Comparison of perceived symptoms of patients undergoing bone marrow transplant and the nurses caring for them.

This study describes the symptomatology of patients hospitalized for bone marrow transplant (BMT) (n = 30) and compares their perceptions of these symptoms to those of nurses (n = 28). Patients and nurses responded to the Symptom Distress Scale (SDS) four times: within 48 hours of BMT day one (T1); day 7-10 post-BMT (T2); day 20-23 post-BMT (T3); and day 30-34 post-BMT (T4). Patients also completed the Profile of Mood States at T1. Each time, the investigators completed a Karnofsky Performance Status evaluation of each patient. Patients perceived significantly more distress from their symptoms

Follow-up study of dental students' esthetic perceptions of mild dental fluorosis.

OBJECTIVES: Several studies have assessed people's esthetic perceptions of dental fluorosis, suggesting that concerns may be greater than believed previously. Few studies have assessed dental students' perceptions and none has done so over time. The purpose of this paper is to report on changes in dental students' esthetic perceptions of dental fluorosis and other conditions. METHODS: Fourth-year dental students (n=45) completed questionnaires about computer-generated photographs of fluorosis and other conditions, using the same protocol as when they were entering dental students. Results wer

Temporal-occipital glioblastoma presenting with Alice in Wonderland Syndrome in a patient with a long-time history of migraine without aura.

Alice in Wonderland Syndrome (AIWS) is a rare perceptual disorder characterized by an erroneous perception of the body or the surrounding space. AIWS may be caused by different pathologies, ranging from infections to migraine. We present the case of a 54-year-old man, with a long-time history of migraine without aura, diagnosed with AIWS due to a glioblastoma located in the left temporal-occipital junction. To date, this is the first case of AIWS caused by glioblastoma. This case suggests that to exclude aura-mimic phenomena, a careful diagnostic workup should always be performed even in patie

Development of perceptual expertise in emotion recognition.

How do children's early social experiences influence their perception of emotion-specific information communicated by the face? To examine this question, we tested a group of abused children who had been exposed to extremely high levels of parental anger expression and physical threat. Children were presented with arrays of stimuli that depicted the unfolding of facial expressions, from neutrality to peak emotions. The abused children accurately recognized anger early in the formation of the facial expression, when few physiological cues were available. The speed of children's recognition was

Bilateral angle closure glaucoma and visual loss precipitated by antidepressant and antianxiety agents in a patient with depression.

A 71-year-old woman with depression had been treated with an antidepressant (maprotiline) and antianxiety agents (clotiazepam and alprazolam). She had previously complained of ocular pain and blurred vision. However, thorough ocular examination was not performed at those times. On examination, visual acuity was no light perception OD and hand motion OS. Intraocular pressures were 33 mm Hg OU. Moderately dilated pupils, atrophic irises, shallow anterior chambers and closed angles were seen in both eyes. Despite treatment, her visual acuity decreased to no light perception bilaterally. The /O/ in OVER is different from the /O/ in OTTER: phonological effects in children with and without dyslexia.

First-letter naming was used to investigate the role of phonology in printed word perception in children with and without dyslexia. In 2 experiments, all children showed faster first-letter-naming times in a congruent condition than in an incongruent condition, which suggests that phonology is a fundamental constraint in the printed word perception of readers of all levels and all skills. An explanation in terms of a recurrent network put forward by G. C. Van Orden and S. D. Goldinger (1996) is discussed to account for the apparent paradox in the reading behavior of readers with dyslexia, that

What does "Timely" Mean to Residents? Challenging Feedback Assumptions in Postgraduate Education.

INTRODUCTION: Current orthodoxy states that feedback should be timely and face-to-face, yet the optimal timing and mode of delivery for feedback is unclear. We explored what "optimal timing" means from residents' points of view as feedback providers and receivers, to ultimately inform strategies to optimize feedback in training. METHODS: As near-peers who have dual roles in both providing and receiving feedback, 16 subspecialty (PGY4 and 5) internal medicine residents were interviewed about their perceptions of the optimal timing and format of feedback. Using constructivist grounded theory, i

Perceived Utility of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in People With Bowel Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective but underutilized treatment for bowel disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). We aimed to examine attitudes and perceptions toward CBT in adults with and without bowel DGBI or other gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. METHODS: We conducted an online survey on perceptions and experiences related to CBT. Presence of bowel DGBI was determined using Rome IV criteria. Responses were compared across individuals with bowel DGBI, other GI diseases, and controls, and between individuals with different types of bowel DGBI including

Perceptions of Symptom Duration are Associated With Emotional Distress and Functioning in Adolescents With Protracted Concussion Recovery.

