Hantaviruses.

Since the recognition of the hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in the USA in 1993, interest in hantavirus diseases has intensified worldwide. It is clear that hantaviruses have been historically responsible for a variety of human illnesses. Hantaviruses form a separate genus within the Bunyaviridae family. There are currently >20 recognised sero/genotypes and many others are under investigation. Each hantavirus type appears to be specific to a different rodent host. Virus phylogeny very closely reflects rodent phylogeny. The different hantavirus types are associated with different types of d

Surveillance and spatiotemporal associations of rabies in rodents and lagomorphs in the United States, 1985-1994.

Between 1985 and 1994, 368 cases of rabies in rodents (95% of reports) and lagomorphs (5%) were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia (USA), from 22 states. This was a 354% increase from the period 1971 to 1984. Most reports were cases of rabies in woodchucks (Marmota monax) (n = 317), primarily from the eastern United States, which has been recently experiencing an epizootic of raccoon (Procyon lotor) rabies. Cases of rabies in woodchucks were temporally and spatially associated with reports of raccoon rabies. Antigenic or genetic characterization of var

Tranquillization of cane rats (Thryonomys swinderianus) with a depot neuroleptic (pipothiazine palmitate).

Stress-induced self-trauma is a major cause of mortality among captive cane rats (Thryonomys swinderianus). Six subadult female cane rats were injected with a long-acting neuroleptic drug (pipothiazine palmitate 25 mg/kg), and an equal number were injected with isotonic saline. Their behaviour and reactions to stimuli were recorded daily. After 5 weeks, treated animals continued to display significantly less stress-related behaviour than the control group. In addition, two abbreviated studies were conducted. Eleven subadult males were treated identically to the females. Their behaviour was rec

The role of rodents as reservoirs for some diseases in new reclaimed areas in north Sinai.

In a trial to determine the role of Sinai rodents as reservoirs to rickettsial diseases, the IFA technique was used to detect the presence of R. typhi and spotted fever group in blood of some commensal and wild rodent species collected in Sinai during the last five years (1985-1989). Out of 277 Rattus spp. collected in El Arish (47.3%) were positive to R. typhi and only (5.9%) of 35 Mus musculus were positive to R. typhi. As for Gerbillus spp. only (1.5%) of 206 animals were positive for R. typhi. The positive cases of spotted fever group were (34.6%) in Rattus spp. and (18.8%) in Gerbillus sp

Effects of ethosuximide and tetramethylsuccinimide on cultured cortical neurons.

In cultured cortical neurons, ethosuximide (ESM) had unexpected actions for an antiepileptic drug; it slightly diminished the effects of inhibitory neurotransmitters, GABA, and glycine. ESM had no direct membrane effects, did not change action potential characteristics or alter spontaneous activity, and did not reverse the effects of convulsants that are GABA antagonists. The structurally related convulsant tetramethylsuccinimide (TMSM) reduced the amplitude of GABA-mediated inhibitory postsynaptic potentials and antagonized responses to applied GABA, effects not reversed by ESM. The convulsan

Primary plague pneumonia contracted from a domestic cat at South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Primary plague pneumonia occurred in a 47-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman shortly after face-to-face exposure to her plague pneumonia-infected cat. Both died. Field investigation revealed a recent plague epizootic in squirrels and chipmunks around the patient's home. Control measures included active surveillance and chemoprophylaxis of 197 contacts to the victim, a community alert on methods of self- and pet protection, and application of insecticide to reduce rodent flea populations. No secondary cases occurred.

Thrombolytic agents: effects of local infusion on microvascular physiology and macrovascular ultrastructure.

Microvascular responses in live preparations of rat cremaster muscle were studied with intravital light microscopy following infusions of streptokinase, streptokinase-plasminogen complex, or urokinase into the iliac artery. Structural changes occurring in the endothelium of the iliac arteries were documented by electron microscopy. Though no functional microvascular changes were documented, endothelial cell injury and luminal surface fibrin deposits were identified in the iliac arteries locally infused with the thrombolytic agents. In addition, platelets in various stages of activation were id

Association of Malassezia (Pityrosporum) pachydermatis with sarcoptic mange in New York State.

Malassezia (Pityrosporum) pachydermatis consistently accompanied sarcoptic mange in all red foxes (Vulpes fulva), porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum), and coyotes (Canis latrans) examined. This yeastlike microorganism has not heretofore been reported on any of these hosts. Its presence on the exoskeleton of Sarcoptes scabiei taken from these animals suggests a carrier role for the mite. The yeast may be saprophytic or a secondary pathogen.

Roles of lithogenic bile and cystic duct occlusion in the pathogenesis of acute cholecystitis.

The hypothesis that the elements essential for the induction of acute cholecystitis are the presence of lithogenic bile and cystic duct occlusion was tested in the prairie dog gallstone model. Neither the presence of gallstones alone nor acute cystic duct occlusion alone resulted in acute inflammation of the gallbladder. Acute cholecystitis developed in prairie dog gallbladders containing cholesterol-saturated bile, with or without gallstones, shortly after cystic duct occlusion. These data suggest that the factors essential for the induction of acute cholecystitis are the presence of lithogen

Diabetes mellitus in the 13-lined ground squirrel (Citellus tridecemlineatus).

Spontaneous diabetes mellitus was diagnosed in six of 126, 13-lined ground squirrels, Citellus tridecemlineatus. Serum glucose values were significantly higher in the diabetic ground squirrels than in the non-diabetic ground squirrels, while serum insulin values of fasted diabetic squirrels were significantly lower than fasted nondiabetic ground squirrels. In addition, the classic diabetic signs of poly-dipsia, polyuria, glycosuria, ketonuria, polyphasia, and weight loss were present. The proportion of islet tissue to total pancreatic area in diabetic ground squirrels was less than 25% of that

Soil ecology of Coccidioides immitis at Amerindian middens in California.

Outbreaks of coccidioidomycosis and isolation of Coccidioides immitis have been reported from Amerindian middens. This study was undertaken to determine the most important ecological component(s) for the occurrence of C. immitis at archeological sites. Soils from 10 former Indian villages with no prior history of coccidioidal infection were collected and cultured. The physicochemical properties of the midden soils were compared with nonmidden soils and positive soils. The following theories for the sporadic distribution of the pathogen in the soil of the Lower Sonoran Life Zone were considered

Powassan and Silverwater viruses: ecology of two Ontario arboviruses.

Powassan virus was isolated from a pool of Ixodes marxi ticks collected during late August 1962, from a red squirrel, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus, and from blood obtained from a red squirrel during early October 1962 near Powassan, Ontario, where a child contracted fatal encephalitis due to this virus in September 1958. The frequent detection of Powassan virus neutralizing antibody in sera of squirrels captured during autumn, but rarely at other seasons, and the frequent I. marxi infestation of squirrels, some of which contain antibody, but the lack of occurrence of I. marxi on other forest rodent
