Recent studies in adult male rats have shown that gonadal hormones influence performance on certain working memory and other types of cognitive tasks that are sensitive to lesions of the medial and/or orbital prefrontal cortices. This study asked whether gonadal hormone modulation of prefrontal cortical function in males also extends to the perirhinal division of the rat prefrontal cortex. Specifically, sham-operated control, gonadectomized, and gonadectomized rats supplemented with testosterone propionate or estradiol were tested on a spontaneous novel object recognition task, a paradigm wher

Human faces look more similar to each other when they are presented upside down, leading to an increase in error rate and response time during individual face discrimination tasks. This face inversion effect (FIE) is one of the most robust findings in the face processing literature. Recent neuroimaging studies using adaptation to face identity have shown that the "fusiform face area" was the primary neural source of the behavioral FIE. However, the time course of the FIE, that is, when inversion affects the coding of facial identity in the human brain, remains unclear. Here, we addressed this

Temporal visual working memory (VWM) biases in spider anxiety were studied with an Attentional Blink paradigm. In Experiment 1, participants viewed pictures sequentially presented at rates of 80 ms and were instructed to memorize two target pictures. We varied time between targets and valence of the second target (neutral: mushroom, positive: blossom, negative: spider). In Experiment 2, spider fearfuls and non-anxious controls (both without snake anxiety) participated. Here we tested two negative targets: disorder-related spiders and disorder-irrelevant snakes. Both positive and negative items

Autism has been associated with atypical face and configural processing, as indicated by the lack of a face inversion effect (better recognition of upright than inverted faces). We investigated whether such atypical processing was restricted to the face or extended to social information found in body postures. An inversion paradigm compared recognition of upright and inverted faces, body postures, and houses. Typical adults demonstrated inversion effects for both faces and body postures, but adults with autism demonstrated only a face inversion effect. Adults with autism may not have a configu

In this study we asked whether measures of phonological awareness and rapid naming were correlated with single-word reading skills of 30 adults with mild mental retardation. We presented four tests of phonological awareness (for rime, first, middle, and end-sound categorization), two rapid-naming tests (pictures and letters), and the Woodcock Word-Identification and Word-Attack subtests. All four phonological-awareness measures and both rapid-naming measures were significantly correlated with both word-attack and word-identification skills. This outcome is consistent with findings from typical

We examined attitudes towards spiders by employing an Approach-Avoidance Task, in which participants respond to pictures by pulling a joystick towards themselves or by pushing it away from themselves. For spider fearfuls, this stimulus-response assignment is either compatible (push spiders away) or incompatible (pull spiders closer). Specific compatibility effects were found: compared to non-anxious controls and control pictures, highly spider fearful participants responded to spider pictures more quickly by pushing than by pulling, even when picture contents was task-irrelevant. Moreover, com

When viewing a three-dimensional Necker cube with one eye, participants can experience illusory reversals even while they feel the cube with their hands. This surprising property of the visual-haptic Necker cube affords a unique opportunity to investigate temporal constraints on interactions between vision and touch during extended observation of a three-dimensional object. Our observers reported reversals while they viewed the cube and, at the same time, they either held it with two-finger grips, felt it with while their hands remained stationary, or actively explored it by moving one hand. Neuroimaging studies of overt speech hold an important practical advantage allowing monitoring of subject performance, particularly valuable in disorders like aphasia. However, speech production is not a monotonic process but a complex sequence of stages. Levelt and colleagues have described these as roughly corresponding to two originally independent systems--conceptual and sensorimotor--that are linked in the formulation and expression of spoken language. In the initial stages a word is chosen to match a concept (lexical selection); in the later stages the sound and motor patterns are encode

Blood-oxygenation-level-dependent signal was measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging in 24 healthy young subjects (12 men and 12 women) during viewing of angry, fearful, and neutral male and female face pictures. Exposure to angry male as opposed to angry female faces activated the visual cortex and the anterior cingulate gyrus significantly more in men than in women. A similar sex-differential brain activation pattern was present during exposure to fearful but not neutral faces. Previous behavioral studies indicate enhanced physiological arousal in men but not in women during expo

This study examined the memory performance of children with reading disabilities (RD) using methodology representative of three theoretical perspectives on RD subtypes: the phonological deficit, dual route, and phonological-core variable-difference models. Analyses compared the serial memory, verbal learning, and abstract visual-spatial memory performance of 45 children with RD to that of chronological-age (CA)- and reading-level (RL)-matched controls, using subtype identification methods from each of the theoretical models to classify children with RD. Phonological deficit and dual route comp

