Density-dependence in worm establishment, numbers, biomass and larval production were examined in primary infections of 0, 10, 40, 80 and 160 larvae of the lung nematode, Rhabdias bufonis in the common toad, Bufo bufo. The infection procedure established 4 non-overlapping levels of infection which persisted until 6 weeks post-infection (p.i.), after which there was an overall decline up to 12 weeks p.i. Worm numbers had no direct effect on adult worm survival but temporal changes in worm weight were density-dependent. Adult worm establishment in the lungs declined significantly as the numbers

Okinawa Prefecture is an endemic area of Strongyloides stercoralis infection. Since treatment of this infection remains unsatisfactory, we evaluated the efficacy of ivermectin. Twenty-three patients were treated with a single oral dose of ivermectin (mean +/- SD, 105.5 +/- 20.8 mcg/kg of body weight), followed by a second dose two weeks later. The rate of cure was 85.7% at 2 weeks after the first treatment, and 90.5% at 2 weeks after the second treatment. Side effects occurred in 2 patients (8.7%), but they were mild and transient. The results indicate that ivermectin might be useful and relat

The initial pathway of skin penetrating larvae of Strongyloides ratti inside the host is not systemic and could well involve local components of the lymphatic system. The experiments described were an attempt to detect an effect on immunity depending on whether larvae of a challenge infection were committed to a pathway through heavily primed or lightly primed lymph nodes. Female rats were immunised by subcutaneous injection into the right forearm of 10,000 [corrected] heat killed, or 1000 live, third stage larvae of S. ratti. Animals given living parasites were placed on a diet containing 0.1

A 30-year-old man returning from a trip through India complained of epigastric pain, diarrhea, loss of weight, and jaundice. Stool examination was positive for Strongyloides stercoralis. On ultrasonographic investigation, intravenous cholangiography, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography, stenosis of the distal common bile duct and enlargement of the pancreatic head were observed. The patient was treated for the Strongyloides infection. The jaundice disappeared within days, the laboratory finding normalized, and the patient recovered rapidly. However, the ultrasonographic examin
