The work is concerned with studying the effect exerted by different sources of nitrogen nutrition on the biosynthesis of proteinases with a thrombolytic activity by a variant of Bacillus mesentericus, strain 64, obtained with the aid of analytical selection. Semen qualities were studied in workers with an average age of 30 years and occupationally exposed to lead in a printing press. Another sample with the same average age but not exposed to lead were taken as control subjects. Blood glutathione-peroxidase (GSH-Px) was determined in 61 healthy subjects and 506 patients with various skin disorders. The succinate dehydrogenase method of staining and the determination of the K+/Na+ ratio of heart tissue have been applied to forensic material as a tool for demonstrating early signs of myocardial infarctions. Both methods are controlled by a series of forensic cases dying from causes other than arteriosclerosis of the coronary arteries. In 28 patients with fulminant hepatic failure alkalaemia was present in 49 of a total of 65 observations. Alkalaemia was due primarlily to a low Pa, C02 in 30 instances and to raised plasma bicarbonate in 16 instances. The inhibitory effect of cationic proteins from rabbit polymorphonuclear leucocytes on the oxidation of NADH by staphylococcal membrane preparations is described.
