To date several neurodegenerative disorders including myotonic dystrophy, Huntington's disease, Kennedy's disease, fragile X syndrome, spinocerebellar ataxias or Friedreich's ataxia have been linked to the expanding trinucleotide sequences. Although phenotypic features vary among these debilitating diseases, the structural abnormalities of the triplet repeat containing DNA sequences is the primary cause for all of these disorders. Expansions of the CAG repeat within coding regions of miscellaneous genes result in the synthesis of aberrant proteins containing enormously long polyglutamine stret…

In the past few years, a new type of genetic mutation, expansion of trinucleotide repeats, has been shown to cause neurologic disease. This … fragile X syndromes (FRAXA and FRAXE), (2) long cytosine-thymine-guanine (CTG) repeat expansions in myotonic dystrophy, (3) long guanine-adenine-adenine repeat expansions in Friedreich's ataxia and (4) short cytosine-adenine-guanine repeat expansions (CAG) which are implicated in eight neurodegenerative disorders and are the focus of this review. Diseases that are c …

Radioligand assays have been developed for the principal reproductive steroids and peptide hormones. Specific binding reagents have included antibodies, plasma binders, and intracellular receptors. In each assay, problems of specificity, sensitivity, and nonspecific inhibitors were encountered. Many features of the endocrine physiology in childhood, during puberty, and in adulthood have been characterized. Hormonal evaluations of endocrine disorders of reproduction are characterized on the basis of their characteristic pathophysiologic alterations.

Steinert disease, the most common myopathy in adults, is a challenge for anaesthesiologists and critical care physicians during the perioperative time. The risk of myotonic crisis, malign hyperthermia and the increased sensitivity to anaesthetic drugs shouldn't be forgotten. On contrary, Steinert disease is rarely revealed in the postoperative period. It should be evoked in case of postoperative pulmonary complications such as difficult weaning with neurological symptoms like hypotonia or muscular weakness.

We determined the respiration, respiratory control, and Pi:O ratios with different substrates in mitochondria isolated from five cases of human neuromuscular disorders (two cases of central core disease, two cases of neuropathy of Dejerine-Sottas, and one case of Kugelberg-Welander's disease) and compared them with normal human muscle. In all the myopathies studied, a severe derangement of the respiratory control with variable derangement of oxidative phosphorylation was found. This supports the idea that a group of neuromyopathies shares the same biochemical lesion as the so-called mitochondr

OBJECTIVE: Fetal sinus bradycardia (FSB) is usually a benign antenatal finding but it can be a marker of an underlying serious condition that manifests in later life. The aim of this study was to report the antenatal course and postnatal outcome of FSB.
METHOD: This study was a retrospective review of all cases of persistent FSB, defined as a fetal heart rate (FHR) < 3rd percentile for gestational age (GA) with 1:1 atrioventricular conduction on at least two consecutive fetal echocardiograms, diagnosed between January 2014 and December 2024 at the Brompton Centre for Fetal Cardiology, London,
