Vertical and horizontal posture during suited immersion: similarity and differences according to some body functions.

The role of axial body orientation was weighed during acute adaptation to suit immersion (SI) in 3 hr vertical (SIv, n=4) exposure series, and 3 d experiments in which six volunteers participated in both SIv and SIh. Various types of SI recruited different hormonal mechanisms to induce similar reactions of the water-electrolyte metabolism (WEM). Changes in the body position relative to the gravity vector modified equally strength and dynamics of the WEM regulation. The experimental data suggest that osmo- and volume-regulation reactions to SIv shown the response to the actual volumetric stimul

Autonomic reaction to vestibular damage.

The vestibular system provides inputs to many neurons in the brain stem that participate in autonomic control. This multiplicity of vestibular-autonomic connections plays a variety of roles. Whereas it has been known for decades that unilateral vestibular lesions can result in motion sickness, recent data suggest that the vestibular system participates in making adjustments in blood pressure and respiration that are necessary to maintain homeostasis during movement and changes in posture. Animals with bilateral vestibular lesions are more susceptible to posturally related hypotension than vest

Effects of N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonists on different measures of motion sickness in cats.

Because N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonists prevent cisplatin-induced emesis and NMDA receptors are in both emetic pathways and structures associated with the final common pathway for vomiting, they have the potential to be broad-spectrum antiemetics. This was evaluated by determining their effects on motion sickness in cats. The measures included the number vomiting, the number of symptom points, which reflect activity early in the final common path and the duration of the retch/vomit sequence, which reflects activity late in the path. Dextrorphan, ketamine and dextromethorphan decreased

Trypanosomes cause dysregulation of c-fos expression in the rat suprachiasmatic nucleus.

Rats infected with the parasite Trypanosoma brucei brucei showed selective changes of c-fos expression in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus (SCN) during spontaneous sleep (S) and wakefulness (W) under a basal 12 h/12 h light-dark (L-D) cycle. In the vast majority of W (D phase) control animals the SCN was devoid of cells displaying Fos-related immunopositivity, while Fos-like-immunoreactive (ir) neurones were detected in most S (L phase) control rats. In most infected animals, on the other hand, Fos-ir neurones were detected in the SCN during W, but not during the S period, with

Determination of acetazolamide in human serum by enzymatic assay.

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitors, such as acetazolamide (AZ), formerly used as diuretics, still play a role in the treatment of glaucoma, epilepsy, and altitude sickness. There is now hard evidence from both in vitro and in vivo studies in animals that carbonic anhydrase plays a vital function in bone loss. Acetazolamide blocks bone resorption in these experimental models. We have postulated that acetazolamide has potential for the treatment of human conditions associated with bone loss. In preparation for a clinical trial of acetazolamide's effectiveness in this regard, we developed an enzy

Tuberculous meningitis in children: a review of 15 cases.

Tuberculosis meningitis (TBM) is the most serious form of infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Between 1968 and 1986 15 children (five boys and 10 girls) were seen at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow, because of TBM. Fourteen children were Caucasian and one was Asian. The mean age at presentation was two years. None had been given BCG vaccination. In 12 children close contact with other cases of tuberculosis was reported. The signs and symptoms which helped in the diagnosis are discussed together with the initial CSF findings, results of mantoux testing and chest X-rays. Thr

Chemoreceptor sensitivity and maladaptation to high altitude in man.

Studies were carried out to find out the role of chemoreceptor sensitivity in the causation of maladaptation syndromes on acute exposure to altitude. The experiments were done in two phases. In phase I, the responses in chemoreceptor sensitivity were studied in altitude acclimatized subjects and compared with those who suffered from either High Altitude Pulmonary Oedema (HAPO) or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). In Phase II, a similar comparison was done in two groups of subjects, one representing normal sojourners at 3,500 m and the other being subjects who had just recovered from HAPO. The fir

V.T.O.B.S.-Learning birth mechanics in virtual reality: a controlled cohort study in undergraduate medical education.

INTRODUCTION: Virtual reality (VR) is increasingly applied in medical education to enhance learning and patient care. Teaching birth mechanics poses particular challenges, as students must understand complex, dynamic, and rotating intrauterine processes that traditional models cannot adequately represent. VR offers immersive, interactive visualization and has shown promise in other fields, but its role in obstetrics remains underexplored. This study evaluated a novel VR module (Virtual Training for Obstetric Birth Simulation, V.T.O.B.S.) for undergraduate obstetrics education. METHODS: In thi

Adrenal Crisis Induced-seizures: A Case Report and Literature Review.

