Survivability in patients with rare sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma variants: exploring the influence of rural-urban continuum codes and social determinants of health in the USA.

PURPOSE: This study examined survival outcomes in patients with rare sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma, excluding rectal cancer, with a focus on the combined effects of rural-urban continuum code (RUCC) and median household income (MHI). METHODS: We analyzed the SEER dataset, which includes 93,020 patients diagnosed with this condition. Survival differences were assessed using Kaplan-Meier estimates and multivariable Cox models. Interaction effects between RUCC and MHI were evaluated, and a nomogram was developed to predict five- and 10-year survival probabilities after adjusting for covariates, w

Competitive Risk Analysis of Prognosis in Older Adults with Sigmoid Colon Adenocarcinoma: A Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to employ a competing risk model based on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to identify prognostic factors for elderly individuals with sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma (SCA) and compare them with the classic Cox proportional hazards model. METHODS: We extracted data from elderly patients diagnosed with SCA registered in the SEER database between 2010 and 2015. Univariate analysis was conducted using cumulative incidence functions and Gray's test, while multivariate analysis was performed using both the Fine-Gray and Cox propo

Aortic Thrombosis in a Patient With Malignant Disease: A Literature Review and Case Presentation.

INTRODUCTION:: Aortic mural thrombosis associated with a malignant disease is rare, and whether anticoagulation therapy or surgical treatment is the more definitive primary treatment remains uncertain. This study aims to determine the best treatment strategy for aortic thrombosis in a patient with a malignant disease. METHODS:: We reviewed medical literature using the PubMed database and present a case of aortic thrombosis due to a hypercoagulable state related to sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma. RESULTS:: Of the 18 patients from 14 articles included in this study, 13 received simple anticoagul

A case of kaposiform hemangioendothelioma at the sigmoid colon.

We report a case of kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) occurring at the sigmoid colon in an 8-year-old male. He had experienced lower abdominal pain and fever for several days. Contrast-enhanced CT images revealed a well-enhanced mass involving several large and small cystic parts with thin, enhanced walls at the sigmoid colon. The diagnosis was made histopathologically after surgical resection; the cystic parts corresponded to dilated lymphatic vessels. KHE is a rare, locally aggressive, vascular tumor that usually occurs in the soft tissues of the extremities. However, a case occurring in

Safety and efficacy of single-port colectomy for sigmoid colon cancer: a phase II clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Recently, single-port surgery for colon cancer has been increasingly attempted. However, prospective studies investigating the efficacy of single-port colectomy for colon cancer are lacking. The aim of this study is to determine whether single-port colectomy for sigmoid colon cancer is a safe and effective surgical option. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Forty-eight patients were enrolled for this prospective single-arm Phase II trial. All patients underwent single-port laparoscopic-assisted sigmoidectomy through the umbilicus. The primary outcome was the number of retrieved lymph nodes. Se

Left-sided duplication of inferior vena cava: clinical implications in a patient with sigmoid adenocarcinoma.

Double inferior vena cava is a rare congenital anomaly, usually detected by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Although asymptomatic, it may have a clinical significance, as it may mimic a para-aortic lymphadenopaty. A case of left-sided duplication of the inferior vena cava in a patient with sigmoid colon cancer is presented. The diagnostic pitfalls and clinical implications are discussed. Accurate preoperative assessment of such an anatomical variant is of utmost importance, this way potentially life-threatening surgical complications, particularly when a minimally invasive a

Excavated mass and doubletracking in the sigmoid colon due to colocolic fistula complicating diverticulitis.

We report on a patient admitted for work up of prostatic carcinoma in which CT study showed an excavated mass involving the sigmoid colon and the bladder dome. Barium enema showed a double track pattern associated with diverticular disease. By surgery the mass was separated from the urinary bladder and the sigmoid resected. On pathological exam diverticulitis was evident as well as an organised colocolic fistula in the thickened fibrotic subserosal fat.The usefulness of opacifying the colon is highlighted.

[A case of colon cancer with reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome following 5-FU and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX regime)].

