart-specific isoenzyme CK-MB were examined and related to the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT), alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) and thermostable lactate dehydrogenase (LD-T), to electrocardiographic (ECG) findings and to surgical characteristics. Detectable CK-MB activity was found in all patients, usually appearing while the operation was still in progress. Peak CK-MB occurred earlier than peak total CK. There was no ECG evidence of myocardi

Digitalis is known to have a vasoconstrictor effect in the coronary circulation. Recent studies have demonstrated that the coronary vasoconstrictor effects of acetylstrophanthidin and digoxin are neurally mediated via alpha adrenergic fibers. In the present study, experiments were done in 20 dogs anesthetized with chloralose and urethane to study the central nervous system as a possible site of action for this vasoconstrictor effect of digoxin. After the intravenous administration of 1.0 mg digoxin, cerebrospinal fluid concentrations of digoxin rose to a peak of 2.3+/-0.4 (SEM) ng/ml at 15 min

Echovirus 19 (E19) is a rarely reported non-polio enterovirus (NPEV), although it has been associated with a spectrum of severe syndromes, including encephalitis, meningitis, and multisystem hemorrhagic disease in infants. Moreover, Echovirus 19 has been detected in patients with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), suggesting a potential association between viral infection and CNS damage. Here we describe molecular epidemiology of Echovirus 19 in Russia and Central Asia from 1999 to 2024 using data on poliomyelitis surveillance. Echovirus 19 accounted for no more than 4% of annual NPEV isolates, ho

Microbes and bile acids are tightly intertwined, especially in the gut. While the liver produces primary bile acids from cholesterol, gut bacteria transform these into diverse secondary forms which act as powerful signaling molecules. Since bile acid changes are increasingly linked to health and disease, their accurate measurement in the gut and circulation is essential. Bile acid analytical evaluations, however, are challenging as many co-elute in liquid chromatography (LC), share identical mass spectrometry (MS) precursor masses, and produce similar tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) spectra.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has emerged as the most prevalent chronic liver disease worldwide, characterized by complex pathogenesis and a lack of effective therapies. The bile acid (BA) "synthesis-transport-signaling" axis serves as a central hub integrating gut microbiota, host metabolism, and immunity, and its network dysregulation is a key driver of NAFLD progression. This review systematically elaborates how dysfunction of key enzymes, transporters, and receptors (e.g., farnesoid X receptor (FXR), Takeda G protein-coupled receptor 5 (TGR5)) within this axis drives hepatic st

Recent advances in xenotransplantation have gained substantial public and clinical attention as genetically modified porcine organs are now being transplanted into living human recipients. While only case reports have been published to date, the first clinical trials for kidney xenotransplantation are now ongoing. This transition to clinical practice presents multiple implementation challenges for establishing scalable transplant programs while ensuring patient safety. Machine perfusion is expected to play a critical role in addressing these challenges by serving as a central platform for orga

Adjuvants can stimulate the innate immune system independently of vaccine antigens. Elucidating their spatiotemporal distribution across biological scales and correlating this distribution with immune activation are of considerable significance. A cross-scale photoacoustic/fluorescence dual-modality imaging system was developed to enable dynamic tracking of the adjuvant from the cellular to the organismal level. Single-cell imaging results revealed that macrophages exhibited differential activation after the uptake of different adjuvants. Notably, high-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (PAM)

Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF), caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, is a fatal tick-borne disease endemic to southeastern Brazil. This study evaluates the eco-epidemiology of BSF in Santa Cruz do Escalvado, Minas Gerais, a region impacted by significant environmental changes following the 2015 Fundão dam collapse. We conducted serological and molecular surveys of mammals (n = 97) and ticks (n = 1,123) to assess pathogen circulation. Serological analysis revealed a 27.5% prevalence of anti-R. rickettsii antibodies in dogs, a marked increase compared to historical data (2% in 2009) from the same reg

ObjectivePeople with metabolic syndrome are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease, where alterations in peripheral circulation may take part. Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a noninvasive device for the detection of blood flow volumetric change. We performed finger PPG measurements with harmonic analysis in the elderly population to evaluate the influence of metabolic syndrome on the peripheral pulse waveform.MethodsIn this prospective cross-sectional study, 75 participants were categorized into three groups: healthy control, pre-metabolic syndrome (pre-MetS), and metabolic syndrome (Met

In extracorporeal therapies such as cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), the transport of blood through artificial circulation frequently results in the rupture of erythrocytes, releasing hemoglobin (Hb) into the plasma (fHb), and exhausting the body's supply of the natural fHb scavenger-haptoglobin (Hp). This complication, known as mechanical hemolysis, results in the release of fHb and its downstream heme-containing degradation products and is associated with multi-organ dysfunction and adverse outcomes. Current strategies for mitigating hemolysis in ex

