Paradoxical associations between soil-transmitted helminths and Plasmodium falciparum infection.

Evidence on the comorbidity between soil-transmitted helminth infections and malaria is scarce and divergent. This study explored the interactions between soil-transmitted helminth infections and uncomplicated falciparum malaria in an endemic area of Colombia. A paired case-control study matched by sex, age and location in Tierralta, Cordoba, was done between January and September 2010. The incident cases were 68 patients with falciparum malaria and 178 asymptomatic controls. A questionnaire was used to gather information on sociodemographic variables. Additionally physical examinations were c

Improved healing rates for chronic venous leg ulcers: pilot study results from a randomized controlled trial of a community nursing intervention.

Venous leg ulcers are a frequent source of chronic ill-health and a considerable cost to health-care systems. This paper reports pilot study results from a randomized controlled trial to determine the effectiveness of a community-based 'Leg Club' environment on improving healing rates of venous leg ulcers. Leg Clubs offer a setting where people with similar problems can socialize in a supportive, information-sharing environment. A sample of 33 clients with a below-knee venous leg ulcer were randomized to treatment, either in their own homes or in a community Leg Club. Treatment was provided to

Caregiver social networks and discontinued support during COVID-19: a multilevel dyadic analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Family caregivers provide essential support to older adults, but their extended caregiving networks can be strained during crises. This study examines which characteristics of caregivers' personal networks were associated with discontinued support during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period of widespread social disruption. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Care Network Connections over Time study, a longitudinal, nationally representative study of U.S. caregivers. Respondents (N = 2,116) reported on support before and during COVID-19. Multilevel logistic regression

Linking interpersonal childhood adversity to mental health: A scoping review of trust, mentalizing, agency and interpersonal emotion regulation as candidate social-transactional mechanisms.

OBJECTIVES: The neurocognitive social-transactional model posits that interpersonal adversity during childhood heightens risk for mental health difficulties by altering how individuals engage with their social world. We conducted a scoping review to map current evidence for four candidate mechanisms, Trust, Mentalizing, Agency and Interpersonal Emotion Regulation (IER), linking interpersonal childhood adversity to mental health outcomes. METHODS: We followed PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews and preregistered the protocol at https://osf.io/rt7cy. Through systematic searches, we identified

The role of training on smallholder farmers' adoption of orange-fleshed sweet potato in Ethiopia.

Biofortified orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) offers a viable strategy for combating vitamin A deficiency in Sub-Saharan Africa. Despite its nutritional benefits, its adoption among Ethiopian smallholder farmers remains limited. This study investigated the role of training in driving OFSP adoption, using a qualitative experiment grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Technology Acceptance Model. A total of 65 Ethiopian sweet potato farmers were interviewed before and after training, of which 33 were trained (17 adopters and 16 non-adopters). The findings highlight that training s

"I just don't know what will be better other than an apartment which I can't afford": Experiences of housing quality following homelessness in Ontario, Canada.

Having access to good quality housing is a key determinant of well-being. Little is known about experiences of housing quality following homelessness from the perspectives of persons with lived experience. To build on existing literature, we conducted a secondary analysis of qualitative interviews with 19 individuals who had experiences of transitioning to housing following homelessness. Interview transcripts were drawn from a community-based participatory research study exploring the conditions needed for thriving following homelessness in Ontario, Canada. We analyzed these transcripts using

Understanding posterior drooling in children and young people with neurodevelopmental disabilities: a parental perspective.

BACKGROUND: Saliva control problems in children and young people with neurodevelopmental disabilities are classified as anterior drooling (i.e. loss of saliva from the mouth) and posterior drooling (i.e. saliva spillage into the oropharynx). Posterior drooling poses serious health risks, but is often missed or misinterpreted. This study explored how parents perceive its symptoms and impact on daily life. METHODS: Semi-structured focus group discussions were conducted with parents of children with posterior drooling, directed toward observable signs and impact on children as well as family. Se

Europeans' willingness to pay for ending homelessness: A contingent valuation study.

The purpose of this study is to assess the utility value European citizens put on an innovative social program aimed at reducing homelessness. The Housing First (HF) model involves access to regular, scattered, independent and integrated housing in the community with the support of a multidisciplinary team. Currently, HF is not implemented by most European countries or funded by healthcare or social plans, but randomised controlled trials have stressed significant results for improved housing stability, recovery and healthcare services use. The broader implementation of HF across Europe would

Racial disparities in olfactory loss among older adults in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Age-related olfactory loss (presbyosmia) substantially decreases quality of life, presages neurodegenerative disease, impairs nutrition, and predicts mortality. We sought to determine how race is associated with olfactory loss in older American adults in order to inform both health care and policy. METHODS: The National Social Life, Health and Aging Project interviewed a cross-sectional nationally representative probability sample of older adults in the United States. African Americans and Hispanics were oversampled, providing power to detect disparities for these subgroups. As pa

A three generation study of the mental health relationships between grandparents, parents and children.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that children of parents with mental illness are at greater risk of mental illness themselves. However the patterns of familial mental health problems across multiple generations in families are less clear. This study aimed to examine mental health relationships across three generations of Australian families. METHODS: Mental health data, along with a range of family demographic information, were collected from over 4600 families in Growing Up in Australia: The Longitudinal Study of Australian Children, a nationally representative cohort study.
