Resuscitation of Drowned Persons During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Consensus Statement.

IMPORTANCE: Resuscitation is a niche example of how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected society in the long term. Those trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) face the dilemma that attempting to save a life may result in their own harm. This is most of all a problem for drowning, where hypoxia is the cause of cardiac arrest and ventilation is the essential first step in reversing the situation. OBJECTIVE: To develop recommendations for water rescue organizations in providing their rescuers with safe drowning resuscitation procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic. EVIDENCE REVIEW: Two c

Leveraging Social Media Activity and Machine Learning for HIV and Substance Abuse Risk Assessment: Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Social media networks provide an abundance of diverse information that can be leveraged for data-driven applications across various social and physical sciences. One opportunity to utilize such data exists in the public health domain, where data collection is often constrained by organizational funding and limited user adoption. Furthermore, the efficacy of health interventions is often based on self-reported data, which are not always reliable. Health-promotion strategies for communities facing multiple vulnerabilities, such as men who have sex with men, can benefit from an automa

Health professionals and patients' perspectives on person-centred maternal and child healthcare in Burkina Faso.

CONTEXT: The person-centred approach (PCA) is a promising avenue for care improvement. However, health professionals in Burkina Faso (hereafter referred to as caregivers) seem unprepared for taking into consideration patients' preferences and values in the context of healthcare provision. OBJECTIVE: To understand the meaning attributed to PCA in the Burkina Faso context of care and to identify the challenges related to its adoption from the perspective of caregivers and women service users (hereafter referred to as patients). METHODS: An ethnographic qualitative research design was used in t

Factors Associated With Burnout and Stress in Trainee Physicians: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Evidence suggests that physicians experience high levels of burnout and stress and that trainee physicians are a particularly high-risk group. Multiple workplace- and non-workplace-related factors have been identified in trainee physicians, but it is unclear which factors are most important in association with burnout and stress. Better understanding of the most critical factors could help inform the development of targeted interventions to reduce burnout and stress. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association between different stressors and burnout/stress among physicians engaged in s

Use of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Athletic Training: Common Measures, Selection Considerations, and Practical Barriers.

CONTEXT: Current evidence suggests that a low percentage of athletic trainers (ATs) routinely use patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). An understanding of the perceptions of ATs who use (AT-USE) and who do not use (AT-NON) PROMs as well as any differences due to demographic characteristics (eg, use for patient care or research, job setting, highest education level) may help facilitate the use of PROMs in athletic training. OBJECTIVE: To describe commonly used PROMs by AT-USE, the criteria by which AT-USE select PROMs, and reasons for non-use by AT-NON. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. S

Early vs Late Initiation of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: Protocol for a Prospective, Randomized, Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by severe inflammatory lung injury leading to life-threatening hypoxemia. Standard treatment includes lung-protective mechanical ventilation and adjunctive measures, while veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (vvECMO) is used as a rescue therapy in refractory cases. However, the optimal timing for initiation of vvECMO remains uncertain, with official recommendations identifying it as a rescue therapy, while emerging evidence suggests that earlier implementation of vvECMO during the disease course might provide b
