Chest X-Ray as a Screening Tool for Aortic Arch Dilation: CT-Based Evaluation of Reliability.

Background: Chest radiography (CXR) remains the most common first-line imaging for thoracic abnormalities. While aortic knob width can reflect aortic dilation, no standardized, widely recognized thresholds of clinical utility exist. Methods: This pilot retrospective study analyzed 240 emergency department patients (median age 67 years, 61% male) who underwent both PA CXR and chest computed tomography angiography (CTA) within 7 days. Three aortic knob dimensions (horizontal, oblique, vertical) were measured on CXR and compared with CTA measurements at two anatomical levels: proximal to the brac

Orbital Remodeling and 3-dimensional Printing in Delayed Orbital Floor Fracture Reconstructions.

The mechanism and physiology of orbital cavity remodeling after orbital fractures is not well described. This poses a challenge in the delayed operative treatment of orbital floor fractures due to variations from expected anatomy and may risk injury to critical structures during exploration as well as misguided reconstruction, causing persistent ocular dystopia. We report a case where significant orbital remodeling caused unexpected challenges to orbital floor reconstruction, highlighting the need for further research in this field. A 23-year-old previously healthy man was treated conservative

The Photoprotective Behavior of a Motile Benthic Diatom as Elucidated from the Interplay Between Cell Motility and Physiological Responses to a Light Microgradient Using a Novel Experimental Setup.

It has long been hypothesized that benthic motile pennate diatoms use phototaxis to optimize photosynthesis and minimize photoinhibitory damage by adjusting their position within vertical light gradients in coastal benthic sediments. However, experimental evidence to test this hypothesis remains inconclusive, mainly due to methodological difficulties in studying cell behavior and photosynthesis over realistic spatial microscale gradients of irradiance and cell position. In this study, a novel experimental approach was developed and used to test the hypothesis of photosynthesis optimization thr

Specific postural alignment alterations due to long-face deformity in patients with maxillo-mandibular deformities.

BACKGROUND: A specific pathological postural adaptation is suspected in patients exhibiting maxillo-mandibular deformity (MMD); however, none study reported a correlation between facial dimensions and posture. In this study, we hypothesized that pathological postural adaptations are related to long-face deformity and subsequent oral breathing in patients with MMD METHODS: Thirty patients with MMD and 20 healthy subjects. Breathing mode, postural alignment and cephalometry were analyzed through a biplanar X-ray (EOS imaging®) of the skeleton in an upright position, followed by three-dimensional

Radiographic measures of the pelvis differ in British shorthair cats with dystocia and eutocia.

The size of an animal's pelvis can have a substantial impact on the ease or difficulty of giving birth, which can vary depending on the breed. Radiography is a medical imaging technique that is commonly utilized in clinical cases to assess pelvic dimensions. The present retrospective, observational study was designed to evaluate pelvimetric differences in radiographic images of British Shorthair (BS) cats with dystocia and eutocia. Pelvimetric values (linear distance, angle, area, height/width) for ventrodorsal and laterolateral radiographic images were recorded in 15 BS cats with dystocia and

Effect of α-Mangostin on Interleukin-11 and Runt-related Transcription Factor-2 Gene Expression on Cell Line Osteoblast Cultures Induced with Lipopolysaccharide.

BACKGROUND: Loss of permanent teeth after tooth extraction without replacement of missing teeth can result in impaired masticatory, esthetic, phonetic functions, and impaired balance of the masticatory organ in the mouth. Therefore, a method is needed to inhibit the alveolar bone resorption process so that the dimensions of the tooth socket can be maintained vertically or horizontally until the time of implant placement, which is called the socket preservation procedure. α-mangostin is known to have a potential anti-inflammatory effect and most likely can be used as a potential therapeutic age

A Visual-Vestibular Model to Predict Motion Sickness for Linear and Angular Motion.

OBJECTIVE: This study proposed a model to predict passenger motion sickness under the presence of a visual-vestibular conflict and assessed its performance with respect to previously recorded experimental data. BACKGROUND: While several models have been shown useful to predict motion sickness under repetitive motion, improvements are still desired in terms of predicting motion sickness in realistic driving conditions. There remains a need for a model that considers angular and linear visual-vestibular motion inputs in three dimensions to improve prediction of passenger motion sickness. METHO

The association of polymorphisms in BMP2/MYO1H and skeletal Class II div.1 maxillary and mandibular dimensions. A preliminary 'report.

INTRODUCTION: The genetic impact directly or indirectly predefines maxillofacial dimensions, potentially leading to an inappropriate relationship of the jaws and subsequently skeletal malocclusion. Previous studies focused mainly on genetic polymorphisms and class III malocclusion. This study was set out to investigate the association between genetic polymorphisms in two genes BMP2 (rs235768) and MYO1H (rs11066446) with Class II division 1 malocclusion, skeletal variation in vertical plane, and maxillary and mandibular jaws length. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Sixty patients classified as Skeletal C

Bone quality and quantity of the mandibular symphyseal region in autogenous bone grafting using cone-beam computed tomography: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Bone volume plays a pivotal role in the success of dental implant treatment. Autogenous bone grafts should be harvested from reliable sites in the maxillofacial region. This study sought to assess the quantity and quality of bone in the mandibular symphysis for autogenous bone graft harvesting using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated the CBCT scans of 78 adults presenting to three oral and maxillofacial radiology centers. The vertical (VD) and horizontal (HD) alveolar bone dimensions, cortical thickness (CT), and cancellous to corti

Effect of an artificial ring on mitral valve function.

Differences of the effect of annuloplasty rings on the mitral annulus and leaflets, and differences between types of annuloplasty rings are not well known. We analyzed annular motion and leaflet movement with a rigid or flexible ring and without a ring using an isolated swine working heart model. Hearts of 10 swine (weight: 40-50 kg) were used for a rigid ring (n=5) and a flexible ring (n=5). Four ultrasound crystal tips were fixed around the annulus and an annuloplasty ring was implanted in the isolated heart. In the working heart mode, measurement of mitral annular dimension was acquired by
