The phenylalanine-free diet is needed for the treatment of phenylketonuria. Phenylketonuria is an inherited metabolic condition in which there is a deficiency of the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase. Lack of this enzyme means the body cannot metabolise the essential amino acid phenylalanine, which then builds up in the blood and causes mental retardation and other abnormalities. Retardation can be prevented if phenylketonuria is diagnosed in the first three weeks of infancy and dietary treatment started straightaway. There is a universal screening test in the UK (the Guthrie test). Heel-prick

In early infancy, complex disorders of acid base metabolism are more frequent than in any other age group, with a predisposition to metabolic acidosis due to an age-related low renal capacity for acid excretion and an unphysiologically high actual renal acid load in nutrition with common formulas. Recently in preterm and small-for-gestational-age infants, persistent maximum renal net acid excretion (NAE) with subnormal or normal blood acid base status, impaired weight gain, and adaptive hormonal reactions have been observed. Incipient late metabolic acidosis is one example of a mixed disorder

Macrosomic infants and their mothers are at increased risk for intrapartum injury and perinatal morbidity and mortality. This study investigates the effectiveness of individual ultrasound fetal measurements, ponderal indices and estimated fetal weight in the identification of macrosomia in 732 pregnant patients who underwent ultrasound examination within 7 days of delivery. All the indices evaluated were compared for accuracy in predicting birth weight. Statistical comparison revealed that estimated fetal weight predicted macrosomia better than single ultrasound parameters and ponderal indices

BACKGROUND: In 2003, several hundred Israeli infants risked thiamine deficiency after being fed a soy-based formula deficient in thiamine. Approximately 20 patients were seriously affected, and three of them died. We report the clinical presentation of acute encephalopathy in 11 children and the long-term sequelae of eight children who initially survived.
PATIENTS: In the acute phase, six had bulbar signs, five had ophthalmologic signs and two had phrenic neuropathy. Three of the five patients with cardiac involvement had cardiomyopathy and died in the acute phase. One patient presented with

A computerized program in BASIC, which integrates the infant's fluid and nutritional requirements per gestational age and weight with the infant's postpartum age, was developed using the Apple II Plus microcomputer, dual floppy disks, and an Epson printer. Daily requirements of fluids, proteins, fat, CHO, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements are computed. For reference, the program displays the composition and indications for intravenous and hyperalimentation solutions, mature human milk, and 14 commercial formulas. Safety limits to prevent overload or deficient formulations are strategicall

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the addition of a multinutrient human milk fortifier to mother's milk while breastfeeding very preterm infants after hospital discharge is possible and whether it influences first-year growth.
METHODS: Of a cohort of 320 infants (gestational age: 24-32 weeks; birth weight: 535-2255 g), breastfed infants (65% [n = 207]) were randomly assigned shortly before hospital discharge to receive either unfortified (n = 102, group A) or fortified (n = 105, group B) mother's milk until 4 months' corrected age (CA). The remaining infants were bottle-fed with a preterm formula (g

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Bone mineral deficiency continues to occur in extremely-low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants despite formulas enriched in calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P). This study tested whether extra enteral Ca supplementation increases bone mineral content (BMC) and prevents dolichocephalic head flattening and myopia in ELBW infants.
STUDY DESIGN: Infants 401 to 1000 birth weight receiving enteral feeds were randomized to receive feeds supplemented with Ca-gluconate powder or pure standard feeds. The main outcome measures were the excretion of Ca and P by weekly spot urine measuremen

OBJECTIVE: Breastfeeding is globally recognized as the cornerstone of infant nutrition, offering unparalleled benefits for maternal and child health. However, exclusive breastfeeding rates remain below international targets, influenced by sociocultural, economic, and individual factors. This study aims to investigate breastfeeding practices in Türkiye, identify influencing factors, and compare these findings with global trends to highlight both commonalities and country-specific dynamics.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Ankara Bilkent City Hospital between June and August

UNLABELLED: Postnatal growth failure of very-low-birthweight (VLBW) infants may result from a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors, including inadequate nutrition, morbidities affecting nutrient requirements, endocrine abnormalities and treatments. Among VLBW infants, those small for gestational age (SGA) at birth and those with postnatal growth restriction at the time of discharge are at higher risk of later growth failure and long-term consequences. Nutritional intervention with an "aggressive nutrition" during the first weeks of life may be able to minimize the interrupt

AIMS OF THE STUDY: Unlicensed drugs are frequently used in paediatric care. To what extent they are prescribed in hospital care in Switzerland is unclear. Because prescribing errors seem to occur more frequently with unlicensed drugs, we aimed to assess the prevalence of unlicensed drug prescriptions in two study periods (2018 and 2019) at the University Children's Hospital Zurich, compare these periods and investigate whether unlicensed drugs were more prone to prescribing errors than licensed drugs.
METHODS: We conducted a sub-analysis of a retrospective single-centre observational study an

The perinatal period is critical for human development. The brain of very low birth weight (VLBW, <1,500 g) infants is particularly vulnerable to undernutrition. Enteral nutrition is of major importance for the growth and the development of the gastrointestinal tract, which depends on the amount and composition of feeds. Feeding intolerance and the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) are key concerns with enteral nutrition in VLBW infants. Controversies exist on how to feed VLBW infants during the first weeks of life, particularly in extremely low birth weight (ELBW, <1,000 g) infants. Unr

Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is a crucial component of neonatal care, playing a vital role in early physiological stabilization, neurodevelopment, and the formation of maternal-infant bonding. A growing body of evidence indicates that deprivation of SSC, particularly during the immediate postnatal period, is associated with long-term adverse outcomes, including emotional dysregulation, behavioral difficulties, and impaired cognitive development. Importantly, the absence of early SSC has also been shown to negatively affect the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding, thereby limiting its we

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding can be challenging in neonates born between 34 0/7 and 36 6/7 weeks gestation (late preterm).
METHODS: This prospective cohort study aims to evaluate exclusive breastfeeding at discharge, at three and six months of life in late preterm infants, and to identify facilitators and challenges to it. We included late preterm neonates eligible for the rooming-in. Data about breastfeeding at discharge, at three and six months of life were collected.
RESULTS: Two hundred and fourteen late preterm infants were included in the study. At discharge 70 infants (32.7%) were fed wi

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the hypothesis that feeding volumes exceeding 100 mL/kg/d and exposure to cow's milk formula preoperatively increase the risk for preoperative necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in infants with complex congenital heart disease.
STUDY DESIGN: All infants, of any gestational age, with an isolated cardiac lesion at high risk for NEC (ductal-dependent lesions, transposition of the great arteries, truncus arteriosus, and aorto-pulmonary window) admitted to Texas Children's Hospital from 2010 to 2016 were included. NEC was defined based on the modified Bell criteria. Feeding reg

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological evidence suggests that timing of introduction of solid foods may be associated with subsequent obesity, and the association may vary by whether an infant is breastfed or formula-fed.
METHODS: We included 1181 infants who participated in the Infant Feeding Practices Study II (IFPS II) and the Year 6 Follow Up (Y6FU) study. Data from IFPS II were used to calculate the primary exposure and timing of solid food introduction (<4, 4-<6, and ≥6 months), and data from Y6FU were used to calculate the primary outcome and obesity at 6 years of age (BMI ≥95th percentile).
