Use of a vessel sealant device for splenectomy in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To (1) describe a technique for splenic vessel hemostasis and (2) report complications and outcome after use of bipolar sealant device during splenectomy in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Case series. ANIMALS: Dogs (n=27) with naturally occurring splenic disease. METHODS: Between January 2006 and March 2008, splenectomy was performed using a vessel sealant device in 27 dogs with naturally occurring splenic disease. Number of sutures needed for splenectomy and complications were recorded. Splenic artery diameter was measured using a caliper. Intraoperative hemostasis, device ease of use, pos

Exercising videoendoscopic evaluation of 45 horses with respiratory noise and/or poor performance after laryngoplasty.

OBJECTIVE: To (1) assess upper airway function by videoendoscopy in horses performing poorly after laryngoplasty and (2) establish whether dynamic collapse of the left arytenoid can be predicted by the degree of resting postsurgical abduction. STUDY DESIGN: Case series. ANIMALS: Horses that had left laryngoplasty (n=45). METHODS: Medical records (June 1993-December 2007) of horses evaluated for abnormal respiratory noise and/or poor performance after laryngoplasty were reviewed. Laparoscopic cystotomy for removal of a large bladder polyp in a juvenile alpaca with polypoid cystitis.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a method for laparoscopic cystotomy in an alpaca. STUDY DESIGN: Case report. ANIMALS: Female alpaca. METHODS: An 8-month-old female alpaca was admitted with a 6-week history of straining to urinate and vulvar swelling. Transrectal ultrasound examination revealed a 1.5 x 1.5 x 2 cm polyp within the bladder. RESULTS: The mass was excised using laparoscopic cystotomy. Leakage from the cystotomy site resolved over 12 days using a Foley catheter. The alpaca was healthy and urinating normally at 9 months after surgery. CONCLUSION: Minimally invasive surgery by laparoscopi

ANIMAL: A 7-year-old, Swedish Warmblood mare with urinary incontinence. METHODS: The urethral sphincter, which had been damaged during removal of a cystic urolith, was repaired by apposing the ends of the disrupted urethralis muscle and tunica muscularis. RESULTS: The mare was no longer incontinent after repair of the defect by apposition of the ends of the urethralis muscle and tunica muscularis. CONCLUSIONS: Tran

Laparoscopic removal of a large abdominal testicular teratoma in a standing horse.

OBJECTIVE: To describe laparoscopic removal of a large testicular teratoma in a standing horse. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical report. ANIMALS: Thoroughbred horse (11 months) with a testicular teratoma. METHODS: A unilateral cryptorchid testicle could not be removed by an inguinal approach under general anesthesia because of it s large size. After recovery from general anesthesia, ultrasound evaluation revealed a 24 x 19 cm fluid-filled testicular mass. The mass was removed by paralumbar fossa laparoscopy with the horse in a standing position. After fluid aspiration of the mass, the mesorchium and

Determination of the mechanical medial proximal tibial angle using a tangential radiographic technique.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether there is a difference in the mechanical medial proximal tibial angle (mMPTA) measured on a tangential caudocranial (tCdCr) radiographic projection versus a straight caudocranial (sCdCr) projection before and after inducing a varus deformity in the proximal tibia. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Cadaveric canine tibiae (n=4 pair). METHODS: For each tibia, a mediolateral radiographic projection was performed and the tibial plateau angle was measured. sCdCr and tCdCr radiographic projections were obtained and the mMPTA measured. A varus deformity w
