[Compulsory measures and pathological creatine kinase levels in psychiatric in-patients].

The aim of this study was to investigate the association of compulsory measures (CM) with pathological Creatine Kinase (CK) levels in 317 patients admitted to a secure psychiatric ward. The assumptions is that CK-activity is increased prior to administration of CM because increases in CK-levels may represent aggressive behaviour as precursors of a higher chance of administrating CM. The CK-levels were assessed immediately following admission. During the course of the patients' stay the frequency of different CM was assessed by the use of the Staff Observation Aggression Scale. In a CHAID analy

Nursing home residents dying with dementia in Flanders, Belgium: a nationwide postmortem study on clinical characteristics and quality of dying.

OBJECTIVES: There is a lack of large-scale, nationwide data describing clinical characteristics and quality of dying of nursing home residents dying with dementia. We set out to investigate quality of end-of-life care and quality of dying of nursing home residents with dementia in Flanders, Belgium. DESIGN/SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: To obtain representativity, we conducted a postmortem study (2010) using random cluster sampling. In selected nursing homes, all deceased residents with dementia in a period of 3 months were reported. For each case, a structured questionnaire was filled in by the nurse

Gastroprotective effects of telmisartan on experimentally-induced gastric ulcers in rats.

Telmisartan is an angiotensin II T1 receptor blocker (ARB) with partial peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) agonistic properties; two actions that are suggested to be efficacious for protecting against gastric ulcers. Hence, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the gastroprotective effect of telmisartan (1, 3, and 10 mg/kg) on indomethacin- and cold restraint stress (CRS)-induced gastric ulcer models in rats. Candesartan, another ARB with the lowest PPARgamma affinity, was used to justify the possible role of PPARgamma agonistic activity of telmisartan in gastr

Restraint-induced corticosterone secretion and hypothalamic CRH mRNA expression are augmented during acute withdrawal from chronic cocaine administration.

Stress responses during cocaine withdrawal likely contribute to drug relapse and may be intensified as a consequence of prior cocaine use. The present study examined changes in stressor-induced activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis during acute withdrawal from chronic cocaine administration. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats received daily administration of cocaine (30 mg/kg, i.p.) or saline for 14 days. Twenty-four hours after the last injection, rats in each group were sacrificed under stress-free conditions or following 30 min of immobilization. Plasma corticosterone (COR

Death in custody: a historical analysis.

This research delineates the historical evolution of death in custody. A retrospective, exploratory analysis of 145,425 cases from Maryland's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, occurring from 1939 to 2004, was conducted. Two hundred and two custodial deaths were identified and subsequently examined relative to time, agency, decedent characteristics, and cause and manner of death. Results indicate that there have been substantive changes in custodial deaths over time. Cardiovascular disease was the most frequent cause of death from the 1930s to the 1970s, except for the 1940s, when syphilis

Stress-induced differences in primary and secondary resistance against bacterial sepsis corresponds with diverse corticotropin releasing hormone receptor expression by pulmonary CD11c+ MHC II+ and CD11c- MHC II+ APCs.

Stress responses have been associated with altered immunity and depending upon the type of stressor, can have diverse effects on disease outcomes. As the first line of defense against potential pathogens, alterations in cellular immune responses along the respiratory tract can have a significant impact on the manifestation of local and systemic disease. Utilizing a murine model of respiratory pneumonia, the current study investigated the effects of restraint stress on the induction of primary and secondary immunity along the respiratory tract, influencing host susceptibility. Effect of paroxetine on enhanced contextual fear induced by single prolonged stress in rats.

RATIONALE: Single prolonged stress (SPS) is an animal model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that can reproduce enhanced hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal negative feedback. OBJECTIVES: We examined whether SPS can produce an enhanced psychophysiological reactivity to laboratory stressors unrelated to trauma and whether paroxetine (PRX) can alleviate the enhanced anxiety and fear response in rats subjected to SPS. Furthermore, the effect of PRX on pain sensitivity was examined in rats with and without SPS. METHODS: Rats were subjected to SPS (restraint for 2 h, forced swim for 20 min, and

Effects of mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid receptor blockade on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal function in female rats prenatally exposed to ethanol.

