Surface-based labeling of cortical anatomy using a deformable atlas.

We describe a computerized method to automatically find and label the cortical surface in three-dimensional (3-D) magnetic resonance (MR) brain images. The approach we take is to model a prelabeled brain atlas as a physical object and give it elastic properties, allowing it to warp itself onto regions in a preprocessed image. Preprocessing consists of boundary-finding and a morphological procedure which automatically extracts the brain and sulci from an MR image and provides a smoothed representation of the brain surface to which the deformable model can rapidly converge. Our deformable models

Deep-learning based image reconstruction enables reduced dose CT pulmonary angiography with non-inferior image quality.

To investigate whether a CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) protocol with reduced radiation dose and deep-learning based image reconstruction (DLIR) is non-inferior in image quality to standard-dose CTPA using iterative reconstruction. A phantom study was conducted to estimate the additional radiation dose reduction enabled by high-strength deep learning-based image reconstruction (DLIR-H) compared to adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASiR-V 90%). Medium and large phantoms were used to simulate different body sizes. Subsequently, we reduced radiation dose of our clinical CTPA protoco

Sagittal reformations of volumetric inspiratory and expiratory high-resolution CT of the lung.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to determine whether sagittal reformations of volumetric high-resolution computed tomography (CT) provide additional information in evaluating lung abnormalities compared to axial high-resolution CT images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two consecutive patients who underwent combined inspiratory and expiratory volumetric high-resolution CT from May to July 2003 were studied. Using end-inspiratory and end-expiratory sagittal reformatted images, respiratory motion artifacts were evaluated at upper, middle, and lower lung areas bilaterally.

Rapid 1 mm isotropic diffusion tensor imaging with denoising and improved parameter estimation for detecting focal hippocampal lesions in temporal lobe epilepsy.

While high resolution diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) at 1 mm isotropic can detect focal lesions of the hippocampus in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), faster acquisition times would facilitate potential clinical implementation. The purpose here is to assess different published denoising algorithms to overcome the low signal-to-noise ratio and accelerate 1 mm isotropic DTI of the human hippocampus at 3 T while maintaining diffusivity metric accuracy and image quality for focal lesion detection in TLE. The previously published 5.5 min protocol of 110 diffusion images per slice (10 directions × 10 a

Magnetic Resonance Features of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome Involving Central Nervous System Diseases by Intelligent Fuzzy C-Means Clustering (FCM) Algorithm.

This study was aimed to explore the application of fuzzy C-means (FCM) algorithm in MR images of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients. Sixty AIDS patients with central nervous disease were selected as the research object. A method of brain MR image segmentation based on FCM clustering optimization was proposed, and FCM was optimized based on the neighborhood pixel correlation of gray difference. The correlation was introduced into the objective function to obtain more accurate pixel membership and segmentation features of the image. The segmented image can retain the original im

[Paget´s disease of the mandible: a differential diagnosis of the osteomyelitis of the jaw].

Paget´s disease of bone is a common, progressive disorder with uncertain etiology. It results in the replacement of normal skeletal areas with highly vascularized, low density bone. The most frequent symptom is bone pain, which is a result of periostal irritation due to increased metabolic activity. However, the disease may run without any symptoms. In these cases, an abnormal radiograph or an elevated serum alkaline phosphatase can indicate the disorder. Most cases are discovered accidentally. The average age of patients at the time of diagnosis is about 50 years. Male individuals are prefere

Segmentation of lung parenchyma in CT images using CNN trained with the clustering algorithm generated dataset.

BACKGROUND: Lung segmentation constitutes a critical procedure for any clinical-decision supporting system aimed to improve the early diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases. Abnormal lungs mainly include lung parenchyma with commonalities on CT images across subjects, diseases and CT scanners, and lung lesions presenting various appearances. Segmentation of lung parenchyma can help locate and analyze the neighboring lesions, but is not well studied in the framework of machine learning. METHODS: We proposed to segment lung parenchyma using a convolutional neural network (CNN) model. To reduc

Chest modeling and personalized surgical planning for pectus excavatum.

