Thoracoscopic sympathetic clipping for hyperhidrosis: long-term results and reversibility.

OBJECTIVE: The study objectives were to assess 1) postoperative satisfaction and the occurrence of compensatory sweating after endoscopic thoracic sympathetic clipping in a consecutive series of patients and 2) the reversibility of adverse effects by removing the surgical clips. METHODS: Between June 1998 and March 2006, 727 patients undergoing bilateral endoscopic thoracic sympathetic clipping for hyperhidrosis or facial blushing were prospectively followed for postoperative satisfaction and subjective compensatory sweating. The effect of removing the surgical clips was assessed in 34 patien

The role of circulating catecholamines in the depletion of parotid acinar granules in conscious rats in the cold.

The possibility that circulating catecholamines might affect parotid gland function during feeding (over a period of 80 min) and cold stress … assessment, the parasympathetic auriculotemporal nerve was cut on one side in addition to bilateral sympathectomy and, as a further precaution, the animal was atropinized. It was then found that there was a loss of 17% of granules in the parasympathectomized plus sympathectomized gland, but not the contralateral gland, of non-fed cold-exposed rats compared with …

Autonomic modulation of insulin levels in foetal sheep.

The autonomic nervous system plays an important part in metabolic and circulatory adaptation of the foetus to changes in its intrauterine environment and after delivery. Foetal and neonatal glucose metabolism and insulin secretion are influenced by changes in humoral catecholamine levels as they may occur during asphyxia. To assess the role of neuronal and humoral sympathetic activity in foetal endocrine pancreatic regulation, chronically catheterized foetal sheep near term were chemically sympathectomized with 6-hydroxydopamine. Experiments were carried out in unanaesthetized foetal sheep in

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy. A review.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is a syndrome of burning pain, hyperesthesia, swelling, hyperhidrosis, and trophic changes in the skin and bone of the affected extremity. It is precipitated by a wide variety of factors in addition to nerve injury. It occurs outside of dermatomal distributions and can spread to involve other extremities without new injury. The diagnosis is primarily clinical, but roentgenography, scintigraphy, and sympathetic blockade can help to confirm the diagnosis. The most successful therapies are directed toward blocking the sympathetic innervation to the affected extremity,

The effect of stellatectomy on gastric acid secretion in the dog.

The stellate ganglion is the major contributor of adrenergic fibers to the vagus nerve and stellatectomy causes a degeneration of vagal adrenergic fibers. The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of stellatectomy on gastric acid secretion (GAS) and gastrin levels in the dog. GAS in response to pentagastrin stimulation was measured in six gastric fistula dogs before and after stellatectomy. Likewise, blood was collected for basal and meat meal-stimulated serum gastrin levels before and after stellatectomy. After bilateral stellatectomy acid secretion increased in response to su

Mechanisms of increase in amylase activity in rat submandibular and sublingual glands after administration of pilocarpine.

The increase in parotid rather than pancreatic-type amylase activity in the submandibular and sublingual glands of rats caused by administration of pilocarpine was abolished or diminished when pilocarpine was injected into rats which had been parotidectomized, sympathectomized by superior cervical ganglionectomy or pretreated with reserpine. These results suggest that the increases in amylase activity in the submandibular and sublingual glands by pilocarpine are not due to increase in enzyme synthesis, but to uptake of enzyme released into the blood in large quantities from the parotid gland a

Target delineation workflow and outcomes of stereotactic cardiac radioablation.

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is an emerging modality for the treatment of ventricular tachycardia (VT). The workfl … . VT management prior to SBRT consideration included ≥2 catheter ablations in 22 (88%) and surgical sympathectomy in 7 patients (28%). Of the 27 performed cases, SBRT target delineation incorporated electrocardiogram of clinical VT in 16 (59%), at least 2 noninvasive imaging modalities to assess scar in 24 (89%), and invasive electroanatomic mapping in 25 (93%) …

National Cross-Sectional Epidemiological Analysis of the Impact of Pandemic COVID-19 on Vascular Procedures in Public Health System: 521,069 Procedures Over 4 Years.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a dramatic increase in healthcare demand. Resources were redirected to care patients with COVID-19. Therefore, surgical treatments were affected, including those of vascular diseases. There are no studies evaluating the whole impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, considering all types of vascular procedures, both elective and urgent, in a large country. The aim of the present study was to analyze the impact on all types of vascular procedures performed in Brazilian public hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Cross-sectional population

Expression of acetylcholine and its receptor in human sympathetic ganglia in primary hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiologic characteristics of primary hyperhidrosis are not well understood and seem to be related to a sympathetic nervous system dysfunction. The resection of thoracic sympathetic chain ganglia is the most effective treatment for hyperhidrosis; however sympathetic ganglia function in normal individuals and in patients with hyperhidrosis is unknown. METHODS: A cross-sectional study, in which 2 groups of 20 subjects were analyzed: the hyperhidrosis group (HYP), comprised of patients with hyperhidrosis who were eligible for thoracic sympathectomy, and the control group (C…

Role of neuron density of the stellate ganglion on regulation of the basilar artery volume in subarachnoid hemorrhage: An experimental study.

The beneficial effect of sympathectomy for the prevention of cerebral vasospasm may be explained through this mechanism.

[Surgical treatment of cervical rib syndrome].

The authors report herein the results of examination and surgical management of fifty-one patients presenting with cervical ribs. Of these, … ia. Decompression operations were carried out in fifty-one patients, with selective thoracocervical sympathectomy performed in twelve. For treating rudimentary cervical rib, we worked out a combined method of an operative intervention. Analysing the obtained surgical outcomes showed the following: forty-four patients (86.3%) endured the operation with no compli …

Minimal access mediastinal surgery: One or two lung ventilation?

BACKGROUND: Minimal access mediastinal surgery (MAMS) is usually performed under general anaesthesia with double lumen tubes (DLT). The aim of this study is to evaluate two lung ventilation through single lumen tubes (SLT) during thoracoscopic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis and thoracoscopic thymectomy for myasthenia gravis. METHODS: In this prospective non-randomized study, MAMS was performed in 58 patients with hyperhidrosis and 42 patients with myasthenia gravis, from January 2002 to December 2008. Patients were intubated with a DLT or SLT, 50 patients in each group. In the DLT group, end…

Spinal cord stimulation for chronic visceral pain secondary to chronic non-alcoholic pancreatitis.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) suppresses visceral response to colon distension in an animal model. In humans, it may be an effective therapy for chronic pain of pelvic origin, irritable bowel syndrome, and persistent unspecified abdominal pain. Described here is the case of SCS for 38-year-old woman with visceral pain secondary to chronic pancreatitis. Previous therapies included numerous endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographies, multiple pancreatic duct stenting, chemical and surgical sympathectomies with short-lasting pain relief. After the initial evaluation, the patient underwent r
