The effects of thoracic sympathotomy on heart rate variability in patients with palmar hyperhidrosis.

PURPOSE: To observe the evolution of heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with palmar hyperhidrosis before and after endoscopic thoracic sympathotomy and to evaluate the effects of the surgery on the autonomic nervous system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Endoscopic thoracic sympathotomy was performed on 20 patients with palmar hyperhidrosis. The thoracic sympathetic chain at the level of the third to fourth rib (R3-R4) was transected, but the ganglia were left in position without removal. A slightly larger ramus, in comparison to the other rami, that arose laterally from the sympathetic chain w

Pheochromocytoma: the expanding genetic differential diagnosis.

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas are tumors of the autonomic nervous system; pheochromocytomas are tumors of the adrenal medulla, and paragangliomas are extra-adrenal tumors arising from either the sympathetic nervous system or parasympathetic ganglia. It has previously been estimated that approximately 10%-15% of pheochromocytomas are due to hereditary causes. However, our increased understanding of the three hereditary syndromes (neurofibromatosis 1, multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, and von Hippel-Lindau syndrome) in which pheochromocytoma is found and the recent discovery that mutat

The Body, the Brain, the Environment, and Parkinson's Disease.

The brain- and body-first models of Lewy body disorders predict that aggregated alpha-synuclein pathology usually begins in either the olfactory system or the enteric nervous system. In both scenarios the pathology seems to arise in structures that are closely connected to the outside world. Environmental toxicants, including certain pesticides, industrial chemicals, and air pollution are therefore plausible trigger mechanisms for Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. Here, we propose that toxicants inhaled through the nose can lead to pathological changes in alpha-synuclein in th

Disseminated Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Neoplasm (NEN) with an Uncommon Localisation in the Central Nervous System. A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) are rare neoplasms that originate from neuroendocrine cells and are characterized by the potential of hormonal activity. Approximately 70% of these tumours are located in the gastrointestinal system (GI), followed by the bronchi, endocrine glands-like C cells of the thyroid (medullary carcinoma), the parasympathetic and sympathetic system (paragangliomas, pheochromocytoma) and other very rare locations. The prevalence of cerebral metastases in neuroendocrine tumours is estimated by various authors to be approximately 1.5-5%. When the primary tumour is

Parasympathetic overdrive as a cause of overactive bladder in a high-fat-diet-induced obesity mouse model.

Overactive bladder (OAB) is a highly prevalent condition characterized by urinary urgency that negatively affects quality of life. Because obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are known as major risk factors for OAB, we explored the mechanisms underlying obesity-/MetS-associated OAB using a high-fat-diet (HFD)-induced obesity mouse model. Four-week-old male C57BL6 mice were subjected to either a HFD (60 kcal% fat) or a normal diet (ND, 10 kcal% fat). Cystometry and bladder afferent activity recordings in anaesthetized mice, isometric tension recordings in detrusor smooth muscle (DSM) strips a

Maladaptive neurovisceral interactions in patients with Internet gaming disorder: A study of heart rate variability and functional neural connectivity using the graph theory approach.

Heart rate variability (HRV) can be used to represent the regulatory adaptive system and is a proxy for neurovisceral integration. Consistent with the view that, like other addictions, Internet gaming disorder (IGD) involves disrupted regulatory function, the present study hypothesized that IGD patients would show (a) decreased HRV, (b) ineffective functional neural connectivity, and (c) differential patterns of association between HRV and functional neural connectivity relative to healthy controls (HCs). The present study included 111 young adults (53 IGD patients and 58 age- and sex-matched

Mother-Child Coregulation of Parasympathetic Processes Differs by Child Maltreatment Severity and Subtype.

Parasympathetic processes appear to underlie maladaptive parent-child interactions in maltreating families, but it is unknown whether parent-child coregulation of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) differs by child maltreatment severity and subtype. RSA coregulation in maltreating and nonmaltreating mother-child dyads ( N = 146; age 3-5 years) during two dyadic tasks was analyzed using dynamic time series modeling. Nonmaltreating dyads showed positive RSA concordance but maltreating dyads (when examined as one group) did not. However, when examined separately by subtype, physically abusive dya

Modulation of cholinergic systems by manganese.

Information on changes in the central nervous system (CNS) cholinergic systems following exposure to manganese are considerably less extensive than that associated with other neurotransmitter systems. However, experimental and clinical evidence support the notion that cholinergic activity plays a key role in the pathophysiology of manganese-induced neurotoxicity. Manganese acts as a chemical stressor in cholinergic neurons in a region-specific manner causing breakdown of the cellular homeostatic mechanisms. In fact, a number of cholinergic synaptic mechanisms are putative targets for manganese

Prophylaxis against Frey's syndrome in parotid surgery.

In 1990 the authors reported their preliminary study of the prevention of Frey's syndrome in 55 patients utilizing a superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) flap in parotid gland surgery. During the past 10 years, numerous studies have supported their original thesis that interposition of living tissue between the resected gland bed and the skin could prevent the development of this complication. The authors have expanded their own patient population and now consider this a definitive study on the prevention of Frey's syndrome. A total of 160 patients are presented with a follow-up period

Autonomic brainstem projections to the pancreas: a retrograde transneuronal viral tracing study in the rat.

