Acute management and secondary prophylaxis of esophageal variceal bleeding: a western Canadian survey.

BACKGROUND: Acute esophageal variceal bleeding (EVB) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with liver cirrhosis. Guidelines have been published in 1997; however, variability in the acute management and prevention of EVB rebleeding may occur. METHODS: Gastroenterologists in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan were sent a self-reporting questionnaire. RESULTS: The response rate was 70.4% (86 of 122). Intravenous octreotide was recommended by 93% for EVB patients but the duration was variable. The preferred timing for endoscopy in suspected ac…

Intraocular pressure control and persistence on treatment in glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to characterize current patterns of treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension and to examine the effect of those patterns on intraocular pressure (IOP) control and persistence on therapy. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted at 3 ophthalmology practices in Alberta. Data were collected for patients who had begun therapy for newly diagnosed primary open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension between May 1, 1998, and Sept. 30, 1999 (phase 1), and for patients who had begun second-line therapy after initial therapy with a beta-blocker ha…

Heart defects and other malformations in the Inuit in Canada: a baseline study.

OBJECTIVES: Birth defects occur in all ethnic groups, remaining an important world-wide cause of perinatal and infant morbidity. This contributes greatly to an excess of health care dollars allocated to the care and repair of those affected. This is especially true when those affected live in remote geographical locations. STUDY DESIGN: A chart review of 2567 live births of children of Inuit parents residing in Arctic Quebec (Nunavik) and on Baffin Island (Nunavut) between 1989 and 1994 (five years) was carried out compared to rates of anomalies of the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillanc…

Patient outcomes related to percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy placement.

Although many aspects of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) have been addressed in the literature, attention to psychologic and social outcomes of PEG has been limited. Our goal was to assess a range of physical, psychologic, and social outcomes related to PEG feeding. This study is a follow-up survey of patients undergoing PEG and/or their surrogates. Data were collected by semistructured interviews in two tertiary hospitals in Alberta, Canada. Measurements consisted of PEG status at 1-year follow-up, quality of life, impact on caregivers, and opinions about long-term support via PEG. …

Characterization of the M protein and nucleoprotein genes of an avian influenza A virus which are involved in host range restriction in monkeys.

A reassortant virus possessing RNA segment 7, which codes for the M1 and M2 proteins, of the avian influenza A/Mallard/New York/6750/78 (H2N2) virus and the other seven RNA segments of the human influenza A/Udorn/307/72 (H3N2) virus had been shown previously to be markedly restricted in replication in the respiratory tract of squirrel monkeys. In contrast, a reassortant possessing segment 7 of another avian influenza virus, A/Pintail/Alberta/119/79 (H4N6), and the seven other RNA segments from the A/Udorn/72 virus was not restricted. The nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequence of the RNA se…

Maternal Asthma and Adverse Perinatal Outcomes: An Analysis of 434,068 Pregnancies in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Maternal asthma is a known risk factor for asthma and allergic diseases in children. However, there is a lack of data on the role of asthma phenotypes in the association with perinatal outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of maternal asthma in adverse perinatal outcomes, such as preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), and cesarean (C-section) deliveries. METHODS: This cohort study included all singleton live-birth pregnancies in Alberta between October 2009 and December 2018. Maternal asthma was defined by the International Classification of Diseases codes (ICD-9/10:…

Association between adverse birth outcomes and long-term risk of premature cardiovascular disease and mortality in a contemporary population-based cohort of 502,383 pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: Relatively few studies have examined the association between the entire spectrum of adverse birth outcomes [stillbirth, preterm birth (PTB), term births that are low birth weight (LBW) or high birth weight (HBW)] and long-term risk of CVD in the mother. Our objective was to examine the association between birth outcomes and risk of premature CVD or death in a contemporary cohort of pregnant women. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study of women in Alberta, Canada, between 01/01/2005 and 01/01/2023. The primary endpoint was a composite of CVD-related ho…

Retrospective Cohort Study of Financial Incentives for Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing and Treatment in an Outreach Population in Edmonton, Canada, 2018-2019.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STI) continues to increase worldwide. Patient incentives are one proposed intervention to increase STI testing and treatment. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study comparing incentivized versus routine care for STI outreach test and treat services between October 2018 and June 2019. Incentivized care included a $10 gift card for testing visits and an additional $10 gift card for results and/or treatment visits. Incentivized visits were offered to clients with a lack of housing, who were difficult to locate, or had a hi
