Effect of precocious and delayed afferent arrival on synapse localization on the amphibian Mauthner cell.

Afferents often form synapses on restricted regions of their target cells. The connections between vestibular axons and the Mauthner cell are an example of this sort of specificity. The Mauthner cells are a pair of identifiable central neurons in certain fish and amphibians. In the axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), the large vestibular axons form club endings on only one portion of one dendrite of the Mauthner cell. During development, this specific distribution might result from nothing more than when and where the growing axons and dendrite meet (spatiotemporal model). Alternatively, the distri

Mechanical Contact Conditions in Wearable Reflectance Photoplethysmography: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases remain a major global health burden, highlighting the need for long-term physiological monitoring. Photoplethysmography (PPG) is widely used in wearable devices for noninvasive monitoring of heart rate (HR), rhythm, and oxygen saturation in mobile health (mHealth) apps. However, the reliability of wearable reflectance PPG depends on sensing conditions, including sensor-skin contact force and pressure. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review maps how contact force and contact pressure have been defined, controlled, measured, represented, and reported in wearable or w

Sugar-sweetened beverage regulations and nutrient profiling models in five South Asian countries: a scoping review of available evidence and policy gaps.

BACKGROUND: Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) contribute to the rising burden of non-communicable diseases in South Asia. Evidence on existing regulatory approaches and the use of nutrient profiling models (NPMs) remains fragmented. This scoping review maps available evidence on SSB regulation in five South Asian countries. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review following Joanna Briggs Institute guidance and PRISMA-ScR. Seven databases and grey literature were searched for studies published up to January 2025. Eligible sources examined SSB-related regulatory approaches in Bangladesh, India, Ne

Which calcium preparation should we use in paediatric resuscitation? A comprehensive review of basic physiology, pharmacokinetics, and clinical evidence.

BACKGROUND: The optimal choice between calcium gluconate (CaGN) and calcium chloride (CaCl₂) for hypocalcaemia correction during paediatric critical illness and resuscitation remains debated. This literature review aimed to compare the efficacy and safety profiles of both preparations to determine an evidence-based clinical preference. METHODS: A comprehensive review of in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trials involving critically ill patients was conducted, focusing on the pharmacokinetics, therapeutic efficacy (measured by the rise in ionised calcium, iCa2⁺), and comparative adverse event pro

Complementary visual localization and tactile mapping approach for robotic perception of millimeter-sized objects with irregular surfaces.

Humanoid robots and human-machine interaction technologies are essential for perceiving and manipulating millimeter-scale objects with irregular surfaces in extreme environments, such as outer space, radioactive zones, and hazardous sites with explosive ordnance, where human access is restricted. A vision-based perception approach provides spatial and positional information about objects but relying solely on it for robot manipulation poses challenges due to limitations in detectable object size, as well as sensitivity to external factors such as focusing issues, occlusion, and lighting condit

Attapulgite Nanocomposites for Cartilage and Osteochondral Repair: Material-Tissue Matching, Evidence-Graded Mechanisms and Translation.

Attapulgite (ATP; palygorskite) is a fibrous magnesium aluminum silicate that can reinforce hydrated polymer networks, provide a surface for molecular interactions, and participate in formulation-dependent ion or drug delivery. Although ATP has been studied most extensively in bone-oriented composites, its more distinctive role in cartilage repair may be as a spatially controlled regulator of the scaffold microenvironment rather than as a uniformly distributed bioactive filler. This review therefore examines ATP from a cartilage-first perspective. Direct ATP evidence, effects of modified ATP,

Timed Ang2-Targeted Therapy Identifies the Angiopoietin-Tie Pathway as Key Regulator of Fatal Lymphogenous Metastasis.