Pectus excavatum is among the most common major congenital anomalies of the chest wall whose correction can be performed via minimally invasive Nuss technique that places a pectus bar to elevate the sternum anteriorly. However, the size and bending of the pectus bar are manually modeled intraoperatively by trial-and-error. The procedure requires intense pain management in the months following surgery. In response, we are developing a novel distraction device for incremental and personalized PE correction with minimal risk and pain, akin to orthodontic treatment using dental braces. To design t

Computer-assisted 3D reconstruction of the terminal branches of the cerebral arteries. III. Posterior cerebral artery and circle of Willis.

We present a three-dimensional anatomical computer model of the terminal branches of the posterior cerebral artery and circle of Willis, acquired from equidistant serial anatomical slices of three brains. The reconstructions provide a clear picture from all angles of the complicated course of the terminal branches of the cerebral arteries. This can help to identify the arteries in conventional and magnetic resonance angiography. Our rendition of the cerebral arteries can be matched with CT, MR und PET images to indicate the areas of extension of the individual branches, allowing neuromorpholog

Image-based color ink diffusion rendering.

This paper proposes an image-based painterly rendering algorithm for automatically synthesizing an image with color ink diffusion. We suggest a mathematical model with a physical base to simulate the phenomenon of color colloidal ink diffusing into absorbent paper. Our algorithm contains three main parts: a feature extraction phase, a Kubelka-Munk (KM) color mixing phase, and a color ink diffusion synthesis phase. In the feature extraction phase, the information of the reference image is simplified by luminance division and color segmentation. In the color mixing phase, the KM theory is employ

COVID-19 pneumonia on chest X-rays: Performance of a deep learning-based computer-aided detection system.

Chest X-rays (CXRs) can help triage for Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients in resource-constrained environments, and a computer-aided detection system (CAD) that can identify pneumonia on CXR may help the triage of patients in those environment where expert radiologists are not available. However, the performance of existing CAD for identifying COVID-19 and associated pneumonia on CXRs has been scarcely investigated. In this study, CXRs of patients with and without COVID-19 confirmed by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were retrospectively collected from four and o

Evaluating severity of white matter lesions from computed tomography images with convolutional neural network.

PURPOSE: Severity of white matter lesion (WML) is typically evaluated on magnetic resonance images (MRI), yet the more accessible, faster, and less expensive method is computed tomography (CT). Our objective was to study whether WML can be automatically segmented from CT images using a convolutional neural network (CNN). The second aim was to compare CT segmentation with MRI segmentation. METHODS: The brain images from the Helsinki University Hospital clinical image archive were systematically screened to make CT-MRI image pairs. Selection criteria for the study were that both CT and MRI imag

Generation of mineral density distribution maps from subject-specific models of mandibles - a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Determination of the mineral content of bone and its distribution by computed tomography (CT) enables one to define the insertion points for prosthetic devices, or determine the degree of healing in cases of fracture or surgical intervention. The use of subject-specific models allows mapping of the spatial structure and the mineral content of the bone graphically and quantitatively. METHODS: Subject-specific models and mineral density maps from pig jaws were developed using segmentation, transcription tools and finite element analysis software. This study considered six frozen hea

Respiratory Motion Management in Abdominal MRI: Revisiting the Gap Between Technical Advances and Clinical Translation.

The inherently slow acquisition speed of MRI makes abdominal imaging highly sensitive to respiratory motion artifacts. Since the early days of MRI, the development of respiratory motion compensation techniques has been an active research topic, and this field has seen substantial progress. Despite these advances, the majority of these techniques are not used in daily clinical practice, and motion management methods used in clinical abdominal MRI today have changed little over the past decades. This observation points to a significant gap between technical innovation and clinical translation in

3D Cranial Nerve Imaging, a Novel MR Neurography Technique Using Black-Blood STIR TSE with a Pseudo Steady-State Sweep and Motion-Sensitized Driven Equilibrium Pulse for the Visualization of the Extraforaminal Cranial Nerve Branches.

This study investigated the feasibility of a 3D black-blood STIR TSE sequence with a pseudo steady-state sweep and motion-sensitized driven equilibrium pulse for extraforaminal cranial nerve imaging on a 3T system. Assessments of healthy volunteers showed near-perfect agreement in nerve visualization with excellent to good visualization of the extraforaminal trigeminal, greater occipital, and facial nerves. Suppression of surrounding tissues was excellent to good. 3D cranial nerve imaging can produce nerve selective imaging of extraforaminal cranial and spinal nerve branches.
