Conditions under which chlordiazepoxide influences gustatory contrast.

Rats shifted from 32% sucrose to 4% sucrose consumed less 4% than animals without prior experience with 32% sucrose. The influence of chlordiazepoxide (CDP) on this successive negative contrast obtained in sucrose ingestion was investigated in four experiments. The results indicated that (1) rats injected with CDP during both preshift experience with 32% sucrose and post-shift experience with 4% sucrose showed an essentially unchanged contrast effect compared with saline-injected rats, (2) CDP injection for the first time on post-shift day 2 eliminated contrast but post-shift day 1 injections

[Parasitic contacts between the great, red-tailed and midday gerbils in the Muyun-Kum].

Interspecies epizootic parasitic contacts between rodents, bearers of plague in Mujunkums, have been studied. Rhombomys opimus, Meriones meridianus and M. libicus were marked with different radioactive isotopes. A bilataral exchange with fleas between great gerbils and rodents of the genus Meriones has been established. The exchange proceeded in the direction from rodents of the genus Meriones to great gerbils. Theoretically each rodent of Meriones meridianus and M. libicus fallen ill with plague can transmit within 24 hours one "blocked" flea to a great gerbil. In autumn three of ten animals

Studies on the flight range and dispersal of Simulium damnosum (Diptera: Simuliidae) in the rain-forest of Cameroon.

Five marking/recapture experiments were carried out on Simulium damnosum in the rain-forest of the United Republic of Cameroon, in order to determine the regression in biting density at increasing distances from the marking point. Flies were captured unfed, marked with fluorescent dust, and then released on the bank of a large river. Recaptures were made over the six-seven days after marking, at seven stations situated from 200 m to 79 km along a large river, from the marking site. Marked flies, which showed fluorescent pigment when examined under an ultraviolet lamp, were recovered at all sev

Modeling diurnal rumen metabolism dynamics in dairy cattle: An update to a mechanistic model representing eating behavior, rumen content, rumination, and acid-base balance.

Eating and rumination activities influence rumen environmental characteristics, such as volume, digesta particle size, microbial activity, and the acidity of rumen fluid. The aim of this study was to update an existing mechanistic, steady-state rumen model to simulate diurnal patterns of rumen functioning, contributing to a better understanding of rumen metabolism. Daily patterns of eating behavior were defined as model inputs based on meal characteristics and feeding regimens. Mechanisms controlling the dynamics of rumen content and fluid volume, particle diminution of roughage, rumination be

Active but not passive passengers: Persistent-propagative plant viruses manipulate insect vectors for efficient transmission.

Most plant viruses rely on insect vectors for transmission. In general, nonviruliferous vectors acquire viruses from infected plants, whereas viruliferous vectors subsequently move to uninfected plants for virus inoculation. However, they are not merely passive passengers within their vector. Persistent-propagative plant viruses, which invade and replicate in insect vectors, can actively and directly reshape their physiology, morphology, and feeding behavior to facilitate efficient transmission. Recent studies have uncovered both indirect plant-mediated mechanisms and direct vector-targeted me…

Sublethal abamectin exposure alters intraguild predation and population structure of predatory mites.

Chemical contaminants can disrupt predator-prey dynamics in agroecosystems, particularly through intraguild predation (IGP), a key interaction influencing population structure and dynamics. The objective of this study was to investigate intraguild predation between Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) and Euseius alatus DeLeon (Mesostigmata: Phytoseiidae), with particular emphasis on how an extraguild food resource (pollen), sublethal exposure to the acaricide abamectin, and their combined effects influence predator feeding behavior, oviposition, and population dynamics. Adult females of both predator…

The gut-brain axis mechanism of normal appetite induced by kynurenic acid.

Feeding is essential for both host-organism survival and gut-microbiota maintenance. Our research focuses on how kynurenic acid (KYNA), a gu … controls appetite during fasting, highlighting the complex relationship between microbial and host feeding behavior.

Transient cAMP production drives rapid and sustained spiking in brainstem parabrachial neurons to suppress feeding.

Brief stimuli can trigger longer-lasting brain states. G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) could help sustain such states by coupling slow-timescale molecular signals to neuronal excitability. Brainstem parabrachial nucleus glutamatergic (PBNGlut) neurons regulate sustained brain states such as pain and express Gs-coupled GPCRs that increase cAMP signaling. We asked whether cAMP in PBNGlut neurons directly influences their excitability and effects on behavior. Both brief tail shocks and brief optogenetic stimulation of cAMP production in PBNGlut neurons drove minutes-long suppression of feedin

Tick hemocytes have a pleiotropic role in microbial infection and arthropod fitness.

Uncovering the complexity of systems in non-model organisms is critical for understanding arthropod immunology. Prior efforts have mostly focused on Dipteran insects, which only account for a subset of existing arthropod species in nature. Here we use and develop advanced techniques to describe immune cells (hemocytes) from the clinically relevant tick Ixodes scapularis at a single-cell resolution. We observe molecular alterations in hemocytes upon feeding and infection with either the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi or the rickettsial agent Anaplasma phagocytophilum. We reveal he

The Circadian Clock and Obesity.

The modern way of life has dramatically affected our biological rhythms. Circadian rhythms, which are generated by an endogenous circadian clock, are observed in a large number of physiological functions including metabolism. Proper peripheral clock synchronization by different signals including appropriate feeding/fasting cycles is essential to coordinate and temporally gate metabolic processes. In this chapter, we emphasize the importance of nutrient sensing by peripheral clocks and highlight the major role of peripheral and central clock communication to locally regulate metabolic processes

A medullary centre for lapping in mice.

It has long been known that orofacial movements for feeding can be triggered, coordinated, and often rhythmically organized at the level of … g volitional lapping. Our study identifies one of the subcortical nuclei underpinning a stereotyped feeding behavior.

Immediate postoperative evaluation of the surgical wound and nutritional evolution after cheiloplasty.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the nutritional status and behavior of the surgical wound following cheiloplasty. SETTING: Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies, University of São Paulo (HRAC/USP), Bauru, São Paulo, Brazil. PARTICIPANTS: Forty-five nursing children aged 3 to 13 months old, either bottle-fed or spoon-fed, submitted to cheiloplasty during the study period. RESULTS: The results did not demonstrate significant differences between the study groups regarding gender, age, nutritional status, and condition of the surgical wound. Upon completion of the study, the infants of b

Dopamine transporter SPECT in patients with mitochondrial disorders.

The effect of long-term West Nile virus (WNV) infection on Culex salivary gland morphology and viability was evaluated by transmission elect … meal acquisition and virus delivery, salivary gland pathology has the potential to affect mosquito feeding behavior and virus transmission. Results from this study add to a growing body of evidence that arbovirus infections in mosquito vectors can be cytopathic, and offer a potential mechanism for virus-induced cell death in mosquitoes.
