In a retrospective study 716 consecutive newly diagnosed and untreated hyperthyroid patients were examined in regard to the frequency of silent thyroiditis and postpartum thyroiditis. Six patients (0.8%) had possible silent thyroiditis (24-hour radioiodine uptake less than or equal to 5% and hyperthyroidism without anterior neck pain). None occurred within one year postpartum. We conclude that silent thyroiditis is a rare cause of hyperthyroidism in our thyroid clinic. The authors report a new case of a cerebro-vascular accident following the stopping of an infusion of a beta-mimetic drug to inhibit uterine contractions. The clinical symptomatology and the spontaneous recovery (over more than 6 months) makes it correct to call this pathological condition "an acute cerebral vascular disorder of a benign nature". It is not known how the cerebral vessels were affected by the beta-mimetic drugs.

Six patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosed during late pregnancy or shortly thereafter are reported. Three patients had high-grade lymphoma and three, intermediate-grade histologic features. Data were 5091 calvings from 3904 cows for milk fever, retained placenta, mastitis within 48-h postpartum, calving difficulty, and 48-h calf livability collected from 27 large California dairies analyzed for genetic interrelationships among parturition problems. Heritability of each trait was small; however, retained placenta had large positive genetic correlations with milk fever (.34) and mastitis (.33). The overall incidence rate, in a total of 2017 calvings on seven farms, was 16.1 per cent for retained placenta and 37.3 per cent for primary metritis. The progress and management of fifty-eight obstetric patients who received an accidental dural puncture is described. Headache attributable to dural puncture occurred in 85% of patients managed conservatively. Epidural infusion or repeat epidural bolus injections of saline after delivery reduced the incidence to 65%. A case of clostridial uterine infection following prolonged labor and vaginal delivery is presented. Uterine myonecrosis with gas formation was diagnosed by radiologic studies. Antimicrobial therapy with megadosage penicillin was initiated and total abdominal hysterectomy performed. Three episodes of cardiac arrest occurred during surgery. Hypertensive blood pressure readings were recorded in 282 women from a group of 1025 consecutive patients returning for their sixth-week postpartum visit.