Recent clinical and preclinical advances have highlighted the existence of a previously hypothesized lymphogenous route of metastasis. However, due to a lack of suitable preclinical modeling tools, its contribution to long-term disease outcome and relevance for therapy remain controversial. Here, we established a genetically engineered mouse model (GEMM) fragment-based tumor model uniquely sustaining a functional network of intratumoral lymphatics that facilitates seeding of fatal peripheral metastases. Multiregimen survival studies and correlative patient data identified primary tumor-derived

Diffusion-weighted imaging in the evaluation of odontogenic cysts and tumours.

OBJECTIVE: The differentiation between keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT) and other cystic/predominantly cystic odontogenic tumours is difficult on conventional CT and MR sequences as there is overlap in the imaging characteristics of these lesions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and to assess the performance of apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) in the differential diagnosis of odontogenic cysts and tumours. METHODS: 20 patients with odontogenic cysts and tumours of the maxillomandibular region were examined with DWI. Diffusion-

The association between repetitive behaviours, impulsivity and hyperactivity in people with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for assessments of psychological difference and disorder in people who have more severe intellectual disability (ID). Hyperactivity and impulsivity are two behavioural domains of importance as they are correlated with self-injury and aggression and this alludes to a shared cognitive correlate of compromised behavioural inhibition. Additionally, compromised behavioural inhibition is demonstrably related to repetitive behaviour and the latter might be expected to be associated with impulsivity and hyperactivity. METHODS: The Activity Questionnaire (TAQ) was developed

Connexin46 mutations in autosomal dominant congenital cataract.

Loci for autosomal dominant "zonular pulverulent" cataract have been mapped to chromosomes 1q (CZP1) and 13q (CZP3). Here we report genetic refinement of the CZP3 locus and identify underlying mutations in the gene for gap-junction protein alpha-3 (GJA3), or connexin46 (Cx46). Linkage analysis gave a significantly positive two-point LOD score (Z) at marker D13S175 (maximum Z [Zmax]=>7.0; maximum recombination frequency [thetamax] =0). Haplotyping indicated that CZP3 probably lies in the genetic interval D13S1236-D13S175-D13S1316-cen-13pter, close to GJA3. Sequencing of a genomic clone isolated

Recurrent mutation of immunoglobulin and c-myc genes and differential expression of cell surface antigens occur in variant cell lines derived from a Burkitt lymphoma.

The phenotypic and molecular genetic characteristics of 4 variant sublines of the Burkitt lymphoma cell line Namalwa have been examined. The sublines are DNA-fingerprint-identical and derived from a monoclonal tumour, as shown by a rearrangement of the T-cell-receptor beta-chain gene common to the 4 sublines. There is non-co-ordinate expression of MHC class-I MHC class-II, surface immunoglobulin and a number of antigens recognized by CD MAbs on the different sublines. These different phenotypes of the cells are reminiscent of B cells arrested in varying states of cellular maturity. On Southern

Callosal and ipsilateral cortical connections of the body surface representations in SI and SII of tree shrews.

Injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were used to study the connections of the first and second somatosensory areas (SI and SII) in tree shrews. The locations of callosally projecting neurons in SI were determined by placing large injections of HRP in the SI region of one cerebral hemisphere and determining the organization of SI of the other cerebral hemisphere with microelectrode mapping. Many callosally projecting neurons were revealed in lateral SI representing the face, especially the glabrous nose. A sparse scattering of callosally projecting neurons were located more centrally in

Bilateral renal agenesis/hypoplasia/dysplasia (BRAHD): postmortem analysis of 45 cases with breakpoint mapping of two de novo translocations.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral renal agenesis/hypoplasia/dysplasia (BRAHD) is a relatively common, lethal malformation in humans. Established clinical risk factors include maternal insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and male sex of the fetus. In the majority of cases, no specific etiology can be established, although teratogenic, syndromal and single gene causes can be assigned to some cases. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: 45 unrelated fetuses, stillbirths or infants with lethal BRAHD were ascertained through a single regional paediatric pathology service (male:female 34:11 or 3.1:1). The embryonic organization of the genital disc studied in genetic mosaics ofDrosophila melanogaster.

