A histological study was made of the carotid bodies of man and various animal species from low and high altitudes. The animals studied were the alpaca, llama, cattle, guinea-pig, rabbit, dog, rat and man. As well as a qualitative microscopic study, a differential cell count was carried out to determine the percentage of the light and dark variants of chief cells and of sustentacular cells present. Modern views on embryology have increased our understanding of the nature of oblique facial clefts. The anomalies that have their origin at the junction of facial processes, such as the nasomaxillary dysplasias, may be named primary clefts or transformation. The frequency and the various etiologies of community acquired pneumonia are not well established. In adults, it is believed that half of the cases are caused by viruses and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. After a brief survey of the already well known functions of tromboxane and prostacyclin both in physiological and pathological conditions, the data found in the literature on the therapeutical use of prostacyclin are discussed. The positive results obtained in the treatment of arteriosclerosis obliterans of the lower limbs, of Raynaud's syndrome, of ischaemic stroke and of ischaemic heart diseases, together with the very modest side effects of prostacyclin, suggest to continue with prostacyclin therapy even if its mechanism of action is not yet clear.

Chronic suppurative otitis media (COM) is reported to cause elevation of bone-conduction thresholds either by damage to cochlear sensorineural structures or by alteration in the mechanics of sound transmission in the ear. The histologic findings in the temporal bones of three patients who died from viral encephalopathy are presented.
