Quantification of cerebral oxygenation and haemodynamics in sick newborn infants by near infrared spectrophotometry.

New apparatus was made whereby indices of cerebral oxygenation and haemodynamics in sick newborn infants could be quantified by near infrared (NIR) spectrophotometry and displayed instantaneously at the cotside. The indices included oxygenated haemoglobin, reduced haemoglobin, oxidised cytochrome aa3, and total haemoglobin concentration: cerebral blood volume, mixed cerebral venous saturation, and changes in cerebral blood flow were then derived. Striking changes were observed in response to alterations in arterial oxygen saturation and carbon dioxide tension and to tilting of the infant. Abno

Antagonism of cyanide poisoning by chlorpromazine and sodium thiosulfate.

Anti-cyanide action by sodium thiosulfate (ST) was enhanced by prior administration of chlorpromazine (CPZ). However, CPZ (alone) provided no protection against cyanide lethality. To investigate the possibility that CPZ enhances thiocyanate formation in ST-pretreated mice, the effects of CPZ on rhodanese activity and the time course of plasma thiocyanate concentrations were investigated. CPZ did not alter hepatic rhodanese kinetics nor did it enhance plasma thiocyanate concentrations in ST-pretreated mice. The effect of CPZ and ST on the time course of cytochrome oxidase inhibition and recover

The significance of enzyme histochemical patterns in carcinomas of the large intestine in man.

The activities of 13 enzymes in 40 carcinomas of the large bowel have been studied using histochemical techniques. Five enzymes-non-specific esterase, monoamine oxidase, succinate dehydrogenase, cytochrome oxidase, and acid phosphatase-commonly show much less activity in the tumours than in adjacent normal colon. The tumours have been classified based upon the number of enzymes which show marked reduction in activity in each tumour (types 1-5). The enzyme histochemical type and the size of the tumours have been jointly correlated with the presence of lymph node metastasis. Small type 1 or 2 tu

Histopathological, molecular, and phylogenetic analyses of Echinococcus species isolated from humans in Mongolia, 2010-2024.

Echinococcosis in humans caused by hydatid cyst of Echinococcus spp., remains a significant public health concern in Mongolia. In this study, we aimed to characterize the epidemiology, histopathological features, and molecular diversity of Echinococcus isolates from human infections. A retrospective analysis of surgically confirmed cases diagnosed between 2010 and 2024 was conducted. A histopathological examination of resected or biopsied cyst material was employed to assess cyst morphology and associated tissue responses. Molecular identification was performed using PCR amplification and sequ

FIRST MORPHOLOGICAL AND MOLECULAR DESCRIPTION OF ANATRICHOSOMA SP. (NEMATODA: TRICHOSOMOIDIDAE) IN THE NASAL CAVITIES OF A SHEEP (OVIS ARIES) FROM SARDINIA (ITALY).

Cases of parasitic infection by Anatrichosoma spp. have occasionally been reported worldwide in a narrow range of host species, including humans. The species in which Anatrichosoma has been most commonly reported are nonhuman primates; among domestic animals, infections have only been reported in dogs and cats. Many aspects of the biological cycle and epidemiology of the parasite are still unknown. In the present study, we report the case of Anatrichosoma sp. infection in the nasal cavities of a sheep (Ovis aries) raised in Sardinia (Italy). After sagittal cutting of the sheep's head, 12 adult

First Record of a Polystome from Alligator Snapping Turtle, Macrochelys temminckii (Cryptodira: Chelydridae) or Mississippi; with Comments on "Neopolystoma orbiculare (Stunkard, 1916)" and Its Junior Subjective Synonyms.

Herein, we describe several newly-collected specimens of Neopolystoma cf. orbiculare from the urinary bladder of 2 alligator snapping turtles, Macrochelys temminckii (Troost in Harland, 1835) (Cryptodira: Chelydridae Gray, 1831) from Comet Lake (30°35'46.94″N, 88°36'3.12″W), Pascagoula River, Mississippi. Our specimens differed from all previous descriptions of N. orbiculare and its junior subjective synonyms by the combination of having intestinal ceca adorned with triangular pockets and that terminate dorsal to the haptor, distinctive hooklets each having a handle and guard of approximately

Dispersal and molecular characterisation of the Echinococcus granulosus (Batsch, 1786) complex isolated from various intermediate hosts in the Calabria region, southern Italy.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disease caused by the tapeworms of the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato complex, which have worldwide distribution. No data on the circulation of genotypes of the E. granulosus complex in intermediate hosts in endemic areas in Calabria are available. The aims of our study were to evaluate the dispersal of genotypes of the E. granulosus complex in Calabria and to characterise parasite isolates by Sanger sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. We collected 71 animal samples from pigs, wild boars, sheep, cattle and goats. The first PCR screening analysis t

Murine cytomegalovirus infection exacerbates complex IV deficiency in a model of mitochondrial disease.

