Depression: A cognitive perspective.

Cognitive science has been instrumental in advancing our understanding of the onset, maintenance, and treatment of depression. Research conducted over the last 50 years supports the proposition that depression and risk for depression are characterized by the operation of negative biases, and often by a lack of positive biases, in self-referential processing, interpretation, attention, and memory, as well as the use of maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies. There is also evidence to suggest that deficits in cognitive control over mood-congruent material underlie these cognitive pr

Living libraries: Nurse integration in interprofessional homeless health care team.

BACKGROUND: Despite an increase in national health care service utilization, entry into the health care system remains inequitable. This disparity in health care access disproportionately affects those experiencing homelessness. Because the homeless population faces significant financial and nonfinancial barriers, health care system engagement with these individuals must be reconsidered. OBJECTIVE: This article will describe the piloting of an interprofessional model within an urban library to address barriers to health care access that homeless individuals face. DESIGN: The library's unique

Canine rabies elimination: governance principles.

Rabies is still one of the deadliest diseases known to exist in the 21st century, and yet it remains irresponsibly neglected and underestimated. In light of this, this paper discusses the principles of governance as they relate to rabies control, using examples of global intersectoral coordination programmes for the control of canine rabies and for the elimination of human rabies transmitted by dogs. The first of these programmes was the Meeting of Rabies Program Directors of the Americas (REDIPRA), which has served as a model of intersectoral success for rabies elimination in other regions. E

F-words as core components in global early childhood development interventions: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Early childhood development (ECD) interventions within global health systems support children aged 0-5 years across a range of developmental needs, including those who are typically developing (healthy), at risk of developmental delay or living with developmental disorders. These interventions address multiple domains of development, yet their conceptual integration remains variable across contexts. The F-words framework-encompassing Functionig, Family, Fitness, Fun, Friends and Future-provides a holistic, strengths-based lens for understanding child development, yet its integrat

Digital psychiatric biomarkers beyond the walls: A Science and Technology Studies view.

BACKGROUND: As traditional biomarkers have failed to deliver on promises of personalized diagnosis and treatment in psychiatry, digital biomarkers offer continuous and ecologically valid monitoring. By capturing symptoms directly within patients' everyday environments, they support a systemic approach to psychiatry. However, this ecological dimension challenges conventional validation criteria and requires in situ validation beyond research laboratories. OBJECTIVES: This study has two aims: first, to identify and compare standardization documents that could support validation standards for di

Effects of ambient air pollution on obesity and ectopic fat deposition: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, the prevalence of obesity tripled from 1975 to 2016. There is evidence that air pollution may contribute to the obesity epidemic through an increase in oxidative stress and inflammation of adipose tissue. However, the impact of air pollution on body weight at a population level remains inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis will estimate the association of ambient air pollution with obesity, distribution of ectopic adipose tissue, and the incidence and prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease among adults. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study will fol

A Microfabrication Method of PCL Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering by Simultaneous Two PDMS Molds Replication.

Not very far away, "tissue engineering" will become one of the most important branches of medical science for curing many types of diseases. This branch needs the cooperation of a wide range of sciences like medicine, chemistry, cellular biology, and genetic and mechanical engineering. Different parameters affect the final produced tissue, but the most important one is the quality and biocompatibility of the scaffold with the desired tissue which can provide the functionality of "native ECM" as well. The quality of the scaffold is directly dependent on its materials, design, and method of fabr

Creating 21st-Century Laboratories and Classrooms for Improving Population Health: A Call to Action for Academic Medical Centers.

Academic medical centers (AMCs) in the United States built world-class infrastructure to successfully combat disease in the 20th century, which is inadequate for the complexity of sustaining and improving population health. AMCs must now build first-rate 21st-century infrastructure to connect combating disease and promoting health. This infrastructure must acknowledge the bio-psycho-social-environmental factors impacting health and will need to reach far beyond the AMC walls to foster community "laboratories" that support the "science of health," complementary to those supporting the "science
