Renal autotransplants in sheep: investigation of renal function and renovascular hypertension.

1. A novel surgical preparation of sheep with a cervical renal autotransplant has been developed. 2. Glomerular filtration rate and effective renal plasma flow were 25.1 +/- 1.0 ml/min and 208 +/- 10 ml/min respectively (n = 26). 3. The responses to water load and deprivation, to AVP injection, to Na depletion and intravenous hypertonic saline load show the kidneys responded in an appropriate physiological manner. 4. Constriction of the carotid-renal artery to reduce mean renal arterial pressure to 23 +/- 4 mmHg (n = 4) resulted in an increase in systemic mean arterial pressure from 70 +/- 4 m…

Some effects of copper deficiency on leucocyte function in sheep and cattle.

Peripheral blood leucocytes from copper-deficient (less than 8 mumol per litre plasma) and copper-sufficient (more than 8 mumol per litre) e … stimulation with opsonised zymosan. Their viability was similar to that of leucocytes from control sheep and was unaffected for up to three hours after stimulation.

Role of carotid chemoreflex in respiratory acclimatization to hypoxemia in goat and sheep.

The role of the carotid body chemoreflex in the ventilatory acclimatization to chronic hypoxia was studied in the unanesthetized goat and sheep. The time-cours of changes in ventilation, PCO2, pH and PO2 of arterial blood and cisternal fluid (CF) were measured before and following exposure to a simulated altitude of 3660-5000 m, with and without intact carotid sinus nerves. At sea level, after section of carotid sinus nerves most animals hypoventilated chronically, and developed mild arterial hypoxemia and hypercapnia. Upon exposure to acute hypoxia, all of the intact animals hyperventilated a…

Respiratory function of the larynx in developing sheep and the influence of sleep state.

The activities of laryngeal abductor and adductor muscles were recorded in conjunction with other respiratory muscles in unanaesthetized chronically monitored foetal, newborn and adult sheep. In foetuses, rhythmical breathing movements occurred in the presence of rapid eye movements and a low voltage electrocorticogram (REM state) and were accompanied by phasic laryngeal abduction; adductor muscles and intercostals were largely inactive. During the foetal non-REM state laryngeal adductor muscles were tonically active at a low level, but the glottis remained open. Deep inspiratory efforts which…

Smooth muscle cells in the testicular capsule of the horse, pig and sheep.

Smooth muscle cells are present in the tunica albuginea testis of the horse, pig and sheep. typical fusiform muscle cells constitute a distinct layer up to 0.3 micrometer thick in the horse; there are fewer muscle cells, mainly of the branched form, in the pig; whereas in the sheep the muscle component is least well developed, with some cells intermediate in form between smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts (myofibroblasts). Attention is drawn to the continuity of this capsular muscle with the smooth muscle associated with the vasculature of the spermatic cord in the horse. This association sug…

Diuretic effect of intraventricular and intravenous infusions of noradrenaline in conscious sheep.

Infusion of noradrenaline at rates between 32-160 nmol.min-1 for 30 min into one lateral cerebral ventricle of conscious sheep caused a diuresis which was accompanied by negative solute-free water reabsorption and which lasted for 90-120 min. The range of noradrenaline infusion rates used reflects differences between individual animals in the rate of infusion necessry to cause diuresis. Intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion of noradrenaline at half the diuretic rate caused no significant changes in urine flow. The diuresis induced by ICV noradrenaline infusion was prevented by concurrent ICV …

Minaxolone, a new steroidal anesthetic. Pharmacokinetics and organ extraction in sheep.

The pharmacokinetics of minaxolone, a new steroidal anesthetic agent, were derived after continuous intravenous infusion and bolus administration in the chronically catheterized sheep. There was a linear relationship between the steady-state blood concentration after continuous iv infusion and the infusion rate used, indicating minaxolone pharmacokinetics were linear. Further experimental evidence in support of this finding was the lack of dose dependence in any pharmacokinetic parameter following bolus doses through the clinical range of 12.5--100 mg. Minaxolone was shown to have a high total…

A survey of sheep losses and their causes on commercial farms in the north of Scotland.

A three year survey on sheep deaths and their causes was conducted on 10 commercial farms in the north of Scotland. Diseases and other trauma associated with the perinatal period accounted for 56.81% of all ewe deaths, while pneumonia, parasitic gastroenteritis, torsion of the bowel and haemorrhagic enteritis (redgut) accounted for a further 21.7%. No one disease condition predominated in the rams and hoggs. In lambs, most deaths occurred between birth and four days old (77.86%). Causes came in the form of starvation and exposure (34.2%), stillbirths (18.2%), lambing injuries (11.06%), infecti…

Evaluation of a formalin-inactivated Rift Valley fever vaccine in sheep.

A formalin-inactivated Rift Valley fever (RVF) vaccine prepared in cell culture for human use was immunogenic in sheep. Vaccine was administered as a single dose of diluted (1:5) or undiluted vaccine with or without an adjuvant. Serum-neutralizing antibodies induced by RVF vaccine persisted for at least 7 months. Seven of 11 vaccinated sheep with prechallenge plaque-reduction neutralization (PRN80) antibody titers of less than or equal to 10 were protected against challenge exposure with 10(6) plaque-forming units of Zagazig 501 strain of RVF virus. Challenge exposure induced abortion in 2 of …

Trypanosomes in the lymph nodes of cattle and sheep infected with Trypanosoma congolense.

The prefemoral lymph nodes of two calves and a sheep infected with a stock of Trypanosoma congolense transmitted by Glossina morsitans were examined histologically for the presence of trypanosomes. Ten days after infection trypanosomes were found in the subcapsular sinuses of the nodes of a calf and the sheep but parasites were absent from the blood at this time. Trypanosomes were also detected in the prefemeral lymph node of the other calf on examination 30 days after infection, when parasites were also present in the blood. These observations provide further evidence that extravascular foci …

Effect of exogenous gonadotrophin (PMSG) on the antral follicle population in the sheep.

Follicles were obtained from the ovaries of four groups of 15 ewes. Ewes in the control group were ovariectomized on the 12th day of the oestrous cycle. The other ewes were all given PMSG on the 12th day of the cycle; some were ovariectomized 24 or 40 h later, the others were given prostaglandin followed by hCG and were ovariectomized 6 or 12 h after the hCG injection. All follicles greater than 2 mm in diameter were measured and examined macroscopically for signs of atresia. Some were subjected to detailed morphological examination, the pattern of steroid secretion was determined in others. A

An in-vitro technique for studying fleece-rot and fly strike in sheep.

Fleece-rot was experimentally induced in-vitro by wetting and incubating Merino wool samples embedded in serum-agar. Gravid Lucilia cuprina were readily-attracted to these wool culture plates to oviposit. Where serum was freely available to newly-hatched larvae, fly strike and larval development ensued. Using this technique, fleece-rot and oviposition were found to be markedly influenced by the availability of protein and by bacterial activity, particularly that of Pseudomonas spp. The results indicated that odours emanating from wool culture plates containing the latter species played an impo
