ERP correlates of attention allocation in mothers processing faces of their children.

This study employed visually evoked event-related potential (ERP) methodology to examine temporal patterns of structural and higher-level face processing in birth and foster/adoptive mothers viewing pictures of their children. Fourteen birth mothers and 14 foster/adoptive mothers engaged in a computerized task in which they viewed facial pictures of their own children, and of familiar and unfamiliar children and adults. All mothers, regardless of type, showed ERP patterns suggestive of increased attention allocation to their own children's faces compared to other child and adult faces beginnin

Marked C-tactile afferent suppression by a plastic film does not proportionately diminish pleasantness of gentle brushing.

C-tactile (CT) afferents have been proposed to play a key role in signalling the pleasant aspects of gentle touch, and individuals with hereditary disorders affecting CT function exhibit abnormal affective touch perception. We previously demonstrated that applying a thin elastic film to the skin alters the perceived pleasantness of brush stroking. Here, we investigated how a thin elastic film modulates responses in unmyelinated CT and myelinated low-threshold mechanoreceptors. Using microneurography in human subjects, we found that the film markedly suppressed firing in CT afferents during gen

Brazilian physical therapy educators' perspectives on pain education and pain curriculum implementation: A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide, yet its integration into undergraduate physical therapy education remains inconsistently implemented. Despite the availability of international curricular frameworks, gaps persist between pain science and educational practice. OBJECTIVES: To investigate physical therapy educators' self-perceived adequacy of knowledge and perspectives regarding the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) pain curriculum and to explore how pain education is understood and implemented in undergraduate training in Brazil. METHODS: We con

Intensity Discrimination of Electrocutaneous Haptic Feedback is Enhanced at Low Frequencies and With Repeated Exposure.

Electrocutaneous (EC) stimulation is a promising modality for noninvasive tactile feedback. Increasing the pulse frequency of EC stimulation has been shown to increase the perceived intensity in a nonlinear way. However, it is unclear why the relationship is nonlinear and how the nonlinearity impacts the theoretical number of discriminable sensory gradations that can be evoked by EC stimulation, as would be necessary to effectively convey the magnitude of tactile interactions. To address this, we systematically quantify just-noticeable differences (JNDs) and corresponding Weber fractions (WFs)

Attention to memory: Asymmetric enhancement of mnemonic features in auditory working memory.

Models of auditory attention propose that multiple sound features are integrated into a perceptual object and that selective attention enhances the fidelity of these object-based representations. Similar attentional mechanisms appear to operate on representations held in auditory working memory, yet evidence has largely focused on a single feature. Thus, it remains unknown whether redirecting attention to an auditory memory object enhances multiple, distinct features bound to that object, or whether such enhancement varies across features depending on modality-specific biases or prior knowledg

A Prospective Cohort Study Investigating the Role of a Screening Smell and Taste Test in Patients Following Head Injury.

BACKGROUND: Head trauma is a major cause of chemosensory deficit, with olfactory loss occurring in approximately 22% of cases. Following head injury, olfactory and gustatory loss are often unassessed; patients are often unaware of the problem, thus presenting late to specialist clinics. PRIMARY AIM: To determine the role of screening olfactory and gustatory testing in patients following head trauma. METHODS: This prospective cohort study, conducted at three secondary hospitals, included patients with head injury aged ≥ 18 years, with capacity to consent within 30 days of injury. Patients wit

Motor cortex excitability during spine shape-judgment in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a TMS motor evoked potential study.

This study investigated the neurophysiological mechanisms linking visual body perception to motor output in females with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), specifically examining how altered body schema influences corticospinal excitability. A two-stage paradigm was employed in participants with AIS and healthy controls. First, psychophysical thresholds for detecting spinal curvature were estimated. Second, single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied over the primary motor cortex (100-125 ms post-stimulus) to assess motor system reactivity to body-relevant stimuli. Cor

Clinical evaluation of pediatric olfactory disorders: a review from etiology to management.

