A Co-adaptive Few-shot Calibration Method for Improving Motor Imagery BCI Performance.

Motor Imagery Brain-computer Interfaces connect the human brain with external devices by imagining muscular activity, serving as one of the promising solutions for human-computer interaction. It has been successfully applied by paralyzed individuals to control assistive devices, prosthetics and exoskeletons, and several dedicated applications. However, about half of potential users exhibit MI illiteracy, which hinders its adoption in real-world settings. Calibration has been demonstrated as an effective approach to enhancing MI capabilities. Nevertheless, existing calibration methods face two

A wearable brain-computer interface to play an endless runner game by self-paced motor imagery.

Objective.A wearable brain-computer interface is proposed and validated experimentally in relation to the real-time control of an endless runner game by self-paced motor imagery(MI).Approach.Electroencephalographic signals were recorded via eight wet electrodes. The processing pipeline involved a filter-bank common spatial pattern approach and the combination of three binary classifiers exploiting linear discriminant analysis. This enabled the discrimination between imagining left-hand, right-hand, and no movement. Each mental task corresponded to an avatar horizontal motion within the game. T

Decoding Saccadic Directions Using Epidural ECoG in Non-Human Primates.

A brain-computer interface (BCI) can be used to restore some communication as an alternative interface for patients suffering from locked-in syndrome. However, most BCI systems are based on SSVEP, P300, or motor imagery, and a diversity of BCI protocols would be needed for various types of patients. In this paper, we trained the choice saccade (CS) task in 2 non-human primate monkeys and recorded the brain signal using an epidural electrocorticogram (eECoG) to predict eye movement direction. We successfully predicted the direction of the upcoming eye movement using a support vector machine (SV

A Neurophysiological Stratification Framework for Intermediate Motor Imagery-BCI Users Based on Independent Event-Related Brain Dynamics.

Background: Motor imagery-based brain-computer interfaces (MI-BCIs) enable individuals who are unable to perform physical movements to interact with the external world by imagining movements. Users are typically classified as good performers or BCI-illiterate based on the classification accuracy of distinct EEG patterns (e.g., 60% or 70%). Yet, studies show that approximately 70% of users fall within intermediate accuracies between 60% and 80%, and although exceed the chance level, they often fail to achieve reliable MI-BCI control. Intermediate users often exhibit asymmetric motor imagery abi

Optimizing third molar autotransplantation: applications of reverse-engineered surgical templates and rapid prototyping of three-dimensional teeth.

The success of autogenous tooth transplantation depends on the vitality of the periodontal ligament attached to the donor tooth, and its viability decreases when it is exposed extraorally. This report describes the case of a 16-year-old patient in whom a rapid prototyped tooth model was performed using cone-beam technology and a surgical template guide for autotransplantation as an effective technique for a critical time-based procedure.

Biom3d, a modular framework to host and develop 3D segmentation methods.

Bioimage frameworks based on artificial intelligence (AI) offer powerful tools for image segmentation, but their technical overhead often creates a gap between developers and the broader bioimaging community. Biom3d addresses this challenge by providing a modular, PyTorch-based architecture designed to enable reproducible and interoperable 2D and 3D segmentation pipelines while maintaining strict adherence to FAIR principles. The framework's engineering quality is demonstrated through low intra-module complexity, high modularity, and seamless interoperability, exemplified by the successful sub

Bioinspired Heat-Induced Viscoelasticity-Switchable Electrodes for Conformal Brain-Computer Interfaces.

Electroencephalography is a promising noninvasive modality for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), yet its widespread adoption is constrained by electrode limitations: dry electrodes yield unstable signals, whereas wet electrodes require laborious setup and are ill-suited to wearable devices. Inspired by honeybees that locally heat beeswax to reversibly switch it between rigid and moldable states for comb construction, this work introduces a heat-induced viscoelasticity-switchable electrode (HIVE) that enables conformal contact on hairy scalps and user-friendly operation in wearable systems. LASP to the Future of Atomic Simulation: Intelligence and Automation.

Atomic simulations aim to understand and predict complex physical phenomena, the success of which relies largely on the accuracy of the potential energy surface description and the efficiency to capture important rare events. LASP software (large-scale atomic simulation with a Neural Network Potential), released in 2018, incorporates the key ingredients to fulfill the ultimate goal of atomic simulations by combining advanced neural network potentials with efficient global optimization methods. This review introduces the recent development of the software along two main streams, namely, higher

Classification of BCI Multiclass Motor Imagery Task Based on Artificial Neural Network.

Motor imagery (MI) signals recorded by electroencephalography provide the most practical basis for conceiving brain-computer interfaces (BCI). These interfaces offer a high degree of freedom. This helps people with motor disabilities communicate with the device by tackling a sequence of motor imagery tasks. However, the extracting user-specific features and increasing the accuracy of the classifier remain as difficult tasks in MI-based BCI. In this work, we propose a new method using artificial neural network (ANN) enhancing the performance of the motor imagery classification. Feature extracti

CovidPhy: A tool for phylogeographic analysis of SARS-CoV-2 variation.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the pathogen responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. SARS-CoV-2 genomes have been sequenced massively and worldwide and are now available in different public genome repositories. There is much interest in generating bioinformatic tools capable to analyze and interpret SARS-CoV-2 variation. We have designed CovidPhy (http://covidphy.eu), a web interface that can process SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences in plain fasta text format or provided through identity codes from the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian

Motor imagery BCI enables more practical and user-friendly exoskeleton control than smartwatch for users with spinal cord injury: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has been widely studied for enabling individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) to control assistive robotic devices, such as lower-limb exoskeletons. Although BCI-based control of lower-limb exoskeletons has been investigated in individuals with SCI, comparisons with conventional interfaces, such as smartwatches, remain limited. In this study, we developed a BCI system that enables individuals with SCI to control a lower-limb exoskeleton through voluntary walking-related motor imagery. METHODS: This study involved 5 individuals

Auditory Perception as a Surrogate for Auditory Imagery in EEG-Based BCI Training: Neural Evidence and a Feasibility Study.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) systems are commonly classified as reactive or active. Reactive BCIs rely on responses to external stimuli, simplifying decoding but limiting direct user control. In contrast, active BCIs enable intuitive control through spontaneous mental activity but impose greater signal-processing challenges. Speech BCIs, a subset of active systems, hold promise for individuals with severe neurological impairments such as locked-in syndrome (LIS), potentially enabling communication through imagined speech. However, their adoption is hindered by the demanding pre-training requ

An Automated Workflow Leveraging Machine Learning for Physical Titer Determination from Cryo-TEM Images of Adeno-Associated Virus Capsids.

The application of gene therapies could be life-changing for many previously untreatable health conditions, but it is currently both financially expensive and time-intensive. Controlling the quality of these gene products involves monitoring impurities, such as partially filled and empty viral vectors, aggregates, and debris from the desired productfull viral capsids containing the genetic material for the gene of interest. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), with its ability to identify nanometer-sized structures, provides a good approximation of ground truth to determine the presence of

A classification of MRI brain tumor based on two stage feature level ensemble of deep CNN models.

The brain tumor is one of the deadliest cancerous diseases and its severity has turned it to the leading cause of cancer related mortality. The treatment procedure of the brain tumor depends on the type, location and size of the tumor. Relying solely on human inspection for precise categorization can lead to inevitably dangerous situation. This manual diagnosis process can be improved and accelerated through an automated Computer Aided Diagnosis (CADx) system. In this article, a novel approach using two-stage feature ensemble of deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) is proposed for precise