The embryonic organization of the sexually dimorphic genital disc was studied in genetic mosaics resulting (a) from early loss of a chromosome or (b) from mitotic recombination. (a) Early Loss of a Chromosome. Three types of mosaics were produced - purely female mosaics, purely male mosaics, and gynandromorphs. They show that the genital disc arises from a group of cells in the ventral region of the embryo somewhat larger than that giving rise to a single foreleg (Table 2). Within this group of cells three regions can be distinguished that are present in both sexes: an anterior, a medial, and

Sentinel lymph node mapping in patients with breast cancer using a photoacoustic/ultrasound dual-modality imaging system with carbon nanoparticles as the contrast agent: a pilot study.

Assessing the metastatic status of axillary lymph nodes is a common clinical practice in the staging of early breast cancers. Yet sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) are the regional lymph nodes believed to be the first stop along the lymphatic drainage path of the metastasizing cancer cells. Compared to axillary lymph node dissection, sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) helps reduce morbidity and side effects. Current SLNB methods, however, still have suboptimum properties, such as restrictions due to nuclide accessibility and a relatively low therapeutic efficacy when only a single contrast agent is u

Connections of area 2 of somatosensory cortex with the anterior pulvinar and subdivisions of the ventroposterior complex in macaque monkeys.

The principal goal of the present study was to determine the thalamic connections of area 2 of postcentral somatosensory cortex of monkeys. The placement of injections of anatomical tracers (horseradish peroxidase, wheat germ agglutinin, or 3H-proline) was guided by extensive microelectrode maps of cortex in the region of the injection site. These maps identified the body parts represented in the cortex included in the injection site, and provided information about the physiological boundaries of area 2, which was related later to the cortical architecture. Most injections were placed in the r

Elevated expression of tyrosine kinase DDR2 in primary biliary cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is characterized by chronic progressive destruction of small intrahepatic bile ducts with portal inflammation and cholestasis, leading to fibrosis. METHODS: We utilized a novel restriction analysis system to profile the expression of tyrosine kinases (TKs). This methodology targets a conserved sequence present in the majority of human TKs, and exploits the known restriction map of the TK cDNA sequences. We isolated mRNA from biliary epithelial cell (BEC)-enriched cell fractions, amplified the TK transcripts using degenerative primers, and identified

Evaluation of mitral leaflet motion by echocardiography and jet direction by Doppler color flow mapping to determine the mechanisms of mitral regurgitation.

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to assess the accuracy of two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography in determining the mechanism of mitral regurgitation, as compared with direct inspection of the valve at operation. BACKGROUND: Valve repair for mitral regurgitation offers substantial advantages over valve replacement, but it is technically more demanding and requires understanding of the mechanism of dysfunction. METHODS: We studied 286 patients undergoing mitral valve repair. Intraoperative two-dimensional echocardiography was used to classify mitral leaflet motion as excessive, norm

Ovarian cancer presentation and management in sub-Saharan Africa: a scooping review protocal.

INTRODUCTION: Ovarian cancer is a leading gynecological malignancy mortality globally. Clinical outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are poor, largely due to late-stage presentation and limited accessing to effective treatment options. Referral pathways also delay diagnosis and compromise delivery of guideline-concordant care. A comprehensive mapping of evidence on ovarian cancer presentation and management across SSA is needed to characterize what is known, where evidence is concentrated, and where critical gaps persist. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This protocol describes a systematic scoping revi

Magnetic resonance imaging and multi-detector computed tomography assessment of extracellular compartment in ischemic and non-ischemic myocardial pathologies.

Myocardial pathologies are major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Early detection of loss of cellular integrity and expansion in extracellular volume (ECV) in myocardium is critical to initiate effective treatment. The three compartments in healthy myocardium are: intravascular (approximately 10% of tissue volume), interstitium (approximately 15%) and intracellular (approximately 75%). Myocardial cells, fibroblasts and vascular endothelial/smooth muscle cells represent intracellular compartment and the main proteins in the interstitium are types I/III collagens. Microscopic studies