Olfactory perception plays a fundamental role in nutrition, emotional development, and social behavior, yet olfactory disorders (OD) in children remain largely underrecognized and understudied. This mini review summarizes current evidence and proposes a structured clinical approach for the evaluation and management of pediatric OD. Etiologies are diverse, encompassing congenital syndromes such as Kallmann and CHARGE, post-infectious and post-traumatic forms, inflammatory airway diseases, and structural or iatrogenic causes. Accurate diagnosis begins with a detailed medical history and comprehe

Visual Word Form Area demonstrates individual and task-agnostic consistency but inter-individual variability.

Ventral Occipital Temporal Cortex (VOTC) contains a mosaic of categorically-selective functional regions that respond to visual stimuli. Within left VOTC lies the Visual Word Form Area (VWFA) - a text-selective region that develops as individuals learn to read. While there is consistency in the general location of text-selective responses - within the posterior occipitotemporal sulcus (OTS) - there is substantial variability across individuals in the size and precise anatomical location. Moreover, debate continues regarding whether VWFA a) encodes the visual features of text, versus b) is driv

Electrodiagnostic Tests as Potential Efficacy Endpoints in Clinical Trials of Novel Pharmacological Therapies for Acquired Retinal Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Electrodiagnostic tests (EDTs) provide non-invasive, objective, and measurable indications of retinal and visual pathway function. These hold the promise of evaluating drug efficacy and disease progression over shorter periods than traditional "end-stage" outcome measures (e.g., best-corrected visual acuity) in various ophthalmological pathologies. The International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision has defined rigorous standards for EDTs, intended to optimize diagnostic power, enabling meaningful inter-laboratory comparisons and facilitating application as outcome m

Binocular and Fellow Eye Acuity Deficits in Amblyopia: Impact of Fixation Instability and Sensory Factors.

Amblyopia, a neurodevelopmental disorder, is commonly assessed through amblyopic eye visual acuity (VA) deficits, but recent studies also highlight abnormalities in the fellow eye. This study quantified binocular and fellow/dominant eye VA in individuals with amblyopia and strabismus without amblyopia and examined factors influencing these measures, including fixation eye movement (FEM) abnormalities. Identifying which subsets of patients-such as those with nystagmus, concurrent strabismus, or greater fixation instability-exhibit more pronounced deficits in binocular visual acuity and binocula

Visual functions in non-overlapping visual field defects: dichoptic experiments in healthy subjects with simulated scotomas.

In clinical care, glaucoma patients are often assumed to have normal vision as long as each point of visual space is seen normally by at least one eye. Recent studies have challenged this assumption. In glaucoma, visual perception of spatially fragmented binocular input may be altered by long-term neural adaptation and by acute sensory effects. These two components cannot be disentangled easily in glaucoma patients, but the latter component can be isolated with simulated visual field defects in healthy subjects. Therefore, the aim of this study was to find out if simulated non-overlapping visu

Shift in excitation-inhibition balance underlies perceptual learning of temporal discrimination.

Temporal perceptual learning (TPL) constitutes a unique and profound demonstration of neural plasticity within the brain. Our understanding for the neurometabolic changes associated with TPL on the other hand has been limited in part by the use of traditional fMRI approaches. Since plasticity in the visual cortex has been shown to underlie perceptual learning of visual information, we tested the hypothesis that TPL of an auditory interval involves a similar change in plasticity of the auditory pathway and if so, whether these changes take place in a lower-order sensory-specific brain area such

Updating Prospective Self-Efficacy Beliefs About Cardiac Interoception in Anorexia Nervosa: An Experimental and Computational Study.

Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) typically hold altered beliefs about their body that they struggle to update, including global, prospective beliefs about their ability to know and regulate their body and particularly their interoceptive states. While clinical questionnaire studies have provided ample evidence on the role of such beliefs in the onset, maintenance, and treatment of AN, psychophysical studies have typically focused on perceptual and 'Локально' beliefs. Across two experiments, we examined how women at the acute AN (N = 86) and post-acute AN state (N = 87), compared to matched hea
