A retrospective analysis of 182 HIV positive Malaysians was done in two centers, the University Hospital Kuala Lumpur (UHKL) and the General Hospital Kuala Lumpur (GHKL) from March 1997 to February 1998. Demographic and clinical data were analyzed. The analysis showed that 130 out of 182 patients had mucocutaneous disorders (71.4%). In the study there were 125 males (96.2%) and 5 females (3.8%). Ninety adult patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and 27 with AIDS-related complex were seen consecutively, when available, either as inpatients or in AIDS clinics and given complete cutaneous examinations. Hidroacanthoma simplex (HAS) is a rare benign eccrine adnexal tumor. HAS is sometimes clinically or pathologically misdiagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma in situ (Bowen's disease; BD), seborrheic keratosis (SK) or other adnexal tumor. Cutaneous symptoms (seborrhoea and hyperhidrosis) in Parkinson's disease were investigated. In 70 treated patients with Parkinson's disease and 22 control subjects, non-invasive bioengineering methods (sebumetry, corneometry, pH) were carried out on the forehead, sternum and forearm. The cutaneous changes typical of patients, who are alcohol misusers have been reported in this study. We discuss also certain skin disorders which seem to be affected by alcohol misuse. We made an attempt to explain the ways of the influence of alcohol on mentioned skin diseases. It seems some skin disorders may be markers of alcohol misuse. Physicians who see patients with these particular diseases should be aware that there is a greater chance a patient is also an alcoholic. This additional risk factor needs to be considered when physicians design a treatment strategy.

As neonates have a high sebum production compared with 6-month-old babies, we wished to investigate the relationship of sebum production in mother and neonate. The sebum excretion rate (SER) was therefore measured in 10 mothers prenatally, and in each mother and baby as soon after birth as possible, and again 5-12 weeks postnatally.
