The effect of drought on physiological and agronomic traits of tef [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter].

Increased intensity and duration of drought as a consequence of global warming is resulting in increased crop failure and food insecurity. This is particularly prevalent in regions where agriculture is rain fed, as the resultant water deficit in crop tissues as a consequence of insufficient soil moisture to sustain metabolic integrity results in subcellular damage and, ultimately tissue death. Different plants can perceive moisture stress stimuli from their environment and develop adaptive mechanisms to cope with water stress. However, the response of tef [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter], a st…

Perceptions of the national school holiday programme (Holiday Activities and Food) in England as experienced by local government, service providers and users of the service: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: School holidays can be a period of isolation and difficulty for children from low-income families. Limited opportunities for enrichment activities, and food insecurity, mean that children's health and well-being can suffer. There is also potential learning loss, particularly during longer holiday periods. The Holiday Activities & Food (HAF) programme is a government-funded (> £200 M/y) initiative in England which aims to provide healthy meals and activities to free school meal (FSM)-eligible children during school holidays. Existing evaluations of the programme have identified vari…

Dislike of the taste of RUF (aOR = 5.0, 95% CI: 2.0-12.3), HIV non-disclosure (5.1, 1.9-13.9) and food insecurity (2.8, 1.1-7.2) were the major risk factors associated with sub-optimal RUF intake at week 2. FGDs showed that the need to hide from others to avoid sharing and undesirable effects were other constraints on RUF feeding. CONCLUSIONS: This study revea …

Durability of effects from short-term economic incentives for clinic attendance among HIV positive adults in Tanzania: long-term follow-up of a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Conditional economic incentives are shown to promote medication adherence across a range of health conditions and settings; however, any long-term harms or benefits from these time-limited interventions remain largely unevaluated. We assessed 2-3 years outcomes from a 6-month incentive programme in Tanzania that originally improved short-term retention in HIV care and medication possession. METHODS: We traced former participants in a 2013-2016 trial, which randomised 800 food-insecure adults starting HIV treatment at three clinics to receive either usual care (control) or up to

Factors are not the same for risk of stopping exclusive breast-feeding and introducing different types of liquids and solids in HIV-affected communities in Ghana.

Exclusive breast-feeding (EBF) for 6 months supports optimal infant growth, health and development. This paper examined whether maternal HIV … ight-for-age Z-score was associated with EBF and introducing formula. Different factors (ethnicity, food insecurity, HIV testing strategy) were associated with the various feeding behaviours, suggesting that diverse interventions are needed to promote optimal infant feeding.