This case report underscores the critical interplay between adrenal crisis and seizure activity, emphasizing the importance of rapid recognition and management of this life-threatening condition. Adrenal crisis, characterized by severe hypotension and electrolyte disturbances, often manifests with nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, and altered consciousness, which can obscure diagnosis, especially in pediatric and young adult populations. The report details a 21-year-old female with a complex endocrinologic background who developed seizures precipitated by an adrenal crisis triggere

Does thyroid function disorder play a vital role in the pathogenesis of neonatal cholestasis?

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal cholestasis is a syndrome characterized by decreased bile flow in infants and has several underlying causes, including genetic and metabolic diseases. Thyroid dysfunction may contribute to the pathophysiology of cholestasis, although it is not often acknowledged as a major cause. Further research into this possible connection is necessary because studies have linked thyroid conditions, including hyperthyroidism and euthyroid sick syndrome, to liver damage in newborns. This study aimed to evaluate the thyroid function in infants with neonatal cholestasis and determine whe

Visceral leishmaniosis in dogs from western Iran.

Leishmania infantum is a sand fly-borne parasite, causing visceral and mucocutaneous leishmaniosis. Dogs are the main reservoir hosts and play a crucial role in the epidemiology of the infection. This study reports for the first time the presence of L. infantum in sick dogs from a western province of Iran, previously considered not endemic for this infection. From April 2024 to June 2025, six mongrel dogs with poor body condition and skin lesions were presented to veterinary clinics in Hamedan, Iran. Impression smears and scrapes of the suspected lesions were examined microscopically for Leish

Heart failure outcomes and Covid-19.

Pre-existing heart failure (HF) in diagnosed patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with a close to two-fold increased mortality rate compared to COVID-19 patients without prior HF history. Moreover, based both on biomarker as well as imaging findings, widespread endothelial and cardiac injury seems to be present in many patients presenting with COVID-19, associated with adverse outcomes including new onset HF. Systematic echocardiographic studies in patients with COVID-19 indicate that the most common cardiac pathology is right ventricular (RV) dilatation (39%) over a

Increasing the capacity to provide compassionate care by expanding knowledge of caring science practices at a pediatric hospital.

BACKGROUND: The emotional aspects of patient care affect care givers' capacity to remain present, safe and caring. As demands increase and capacity decreases care providers are at risk for compassion fatigue (CF). LOCAL PROBLEM: Our organization treats children with complicated diagnoses. Nurses carry a heavy emotional burden due to prolonged exposure to suffering with chronically ill children, ethical dilemmas, and an onus to also care for the parents. METHODS: Our program highlights theory guided practices that honor the complexities of caring for others and creates opportunity for the car

Comparative analysis of the composition and function of fecal-gut bacteria in captive juvenile Crocodylus siamensis between healthy and anorexic individuals.

The Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) is a freshwater, endangered crocodile with high economic value in the farming industry. Gut microflora plays an essential role in host physiological activity, and it contributes significantly to both the health and diseased states of animals. However, thus far, no study has focused on the correlation between diseases and intestinal bacterial communities in crocodilians. Here, we first compared the composition and function of gut microbial communities in captive juvenile C. siamensis suffering from anorexia and healthy crocodile controls using deep a

Effects of vasopressin on neural processing of infant crying in expectant fathers.

In a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled, within-subject magnetic resonance imaging study, we examined the effect of 20 IU intranasal vasopressin on the neural processing of infant crying in 25 fathers-to-be. We explored whether familial background modulates vasopressin effects, and whether vasopressin differentially affects cry processing coupled with neutral or emotional contextual information. Participants listened to cries accompanied by neutral ('this is an infant') or emotional ('this infant is sick/bored') contextual information, and neutral control sounds ('this is a saw'). Ad

Increased Transmissibility of Leishmania donovani From the Mammalian Host to Vector Sand Flies After Multiple Exposures to Sand Fly Bites.

BACKGROUND: Patients with active visceral leishmaniasis are important reservoirs in the anthroponotic transmission cycle of Leishmania donovani. The role of the blood or skin as a source of infection to sand flies remains unclear, and the possible effect of multiple exposures to fly bites on transmissibility has not been addressed. METHODS: L. donovani-infected hamsters underwent xenodiagnoses with Lutzomyia longipalpis on the same or different sites on the abdomen on 2 consecutive days or by artificial feeding on the skin or blood. RESULTS: The transmission of L. donovani from sick hamsters

The end of medical confidentiality? Patients, physicians and the state in history.

Medical confidentiality has come under attack in the public sphere. In recent disasters both journalists and politicians have questioned medical confidentiality and claimed that in specific contexts physicians should be compelled to communicate data on their patients' health. The murders of innocent individuals by a suicidal pilot and a Swiss convicted criminal have generated polemical debates on the topic. In this article, historical data on medical confidentiality is used to show that medical practices of secrecy were regularly attacked in the past, and that the nature of medical confidentia