We report a rare case of reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS) induced by 5-FU and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX regime). A 35-year-old woman with ileus was diagnosed with sigmoid cancer Stage IV (T4N4M0P2H0), and excision of the sigmoid colon, and left ureteroureteral anastomosis was performed. Postoperative chemotherapy with FOLFOX4 was performed. Complications of hypertension were seen on day 6, and convulsions on day 11 after chemotherapy. Headache and visual disturbance were also complications. MRI of the brain revealed bilateral high signal intensities of posterior lobes on T2 w

[A case of sigmoid colon cancer in a patient undergoing hemodialysis treated by tegafur/uracil/folinate].

The patient was a 59-year-old man who had undergone hemodialysis because of chronic renal failure. The patient was diagnosed as colonic perforation due to stricture of sigmoid colon cancer, and sigmoidectomy was performed. Since colonic perforation and imperfect lymphnode dissection might increase the risk of recurrence, the patient underwent 6 courses of tegafur/uracil/folinate(UFT/LV)chemotherapy. No adverse events occurred in the course of chemotherapy. UFT/LV chemotherapy may be administered safely with careful management even for a patient on hemodialysis.

Late Streptococcus bovis infection of knee arthroplasty and its association with carcinoma of the colon: a case report.

Streptococcus bovis is a very rare cause of infection of joint arthroplasty. Infections with S. bovis have been reported to be associated with various gastrointestinal conditions. We present a case of total knee arthroplasty infected with S. bovis 40 months after a successful knee replacement. The diagnosis was established on joint fluid as well as blood cultures. Early diagnosis, arthroscopic wash out and appropriate antibiotics helped salvage the prosthesis. Early colonoscopy revealed carcinoma of the sigmoid colon that was surgically resected.

[Prevalence of adenomas and carcinomas of the colon. Results of the rectosigmoid exam].

UNLABELLED: Colon adenomas are precursors for colon carcinoma. Their prevalence has been estimated at 20-30% in the general population and 40-60% in developed countries. They are classified as tubular, villous; or mixed, and as low- or high-risk lesions, which have any of the following characteristics: Being larger than 1 cm; having a villous component, or showing moderate to severe dysplasia. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the results of a series of colonoscopies, carried out from 1993 to 1999 in a private hospital in Mexico City, with regard to the following: Prevalence of colon adenomas and carcino

[Laparoscopic sigmoid resection].

Laparoscopic appendectomy and cholecystectomy have become routine operations in many hospitals by now. The high acceptance among patients and surgeons together with the development of performing laparoscopic instruments made the laparoscopic approach of colon resections possible. The technique of laparoscopic resection of the sigmoid colon is described. By a surgeon possessing experience in laparoscopic surgery, it can be done without problems. The advantage for the patient lies in less postoperative pain and a shorter hospital stay, but the method still needs to be perfectionated and tested b

Mucosal proliferation characteristics in ureterosigmoidostomy: effect of calcium supplement.

Ureterosigmoidostomy, frequently performed in children for urinary diversion, is a known premalignant condition. Dietary calcium supplements have been shown to normalize mucosal proliferative patterns in other human premalignant colonic conditions, which might decrease the risk of cancer. However, calcium supplementation has not been investigated in ureterosigmoidostomy. We used a rat model to study the effects of increased dietary calcium on the progression to carcinoma in ureterosigmoidostomy. Twenty-five Wister rats underwent ureterosigmoidostomy by anastomosis of bladder trigone and ureter

An unusual case of delayed rectosigmoid compression by pelvic mass following cystectomy: report of a case.

A rare case of rectosigmoid compression by an enormous obscure pelvic mass after cystectomy is reported. Pelvic collections in the form of abscess, hematoma, lymphocele, and urinoma are not uncommon in the early postoperative period following pelvic surgery. However, delayed appearance of a benign pelvic mass as a late complication of surgery is very rare. Localized pelvic masses discovered years after cystectomy for bladder tumor may lead to an erroneous clinical impression of local recurrence of the primary neoplasm. Differential diagnosis of common pelvic masses, diagnostic studies, and tre