The influence of environmental insults on the onset and progression of mitochondrial diseases is unknown. To evaluate the effects of infection on mitochondrial disease we used a mouse model of Leigh Syndrome, where a missense mutation in the Taco1 gene results in the loss of the translation activator of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (TACO1) protein. The mutation leads to an isolated complex IV deficiency that mimics the disease pathology observed in human patients with TACO1 mutations. We infected Taco1 mutant and wild-type mice with a murine cytomegalovirus and show that a common viral infec

First molecular identification of an agent of diplostomiasis, Diplostomum pseudospathaceum (Niewiadomska 1984) in the United Kingdom and its genetic relationship with populations in Europe.

Trematode genus Diplostomum comprises of parasitic species which cause diplostomiasis, the 'white eye' disease in fish and heavy infection can result in mortality. The increasing availability of DNA sequences of accurately identified Diplostomum species on public data base presently enables the rapid identification of species from novel sequences. We report the first molecular evidence of the occurrence of D. pseudospathaceum in the United Kingdom. Two gene regions, nuclear internal transcribed spacer cluster (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) of cercariae

Central European parasitic flatworms of the Cyclocoelidae Stossich, 1902 (Trematoda: Plagiorchiida): molecular and comparative morphological analysis suggests the reclassification of Cyclocoelum obscurum (Leidy, 1887) into the Harrahium Witenberg, 1926.

Cyclocoelidae Stossich, 1902 are medium-sized to large digenean bird parasites. Although these parasites bear few visible autapomorphic signs, and their diagnostic characters are unstable in response to the pressure applied during preparation, the numerous hitherto suggested re-classifications within the family have not been supported by any molecular analysis. We analyse here cyclocoelids found during the extensive examination of central European birds performed from 1962 to 2016, provide comparative measurements, host spectra, prevalence and intensity, and provide and analyse sequences of fo

Taxonomy and phylogeny of Trichuris globulosa Von Linstow, 1901 from camels. A review of Trichuris species parasitizing herbivorous.

At the present work, we carried out a morph-biometrical and molecular study of Trichuris species isolated from Camelus dromedarius from Iran and from Ovis aries from South Africa comparatively with other species of Trichuris from different herbivorous hosts and geographical regions. The population from camels from Iran was identified as Trichuris globulosa. Two different morphometrically populations of Trichuris sp. from sheep from South Africa were identified: Trichuris ovis and Trichuris skrjabini. Ribosomal data did not reveal significate differences in the ITS2 sequences between T. ovis an

Phylogenetics of the phlebotomine sand fly group Verrucarum (Diptera: Psychodidae: Lutzomyia).

Within the sand fly genus Lutzomyia, the Verrucarum species group contains several of the principal vectors of American cutaneous leishmaniasis and human bartonellosis in the Andean region of South America. The group encompasses 40 species for which the taxonomic status, phylogenetic relationships, and role of each species in disease transmission remain unresolved. Mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) phylogenetic analysis of a 667-bp fragment supported the morphological classification of the Verrucarum group into series. Genetic sequences from seven species were grouped in well-supporte

Differential impact of copper deficiency in rats on blood cuproproteins.

Sensitive blood biochemical markers of dietary copper status are not yet known. Rat models were used to investigate the response of severe copper deficiency in dams and pups by comparing abundance of several cuproproteins in erythrocytes, white blood cells, and platelets. The hypothesis tested was that copper deficiency would result in changes in abundance of cuproproteins in blood cells. Copper-deficient (CuD) Holtzman dams and pups had signs consistent with severe copper deficiency compared with copper-adequate controls including lower liver copper and hemoglobin levels and near total loss o