UNLABELLED: Adolescents with persisting post-concussive symptoms often report high levels of emotional distress, which can impact their daily functioning. The associations between modifiable factors, such as perceptions of recovery, and emotional distress have not been investigated in this age group. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate perceptions about recovery duration (e.g., "my symptoms will last a long time", "my symptoms will be permanent rather than temporary") and its associations with emotional distress and functioning in children and adolescents with a slower post-concussive recovery. METHODS:

Dynamics in public perceptions and media coverage during an ongoing outbreak of meningococcal W disease in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: From 2015 to 2018, the Netherlands faced an outbreak of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) caused by serogroup W. To counter the rise in infections, the government introduced a catch-up menACWY vaccination campaign for teenagers in 2018 and 2019. The outbreak situation induced substantial media attention and a run on menACWY vaccines outside the vaccination campaign. This study aimed to gain insights into the dynamics of public perceptions of and responses to the outbreak and the menACWY vaccination, and into the media coverage about the outbreak. METHODS: Three repeated surveys

Perceptual decisions about object shape bias visuomotor coordination during rapid interception movements.

Visual processing in parietal areas of the dorsal stream facilitates sensorimotor transformations for rapid movement. This action-related visual processing is hypothesized to play a distinct functional role from perception-related processing in the ventral stream. However, it is unclear how the two streams interact when perceptual identification is a prerequisite to executing an accurate movement. In the current study, we investigated how perceptual decision-making involving the ventral stream influences arm and eye movement strategies. Participants (n = 26) moved a robotic manipulandum using

Whose fault is it? Attribution of causes of patient violence among exposed and unexposed community-based family physicians.

Extensive research has dealt with violence directed at healthcare workers in hospital settings; however, few studies have examined community-based settings. Furthermore, there is also scant literature regarding the perceptions of healthcare providers who were exposed to violence, compared to those who were not. This study aims to narrow these gaps in the literature by examining community-based family physicians' (CBFPs) perceptions in a large national Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) regarding patient-initiated violence. Using a voluntary online survey, directed at all CBFPs working at th

The Associations of Hearing Sensitivity and Different Cognitive Functions with Perception of Speech-in-Noise.

OBJECTIVES: Impaired speech-in-noise perception affects individuals' daily lives and is a frequent symptom of age-related hearing loss, which is a common disabling condition and a health concern in aging populations. The relative impact of hearing sensitivity loss and different cognitive functions on speech-in-noise perception is not well understood. We aimed to assess to what extent hearing sensitivity and different cognitive functions were associated with sentence-in-noise performance across the adult lifespan. DESIGN: This study is based on data of 2585 participants of the Rhineland Study,

Assessing Relationships Between Patient and Caregiver Reported Outcome Measures of Dysphagia in Parkinson Disease: A Retrospective Study.

Parkinson disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases worldwide with dysphagia being a common sequela of PD. Individuals with Parkinson disease (IwPD) and dysphagia and their caregivers may have differing perceptions of the adverse effects of dysphagia on daily living. Assessing how IwPD and their caregivers perceive dysphagia has the potential to contribute to clinical knowledge of the health status of IwPD, broaden insight into swallowing therapy progress, influence swallowing treatment recommendations and improve long term swallowing outcomes for IwPD. In this retrospe

Pitch perception is more robust to interference and better resolved when provided by pulse rate than by modulation frequency of cochlear implant stimulation.

Cochlear implants are medical devices that have been used to restore hearing to more than half a million people worldwide. Most recipients achieve high levels of speech comprehension through these devices, but speech comprehension in background noise and music appreciation in general are markedly poor compared to normal hearing. A key aspect of hearing that is notably diminished in cochlear implant outcomes is the sense of pitch provided by these devices. Pitch perception is an important factor affecting speech comprehension in background noise and is critical for music perception. The present

Using the common sense model to understand perceived cancer risk in individuals testing for BRCA1/2 mutations.

The common sense model posits that individuals' understanding of illness is based upon somatic symptoms and life experiences and thus may differ significantly from the biomedical view of illness. The current study used the common sense model to understand cancer risk perceptions in 99 individuals testing for BRCA1/2 mutations. Specifically, we examined change from post-counseling to post-result in (1) absolute risk (risk of developing cancer in one's lifetime) and (2) comparative risk (risk relative to the general population). Results indicated that absolute risk showed a trend such that those

Visual attention and driving behavior of male autistic individuals while encountering driving hazards: A driving simulator study.

Hazard perception is an important aspect of driving competence that significantly contributes to road safety. Allocating sufficient visual attention to hazards and responding accordingly can help reduce the likelihood of road crashes. Although hazard perception has been investigated to some extent in autistic individuals, little attention is given to hazards for which attention has to be divided among different hazard sources. The current study assessed visual attention and driving behavior of autistic individuals to hazards, including dividing and focusing attention (DF), environmental predic

"Meeting Intellectual, Psychological, and Developmental Disabilities": Evaluating an 8-Month Adapted Physical Activity Contact-Based Approach.

Stigma toward people with intellectual, psychological, or developmental disabilities persists. This study assessed the longitudinal impact of a contact-based educational intervention combining two methods of contact-indirect (theoretical teaching) and direct (adapted physical activity practice)-on intergroup anxiety and explicit social perceptions toward people with intellectual, psychological, or developmental disabilities. Thirty-nine undergraduate students took a teaching module on disability and completed assessments at four time points. The results revealed that intergroup anxiety signifi