F.G., a 71-year-old right-handed man, presented with a slowly progressive deterioration in his ability to recognize faces of familiar and famous persons, contrasting with the relative preservation of other cognitive domains. His primary face perception skills were intact. Along with his face-recognition deficit, F.G. also exhibited a mild visual agnosia. A more detailed analysis of his performance on visuoperceptual tests revealed a selective deficit in retrieving the configurational representation of complex visual entities and an over-reliance on analysing individual features. Whether exemplar-specific or prototype representations were primarily used by children with mild mental retardation in a categorization task consisting of two groups of make-believe animals whose features were ill-defined was examined. Categorization performance of familiar, prototypic, and novel test phase exemplars indicated that these children were able to acquire and use both types of representations. A feature-labeling training procedure, expected to promote the formation of exemplar-specific representations prior to exemplar classification, was also incorporated within the current study'

Font-specificity in visual word-stem completion priming was examined in patients with global amnesia and Patient M.S., who had a right-occipital lobectomy. Word-stems appeared in the same or different font as study words. Amnesic patients showed normal font-specific priming (greater priming for words studied in the same than different font as test), despite impaired word-stem cued recall. Patient M.S. failed to exhibit font-specific priming, despite preserved declarative memory. Therefore, perceptual specificity in visual priming depends on visual processes mediated by the right-occipital lobe

Is face recognition 'special,' in the sense of relying on functionally and anatomically distinct mechanisms from those required for other kinds of pattern recognition? A number of different neuropsychological dissociations involving recognition and learning of faces and nonface objects are reviewed. In addition, studies of the nature of shape representation in normal face and object recognition are reviewed. The evidence from brain-damaged and normal subjects suggests that face recognition is, indeed, 'special,' and provides some clues to the functional differences between face and object reco

Children with diagnoses of either autism or Asperger's syndrome were matched on measures of verbal mental age with nonautistic control children. They were tested on their abilities to process both facial and nonfacial stimuli. There were no significant differences between the low ability autistic and control groups, but the high ability autistic and Asperger's children performed significantly worse than controls across all tests. Group averages masked substantial individual variation. The results are seen as indicating a general perceptual deficit that is not specific to faces or emotions. Thi

The vigilance of young adults with mild mental retardation and without mental retardation was compared in two experiments in which observers performed two memory demanding, cognitively based, 60-minute tests. In Experiment 1, target probability was 5% or 30% with a 1.5-second event rate. Detection by observers with mental retardation declined more rapidly than did that of observers without mental retardation in both target probability conditions; further, their response criterion became increasingly more conservative. In Experiment 2, target probability was 10% or 30% with an 8-second event ra

Reports of Alzheimer's disease patients in whom naming performance is disproportionate to other cognitive performances raise questions about the stage model, or dementia-severity level, for predicting naming performance. Thus, dementia severity as defined by Global Deterioration Scale ratings, Mini-Mental State Examination scores, and combinations of them was evaluated as a predictor of naming performance in 102 Alzheimer's patients and was found to account for approximately 1/3 of performance variability. Additional contributions from age at onset, duration, family history, and gender were ne

A connectionist model of visual search is presented, in which search is determined by patterns of grouping between distractors and between the target and the distractors. Grouping is based on conjunctive relations between simple form elements (corners, line-end terminators), and uses principles of similarity and spatial proximity. In its normal, 'unlesioned' state, the model simulates the search data generated by human subjects when they search for simple form conjunctions amongst either homogeneous or heterogeneous distractors (Humphreys & Muller, in press). In this paper, the performance of

Five young adult females with mild mental retardation were given match-to-sample training and testing to develop four classes of equivalent stimuli: two classes containing three forms each and two classes containing one spoken nonsense syllable and two forms each. All subjects demonstrated development of all possible equivalence classes involving these stimuli. For 4 of 5 subjects, the classes that included auditory stimuli developed more rapidly than those that did not.

Position-specific errors in word reading are usually associated with neglect or visual extinction on the same side as the reading problem. In this study, two patients with left-hemisphere lesions showed visual extinction on the right but reading difficulty on the left side of words and pseudowords. Further study of one patient revealed that he also had problems reading the beginning of words presented tachistoscopically or in vertical orientation. In addition, the positional difficulty was apparent when he named the letters in words. The pattern of results indicates that the positional dyslexi