BACKGROUND: Rats prenatally exposed to ethanol (E) exhibit hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) hyperresponsiveness, demonstrated by increased and/or prolonged elevations of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and/or corticosterone (CORT) in response to stressors. The present study examined the possible role of CORT feedback deficits in mediating this hyperresponsiveness by examining HPA function following mineralocorticoid (MR) and glucocorticoid (GR) receptor blockade. METHODS: Adult female Sprague-Dawley offspring from E, pair-fed (PF), and control (C) groups were injected subcutaneously wi

Characterization of dopamine receptor subtypes involved in experimentally induced gastric and duodenal ulcers in rats.

There are conflicting reports about the role of dopamine in gastric and duodenal ulcers. This investigation was undertaken to characterize the specific subtypes of dopamine receptor involved in gastric and duodenal ulceration. Administration of dopamine D1 agonist fenoldopam and dopamine D2 antagonist sulpiride elicited a significant decrease in acid secretion, total acid output, pepsin output and histamine content in the gastric juice, and reduced ulcer-index values, in pylorus-ligated rats. However, dopamine D1 receptor antagonist SCH 39166 ((-)-trans-6,7,7a,8,9,13b-hexahydro-3-chloro-2-hydr

D1 and D2 dopamine and opiate receptors are involved in the restraint stress-induced sensitization to the psychostimulant effects of amphetamine.

The time course of the restraint stress-induced sensitization to the stimulant effects of amphetamine (AMPH, 0.5 mg/kg IP) on locomotor activity was investigated for up to 8 days. In a series of separate experiments, the involvement of opioid and dopaminergic mechanisms in the development of acute restraint stress-induced behavioral sensitization were characterized. Both a single restraint session (2 h) and chronic restraint (2 h per day for 7 days) similarly potentiated the effects of AMPH on motor activity. This behavioral sensitization was prevented by the administration of naltrexone (2 mg

A Predictive Scoring Model for Perioperative Psychiatric Symptom Exacerbation in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders: Development and Internal Validation.

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders are vulnerable to clinically significant perioperative psychiatric deterioration, including delirium, which may require consultation-liaison psychiatry management and complicate medical and surgical care in general hospitals. Although postoperative delirium and nondelirious psychiatric worsening have been studied separately, no validated prediction tool has integrated these clinically relevant outcomes for perioperative risk assessment in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder. OBJECTIVE: To develop and internally validate a pr

Mycobacterium vaccae ATCC 15483T administered to nulliparous C57BL/6N mice prior to mating protects their male offspring against the negative consequences of prenatal stress.

The prenatal period is a vulnerable phase for the offspring's development in utero and ex utero. Accordingly, negative environmental influences such as chronic maternal stress pose a major risk factor for the offspring to develop a variety of mental and physical disorders later in life. Many of these pathologies are accompanied by an over-reactive immune system and chronic low-grade inflammation, and prospective human and mechanistic animal studies strengthen the idea that an exaggerated immune (re)activity plays a causal role in their pathogenesis. In line with the latter, we have shown in mi

Mechanisms for hypothermia during anaphylactic hypotension in awake rats.

Hypothermia develops during systemic anaphylaxis in rodents. The aim of this study was to elucidate the mechanism for the hypothermia by assessing the roles of locomotor activity, tail heat dissipation, heat production in the brown adipose tissue (BAT) activity, and chemical mediators during ovalbumin-induced anaphylactic hypotension in awake rats. We measured the core body temperature (Tcore) and mean blood pressure (MBP), along with the surface temperature of the interscapular region (TiScap), an indirect measure of BAT activity, and the tail (Ttail). During anaphylaxis, MBP decreased to the
