OBJECTIVES: Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON), a relatively rare condition, can cause visual functional impairment and permanent functional damage. Surgeons should be familiar with its diagnostic criteria and treatment to effectively manage cases of facial trauma with TON. We investigated the feasibility of navigation-assisted endoscopic trans-nasal optic nerve decompression (ETOND) to treat TON in maxillofacial trauma patients. Patients and.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from the clinical investigation of four consecutive patients, two males and two females with an average age of

OBJECTIVES: This study proposes a predictive model that integrates radiological features with multidimensional clinical factors for the accurate prediction of postoperative infection in maxillofacial fracture patients treated with absorbable fixation plates.
METHODS: This model incorporates a fusion algorithm based on K-means clustering and fully connected neural networks to perform in-depth analysis of non-contrast and reconstructed maxillofacial CT images. It also includes frequently overlooked clinical variables, such as surgery-related factors and individual patient characteristics, there

The influence of previous trauma in the management of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is controversial. The objectives of this study were to compare treatment regimens and outcomes in motor vehicle accident trauma-related versus nontrauma-related TMD patients. Files of 50 trauma and 50 matched nontrauma TMD patients were reviewed. Information concerning treatment received, progress of symptoms with treatment, and findings from the final examination were recorded. As a whole group, posttraumatic TMD patients tended to receive more types of treatment (P < .0001), have more medica

A total of 20 patients with varying degrees of facial asymmetry were followed clinically and radiographically for at least 18 months after undergoing surgical correction. In 12 of the patients, the cause of asymmetry was hemifacial microsomia of varying severity. Infection of the TMJ in early childhood and irradiation damage were other causes of facial growth disturbance. Bimaxillary osteotomy was carried out in all cases and was often combined with resection of the coronoid process in order to lengthen the ramus. A postoperative jaw exercise programme has proved important as a means of mainta

BACKGROUND: Commonly occurring extensive osseous defects in the oral and maxillofacial area are seen following complete or partial resection of the mandible and other facial bones in oncologic surgery or following traumatic injury. Autogenous osseous grafts have been used to restore these defects. Additionally, bone graft substitute materials and autogenous osseous grafts are applied to congenital defects such as cleft palate, facial clefts, and facial asymmetry. We have simulated these types of defects in appropriately aged Macaca fascicularis and Macaca mulatta monkeys to study the efficacy

In airgun injuries, the removal of the projectile is often recommended. The material properties of airgun projectiles make it difficult to determine their precise anatomical location using conventional radiological techniques. Conventional X-rays give only a two-dimensional representation of projectiles and do not allow a foreign object to be located precisely. Multi-slice computed tomography (CT) has become a standard tool in diagnosis. Metal objects can cause artefacts in CT scans and make it difficult to identify adjacent anatomical structures. By contrast, cone-beam CT (CBCT) provides thre

The correction of asymmetry in craniomaxillofacial region presents many problems for reconstructive surgeons. For this purpose, varieties of different materials and techniques have been used. We present our experience with diced bone graft wrapped in Surgicel applied to 5 patients with facial atrophy due to various causes between the years 2005 and 2008. The average follow-up period was 18 months (range, 9-25 months). All bone grafts were diced into small pieces with a maximum size of 2 to 3 mm using a costotome. The smaller bone grafts were prepared according to the technique described by Ero

Successful outcome in any surgery is dependent on unobstructed access. Management of patients with polytrauma of the face or those undergoing multiple/complex facial osteotomies has always been a challenge, not only to maxillofacial surgeons but also to the anesthetists, as both specialists fight for the same anatomic territory. Hernandez in 1986 published the first article on the submental route for endotracheal intubation. He developed this technique to avoid tracheotomy particularly in maxillofacial trauma where short-term maxillomandibular fixation was required.Since our first report in 19

56 patients have been treated with cerebral gangliosides by the Authors. They underwent a maxillo-facial operation due to various pathological reasons (traumas, tumors, malformations). They presented secondary symptoms such as neurological deficits of the V and VII paired cranial nerves. The recovery from neurological sensitive, motor deficit have been positive, and the Authors have been encouraged to the therapeutical use of gangliosides in the mentioned pathology and to a wider experiment of the test product.

For several decades bisphosphonates have been used to reduce skeletal related events in patients with both osteoporosis or bone metastases. Under long term application, besides the known therapy side effects, a new clinical picture has been described within the last few years. This is osteonecrosis of the jaws, which is characterized by its difficulty in treatment. Besides exposed jaw bone, the start of the disease usually lacks any symptoms. The typical clinical symptoms then are foetor ex ore, swelling, exsudation, loosening of teeth, pain or paresthesia. Later oro-antral/nasal or oro-cutane

Maxillofacial fractures require reconstruction of a functional craniofacial unit rather than isolated realignment of fractured bone. Stable occlusion, mandibular movement, temporomandibular joint position, facial contour, and fixation-device adaptation should be considered as interdependent treatment targets. Digital workflows incorporating CT or CBCT reconstruction, virtual surgical planning, CAD/CAM, 3-dimensional printing, patient-specific implants or plates, and navigation have improved visualization and surgical transfer. However, comminution, bilateral injury, loss of anatomic references

BACKGROUND: Nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates (BIS) are potent therapeutics in osteoporosis, but their use may result in osteonecrotic side-effects in the maxillofacial region. Periosteal microcirculatory reactions may contribute to the development of bone-healing complications, particularly in osteoporotic bones, where ischemia-reperfusion (IR) events often develop during orthopaedic/trauma interventions. The effect of BIS on the inflammatory reactions of appendicular long bones has not yet been evaluated; thus, we aimed to examine the influence of chronic zoledronate (ZOL) administration o

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of parathyroid - glandula parathyreoideae (PTG) diseases has been increasing worldwide. Unlike benign tumours, the incidence of malignant PTG tumours is rather a rare diagnosis. The morbidity of parathyroid surgery is associated with surgical removal of one or more pathologically altered parathyroid glands, particularly parathyroid adenoma associated with primary hyperparathyroidism (HPPT), but also hyperplasia associated with secondary or tertiary HPPT, and last but not least, HPPT due to parathyroid cancer.
METHODS: A retrospective statistical analysis was perfor
