Hepatic abscess in sickle cell anaemia: a rare manifestation.

A child with sickle cell anaemia developed a hepatic abscess, which was managed successfully by percutaneous drainage under ultrasound control. A history of attacks of pain dissimilar to usual vaso-occlusive crises should be treated with suspicion and investigated appropriately.

Partial splenectomy in sickle cell syndromes.

Partial splenectomy was carried out in four children with homozygous sickle cell disease and eight children with sickle cell beta thalassaemia. It was performed in order to preserve splenic contribution to the host defence against infections while suppressing hypersplenism or the risk of recurrence of acute splenic sequestration. Indications for this surgical operation were acute splenic sequestration (n = 1), hypersplenism (n = 5), and acute splenic sequestration and hypersplenism (n = 6). Surgery was uneventful in 11 patients. A significant reduction of blood requirements and a significant d

[Frequency of hemoglobin abnormalities and hemoglobinopathies in Mozambique peoples (comparison between leprosy and non-leprosy subjects].

In 588 bloodsamples of negride natives from Moçambique, preferably Chuabo and Macua, haemoglobin analyses were performed. In 21 cases an increase of Hb A2 was found, indicating the presence of heterozygous beta-thalassaemia, in one case the changes in Hb-analysis were typical for beta-delta-thalassaemia, 18 samples could be shown to contain Hb S, typical for the heterozygous sickle cell trait. Futhermore in 7 cases Hb A2' was found. In two bloodsamples haemoglobin variants were observed, which according to their electrophoretical mobility were assumed to represent Hb D in one case, and Hb G in…

Barriers and Facilitators of Premarital Genetic Counseling for Sickle Cell Disease in Northern Nigeria.

In high-income countries, premarital genetic counseling for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a standard practice. However, in Nigeria, there is no formal premarital genetic counseling program available for SCD. We conducted a series of focus group discussions with health care professionals, patients with SCD, and parents of the patients with or without SCD to gain an understanding of their attitudes and beliefs towards SCD/Sickle Cell Trait and premarital genetic counseling for SCD. Data were analyzed using Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory approach. Two themes were highlighted in the analy…

Co-Inheritance of alpha-thalassemia and sickle cell disease in a cohort of Angolan pediatric patients.

The aim of this study was to explore the association between alpha-thalassemia, fetal hemoglobin, hematological indices, and clinical adverse events in Angolan sickle cell disease pediatric patients. A total of 200 sickle cell disease (SCD) children were sampled in Luanda and Caxito. A venous blood sample was collected and used for hematological analyses, fetal hemoglobin quantification, and genotyping of 3.7 kb alpha-thalassemia deletion by GAP-PCR. The frequency of the 3.7 kb alpha-thalassemia deletion in homozygosity was 12.5% and in heterozygosity was 55.0%. An increase in alpha-thalassemi

High prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum Pfmdr1 86Y mutant gene in sickle cell disease in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In areas where malaria is endemic, drug prophylaxis is required for people with sickle cell disease. Chloroquine resistance has been associated with the Plasmodium falciparum multidrug resistance 1 (Pfmdr1) mutant gene. This study tested for the Pfmdr1 86Y mutation in P. falciparum isolates from individuals with sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait, who also underwent hemoglobin genotyping. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from patients presenting with symptoms of malaria in an endemic region. The subjects were screened for hemoglobin genotype using hemoglobi…

Zinc, copper and iron and their interrelations in the growth of sickle cell patients.

In this study we evaluated the nutritional status of 34 children with sickle cell disease (SS). Results were compared to 9 siblings with sickle cell trait (AS) and 35 eutrophic children who presented normal hemoglobin and normal hemoglobin electrophoresis (AA). All of then came from low socioeconomic level. Analysis of the growth velocity curves revealed in SS group, tendency to increase deficit in weight and height with age. There was no relation between weight/height (W/H) and height/age (H/A) percentile and hemoglobin levels. There was no significant relation between nutritional status and …

Neonatal Screening and the Clinical Outcome in Children with Sickle Cell Disease in Central India.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a major health burden in India. The objective of the study was to establish a neonatal screening program and to understand the clinical course of children with SCD in central India. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Pregnant mothers were screened for sickle hemoglobin using the solubility test. Babies were screened by high performance liquid chromatography if the mother was positive for sickle hemoglobin. The diagnosis was confirmed by molecular analysis. They received early prophylactic treatment and vaccination. Of 2134 newborns screened, 104 were sickle homozyg

Analysis of clinical presentation, hematological factors, self-reported bed net usage, and malaria burden in sickle cell disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a severe monogenic disorder, caused by single nucleotide mutations in the hemoglobin (Hb) gene, that is prevalent in malaria endemic regions of the world. Sickle cell trait (SCT) individuals carry only one of the mutated alleles and were shown to be protected against malaria. However, defining the relative contribution of hematological, clinical, and environmental factors to the overall burden of malaria in individuals with hemoglobinopathies such as SCA has been challenging. METHODS: We hypothesized that hematological differences, clinical presentation…

Clinical features of sickle cell anaemia in northern nigerian children.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a more common and severe disease in Africa. Nigeria the most populous black nation in Africa has the largest number of sickle cell anaemia (SCA) patients in the world. Borno and Yobe State has the largest number of sickle cell trait in Nigeria with prevalence of 27.9% and 32.6% respectively. Sickle cell anaemia survival to adulthood in Africa was reported to be 10-15% in the first decade of life, with the death rate of about 5% during subsequent decades. Large portion that died have shown no overt chronic organ failure but died during acute episodes of …

[Epidemiology of genetic hemoglobin diseases in metropolitan France].

The number of subjects with heterozygous beta-thalassaemia and sickle-cell anaemia in metropolitan France can be evaluated by the distribution of populations originating from countries with a high prevalence of genetic haemoglobinopathies. Taking into account the movements of these populations observed since the 1982 census, the current prevalences of beta-thalassaemic and drepanocytic traits are higher than the figures of 180,000 and 130,000 respectively found at that date. On the other hand, it appears from episodic screenings performed during the last few years that the percentage of subjec

Suicide for survival--death of infected erythrocytes as a host mechanism to survive malaria.

The pathogen of malaria, Plasmodium, enters erythrocytes and thus escapes recognition by the immune system. The pathogen induces oxidative stress to the host erythrocyte, which triggers eryptosis, the suicidal death of erythrocytes. Eryptosis is characterized by cell shrinkage, membrane blebbing and cell membrane phospholipid scrambling with phosphatidylserine exposure at the cell surface. Phosphatidylserine-exposing erythrocytes are identified by macrophages which engulf and degrade the eryptotic cells. To the extent that infected erythrocytes undergo eryptosis prior to exit of Plasmodiaand s
