The increasing use of electric scooters (e-scooters) has been accompanied by an increase in the number of traumas. Noncompliance with regulations and the effectiveness of legal measures remain subjects of ongoing debate. This study aimed to investigate the demographic characteristics of patients with e-scooter-related orthopedic injuries, temporal distribution of trauma, and patterns of these injuries. We retrospectively evaluated 534 patients with e-scooter-related injuries who were referred to the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology between January 2020 and October 2023. Variables suc

AIM: We report a case of neurogenic pulmonary edema in a patient who sustained a severe traumatic brain injury in a motorbike accident and review the current literature with regards to the management of neurogenic pulmonary edema (NPE).
METHODS: A 17 year old male was involved in a motorbike collision into a tree. Copious amounts of pink frothy sputum was noted on scene. Rapid sequence intubation was performed on scene and video laryngoscopy demonstrated profuse frothy secretions welling up from the larynx.
RESULTS: The patient underwent emergency external ventricular drain insertion for int

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK: the traumatic amputation or partial amputation of a portion of the lower limb is one of the most serious and not so rare road accident and job injury. There are few cases reported of replantation of the lower extremities rather than amputation surgery. This work describes a case of partial amputation of the right ankle.
METHODS: the emergency treatment consisted of rigorous lavage and debridement, reduction, stabilization of the ankle and restoreation of the neurovascular and soft tissues lesions. Because of cutaneous necrosis another surgical treatment of reve

Despite the significant increase in mortality among older motorcyclists during the past decade, few studies have addressed specific injuries or mortality rates among all those injured. The purpose of this study is to describe the crash and injury characteristics among a cohort of motorcyclists injured in Maryland, and to determine the influence of age and crash type on mortality, injury patterns, and place of death (scene vs. hospital). Possible biases introduced by studying only those hospitalized are described. Based on the findings, specific injury prevention strategies for older vs. younge

Microsurgical replantation of simultaneous bilateral upper extremity amputations is a complex procedure requiring a highly coordinated multidisciplinary team. Functional outcomes depend on anatomical level of injury, duration of ischemia, extent of crushing, degree of contamination, and quality of postoperative rehabilitation. We report a 45-year-old male industrial worker who sustained complete simultaneous amputations through the distal third of the right forearm and at the left wrist following an industrial paper-cutting machine accident. Total ischemia time was 8 h. Two microsurgical teams

Men who move for work (e.g., taxi drivers, fishermen, labourers) are often described as a homogeneous group at equal risk of HIV acquisition. This framing often masks important differences between men. Using data from rapid ethnographic assessments and a baseline survey in two settings in South Africa and one in Uganda, we examine how sexual risk- taking among men who travel frequently for work is shaped by mobility. We describe the different mobility patterns of men who are engaged in fishing, driving taxis and trucks and motorcycle-taxi riders, showing how these patterns interacted with repu

Here we report high-performance all-polymer transparent heaters based on the air-stable n-doped polymer poly(benzodifurandione) (n-PBDF). Using a scalable ethanol-based ink and a single-step, post-treatment-free spray-coating process, the resulting films combine low sheet resistance (Rs ≈ 60 Ω sq.-1), high visible light transmittance (VLT > 80%), and low optical haze (<0.30%). The heaters reach steady-state temperatures above 180 °C at low DC voltages (<24 V) with rapid heating rates (>2.5 °C s-1). Measurements of the in-plane and cross-plane thermal conductivities reveal a pronounced thermal

INTRODUCTION: Zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures can lead to significant facial asymmetry due to displacement of the zygomatic bone. Its management is challenging because of the complex 3D structure and difficult surgical access to the ZMC. This case report evaluates the combination of elevator and modified wire and screw technique to treat ZMC fractures displacement with facial asymmetry.
CASE REPORTS: A 31-year-old male patient was referred to the emergency room with complaints of pain, swelling on the right face, and facial asymmetry after a motorcycle accident. Anamnesis revealed

BACKGROUND: A "floating fibula" is a rare and severe injury pattern characterized by complete disruption of both proximal and distal tibiofibular attachments. Its association with a multiligamentous knee injury (MLKI) has not been previously documented.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We report the case of a 27-year-old male who sustained high-energy trauma in a motorcycle accident, resulting in a complex MLKI with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), and posterolateral corner (PLC) injuries, associated with complete disruption of the pro

PURPOSE: Palmar dislocation of the trapezoid is an exceptionally rare injury, typically resulting from high-energy wrist trauma, and is frequently associated with complex carpal or carpometacarpal fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report 2 cases of palmar trapezoid dislocation following motorcycle accidents. In both patients, the injury was associated with multiple fractures and carpometacarpal dislocations. Open reduction via a dorsal approach with temporary Kirschner-wire fixation and ligamentous repair was performed.
RESULTS: At final follow-up, anatomical reduction was maintained in b

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between individual, cumulative leisure noise exposure (CLNE), acceptable yearly exposure (AYE) and tinnitus among a nationally representative sample of Canadians.
DESIGN: In-person household questionnaires were used to evaluate leisure noise exposure across age, sex, household income and tinnitus: ever experienced, previous year, frequent, bothersome. High (≥85 dBA, LEX), low (<85 dBA, LEX) CLNE and AYEs were defined according to occupational limits.
STUDY SAMPLE: A randomised sample of 10,460 respondents, aged 6-79, completed questionnaires between 2012

BACKGROUND: Helmet use significantly decreases the risk and severity of head injuries and fatalities resulting from road traffic crashes among motorcyclists. This study assesses the prevalence and factors influencing effective helmet use among motorcyclists in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 560 motorcyclists, employing a simple random sampling technique. Data regarding knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to helmet usage were collected through a pre-tested, structured questionnaire administered by an interviewer.