Nanomaterial-based drug delivery systems (NDDS) have become enabling technologies for small-molecule reformulation, RNA medicines, vaccines, gene editing, immunotherapy, and regenerative therapeutics. Their clinical performance, however, is determined not only by cargo loading and release but also by protein-corona evolution, immune recognition, biological-barrier navigation, intracellular trafficking, manufacturing control, and regulatory fit. This review provides a cross-platform comparison of lipid nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles, inorganic nanomaterials, extracellular vesicles (EVs)

Arboviral diseases are undergoing substantial epidemiological changes driven by climate change, urbanization, global mobility, vector expansion, and evolving ecological conditions. These processes increasingly favor the geographic overlap and co-circulation of multiple arboviruses, including in regions previously considered at limited risk. In this review, we describe this broader process as epidemiological convergence, referring to the progressive overlap of arboviral transmission systems across shared geographic, ecological, vector, host, and public health contexts. Such convergence creates

Toxoplasma gondii is a foodborne protozoan that poses significant health risks to both animals and humans. Raw milk contaminated with T. gondii has been identified as a potential infectious source for humans. This cross-sectional study investigated the occurrence of T. gondii in raw milk from domestic ruminants and in the serum pregnant women in Aswan, Upper Egypt. A total of 250 milk samples collected from various lactating domestic ruminants and 90 serum samples from pregnant women were examined using ELISA (IgG and IgM) and PCR. Overall, 31.2% of milk samples were seropositive, and 21.6% we

In recent years, many countries have experienced increased outbreaks of vector-borne diseases, such as West Nile virus (WNV). WNV is primarily transmitted to humans by the bite of infected Culex mosquitoes and has an enzoonotic transmission cycle involving birds. In Algeria, serological evidence of WNV in humans dates back to the 1970s, but circulation patterns are poorly characterized. To address this, we conduct a cross-sectional seroprevalence survey of WNV in humans and fit serocatalytic models to the data. We also analyze data on severe WNV cases. In this study, we report a seroprevalence

Parent Artery Occlusion (PAO) is a valid treatment choice in giant internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysms of the cavernous segment when the preoperative balloon test occlusion (BTO) demonstrates an adequate cross circulation from the contralateral side. A high flow arterial bypass is, however, mandatory if the result suggests otherwise or is indeterminate. We present here a case of a 72-year lady where the BTO results were inconclusive. Rather than proceeding for the ICA ligation and a high flow bypass straight away, we replicated the BTO in the operation theatre, using intraoperative electro…

In humans, the bioactivity of polyphenols is highly dependent on dose intake and their interactions with the gastrointestinal tract and gut microbiota, which metabolize polyphenols into bioactive or inactive derivatives. Polyphenols are only partially absorbed in the small intestine, where enzymatic hydrolysis releases aglycone forms that may cross the gut barrier. A significant proportion of polyphenols escapes absorption and reaches the colon, where resident microbes convert them into simpler phenolic metabolites. Such molecules are often more bioavailable than the parent compounds and can e

Influenza viruses are major threats to global health, with potential to cause widespread disease in both humans and animals. Cattle, once considered resistant, are susceptible hosts for multiple influenza viruses, including influenza A, C and D, while no evidence currently supports infection with influenza B virus. Cattle serve not only as natural reservoirs for influenza D virus but also as emerging spillover hosts for highly pathogenic avian influenza A strains like H5N1. Their role in sustaining viral circulation, facilitating interspecies transmission, and potentially contributing to viral

Wastewater-based epidemiology is a robust, scalable, cost-effective, and high-performing tool to monitor and predict SARS-CoV-2 trends. We aimed to investigate whether this approach could be applied to influenza A/B viruses and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in Marseille, southern France. Wastewater concentrations of SARS-CoV-2, influenza A/B viruses, and RSV in Marseille were monitored by qPCR between January 2021 and October 2024. These concentrations were compared with the diagnosis numbers for the three viruses collected at public hospitals in Marseille, using cross-correlation analyses

BACKGROUND: Arachnoid granulations are extensions of the subarachnoid space, an important component of the complex circulation of brain cerebrospinal fluid. While these structures primarily transmit cerebrospinal fluid into the dural venous sinuses, they also may serve as a conduit for brain tissue herniation. Such occurrences have been referred to in the literature as brain herniations into arachnoid granulations (BHAGs), which are considered incidental and asymptomatic but can be associated with nonspecific neurologic symptoms such as headache, tinnitus, vertigo, and seizure. BHAGs can be vi