The present study describes brainstem nuclei that participate in the autonomic innervation of the pancreas, using a retrograde viral transneuronal tracing technique. It aimed at identifying the neuronal architecture of the parasympathetic, gustatory-induced insulin release by the endocrine pancreas (preabsorptive insulin response, PIR). Autonomic pathways organized for reflex adjustments of the end organ, as it happens in the PIR, involve relatively simple circuits. This implies a short brainstem circuit from the rostral gustatory nucleus of the solitary tract to the dorsal motor nucleus of th

Nerve growth factor and nootropic drug Cerebrolysin but not fibroblast growth factor can reduce spatial memory impairment elicited by fimbria-fornix transection: short-term study.

In an attempt to compare effects of different neurotrophic factors on impaired memory function, young adult naive rats were trained to find the hidden platform in the Morris water maze (3 consecutive days, eight trials/day). The fimbria-fornix was unilaterally removed by aspiration and nerve growth factor (NGF) (11 micrograms/ml and 0.5 microgram/ml; groups NGF and ngf, respectively) or basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) (0.2 microgram/ml, group FGF) were applied via intra-cerebroventricular infusion by the osmotic minipump (flow rate 0.5 microliter/h, 14 days). Nootropic drug Cerebrolysin

Parasympathetic-mediated reflex salivation and vasodilatation in the cat submandibular gland.

The aim of the present study was to compare and characterize the secretory and vasodilator effects induced by chorda lingual nerve (CLN) stimulation (i.e., direct parasympathetic stimulation) and reflex parasympathetic stimulation in the submandibular gland (SMG) of sympathectomized cats. The increase in blood flow and salivary secretion in response to electrical stimulation of the central cut ends of the vagus and inferior alveolar nerves, as well as to stimulation of the CLN at a site approximately 5 mm distal to the intersection of the CLN and the SMG duct (site D) was completely abolished

Nitric oxide-related vasodilator responses to parasympathetic stimulation of the submandibular gland in the cat.

1. The extent to which parasympathetic vasodilator responses, in the submandibular gland of the cat, depend upon release of nitric oxide related (NO chi) or endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) within the gland has been investigated in anesthetized cats given N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) which specifically blocks the synthesis of EDRF from arginine. 2. Close intra-arterial infusions of L-NAME (> or = 100 mg kg-1) produced a steady and significant rise in mean aortic pressure together with a steady increase in basal submandibular vascular resistance over the next 20-30 m

Effects of intracranial infusions of chlordiazepoxide on spatial learning in the Morris water maze. II. Neuropharmacological specificity.

In the preceding paper it was found that infusions of chlordiazepoxide (CDP) into the medial septal region, but not several other regions possessing a high density of benzodiazepine receptors, impaired spatial learning, but not cue learning or swim speed, in the Morris water maze. The present investigation sought to further characterize the neuropharmacological profile of this effect. Initially, it was reconfirmed that systemically administered CDP impaired spatial learning, but not cue learning or swim speed, in the water maze. Additionally, it was found that systemically administered scopola

Cholinergic stimulation of neuropeptide Y secretion from the isolated perfused rat stomach.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is present in both extrinsic sympathetic adrenergic nerve terminals and intrinsic nerves of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Based on this localization a number of functions have been attributed to GI NPY including regulation of blood flow, intestinal fluid and electrolyte transport, and motility. There is nothing currently known, however, about the regulation of its secretion from GI nerves. The effect of cholinergic agonists and antagonists on secretion of NPY immunoreactivity (NPY-IR) from the isolated perfused rat stomach was investigated in the present study. Perfusat

Short-term vasodilator effect of captopril in patients with severe mitral regurgitation is parasympathetically mediated.

BACKGROUND: Few data exist regarding the effects of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors in patients with regurgitant valvular lesions. We postulated an immediate improvement in cardiac performance with captopril in mitral regurgitation, which, in a hemodynamically compensated group of patients, might be mediated through parasympathetic vasodilation rather than through blockade of angiotension converting enzyme. METHODS AND RESULTS: Hemodynamics were examined before and 90 minutes after oral captopril (25-50 mg) in 18 patients (mean age, 31 years) with chronic, severe mitral regurgitation

Functional studies of nerve projections in the canine intestine.

An in vivo model has been developed to study nerve connections in the canine intestine, using spread of field stimulated contractions recorded proximally and distally with strain gauges and local intra-arterial injections of drugs. Excitation spread orally for several centimetres, more effectively at lower frequencies of field stimulation. This excitation was blocked by local hexamethonium or by a combination of atropine and naloxone (each of which reduced the contractions). Distal excitation occurred after a longer delay than oral excitation; during the delay there was frequently an initial r

Cholinergic and non-cholinergic components of the inotropism evoked by electric field stimulation in the isolated rat urinary bladder. Influence of some eicosanoids.

The present study explores whether some arachidonic acid (AA) metabolites formed via cyclo-oxygenase or lipoxygenase pathways influence the inotropism of isolated rat urinary bladders evoked by electric field stimulation (EFS), both in presence of or in absence of atropine. The EFS consisted in square wave pulses of 5 Hz, 5 msec duration and supramaximal voltage, applied every 3 min for a period of 10 sec. Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) at 10(-4) M, decreased around 30% the magnitude of inotropic responses to EFS and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2, partially at 10(-9) M and fully at 10(-8) M), restored co
