Intracranial blood flow measured with single photon emission computer tomography (SPECT) during transient -6 degrees head-down tilt.

Regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) during a transient head-down tilt of -6 degrees (-6 degrees HDT) was measured with single photon emission computer tomography (SPECT). CBF was measured and averaged for both sides of the brain areas; e.g., the bilateral anterior cerebral artery (bACA) area, the middle cerebral artery (bMCA) area, the posterior cerebral artery (bPCA) area, bilateral basal ganglia, and the cerebellum. Among these areas, a significant increase in CBF was observed in the basal ganglia and the cerebellum during -6 degrees HDT compared to pre-HDT. When CBF was measured separately i

Effect of caffeine on submaximal exercise performance at altitude.

The purpose of this study was to determine if caffeine (CAF) could enhance exercise performance at high altitude (HA). Eight males (17 to 24 years) performed two submaximal endurance tests to exhaustion (ETX) while cycling at approximately 80% of their altitude-specific maximal aerobic power during each of three phases: 1) sea level (SL); 2) after 1 h (acute) at 4,300 m; and 3) after 2 weeks (chronic) at 4,300 m. Subjects received either CAF (4 mg.kg-1) or a placebo drink 1 h prior to each ETX bout at each phase in a double-blind crossover design. ETX was little affected during CAF treatment a

Effect of cinnarizine in the prevention of seasickness.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, we evaluated the effect of two different doses of cinnarizine in the prevention of seasickness in very rough seas. We divided 95 healthy male subjects into 3 groups which received: cinnarizine 50 mg, cinnarizine 25 mg, and placebo. Seasickness susceptibility and severity were evaluated by a standard questionnaire concerning the subject's condition on previous voyages (seasickness susceptibility), and the subject's condition immediately after a 4-6-h voyage in very rough seas with 3.5 m waves (seasickness severity). Possible side effects of the drug

Seasickness susceptibility, personality factors, and salivation.

The present study investigates the possible relationship between motion sickness susceptibility, personality factors and salivation. Personality factors, as evaluated by the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, and salivary composition and flow were measured in a group of 29 subjects highly susceptible to seasickness and in a group of 25 non-susceptible subjects. The non-susceptible group had significantly higher psychoticism scores and significantly lower salivary amylase levels compared to the highly susceptible group. A significant positive correlation was found between psychoticism scores an

Cognitive-behavioral management of motion sickness.

This monograph is intended to provide health professionals with information on a cognitive-behavioral technique which was developed to teach individuals who are prone to motion sickness to better cope with motion environments. It includes an overview of motion sickness, describing the signs and symptoms, etiology and incidence of this malady. Prevention and treatment are then reviewed, including both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. The historical background on the cognitive-behavioral technique is then discussed. This is followed by a review of supporting experimental work,

Cardiovascular responses to upright tilt at a simulated altitude of 3,700 m in men.

To examine the effects of high altitude on cardiovascular responses to orthostasis, 11 healthy males were tested at a 10-min passive 70 degrees head-up tilt at sea level and at a simulated high altitude of 3,700 m. During the control period in the supine position, heart rate and forearm blood flow were higher at high altitude (p < 0.05). Mean arterial pressure remained unchanged during head-up tilt at sea level, but it reduced from 82 mm Hg to 72 mm Hg (p < 0.05) during head-up tilt at high altitude. There were no altitude-related changes in the magnitude of the increase in forearm vascular re

Incidence of cardiac dysrhythmias occurring during centrifuge training.

High-G training has been reported to provoke dysrhythmias in many subjects. These reports have been based on small subject groups. Students attending aeromedical professional courses at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine are offered the opportunity to participate in high-G centrifuge training on the Armstrong Laboratory centrifuge, during which ECG monitoring is routinely performed. This study documents the incidence of dysrhythmias in this large group of subjects. The pertinent information from the records of 1,180 training sessions from 1984-91 were transcribed to a database on a personal

Relating alcohol-induced performance deficits to mental capacity: a suggested methodology.

Performance tests are generally more reliable and more easily administered than on-the-job measures of performance, and in this way are preferable for studying the adverse consequences of environmental stressors. However, a linkage or context would be useful in interpretation of these laboratory measures. This paper reports findings with two indexing methods using multiple regression. In the first study, we illustrate "dose equivalency" where deficits on microcomputer performance tests were related to graded dosages of alcohol, and prediction equations of blood alcohol level were established.

Helicopter rotor blade injury: a persistent safety hazard in the U.S. Army.

Rotor blade injuries are an inherent hazard of helicopter operations. To determine the recent incidence of rotor blade injuries in the U.S. Army, a review of accident records (1972-91) was conducted. Crash-related injuries were not included. During the study period, there were 24 blade strike injuries (12 involving the main rotor), 11 (46%) of which were fatal. Comparison with previous reports indicates a lower rotor blade injury rate in the last decade than in any previous period. The head was injured most frequently (65%), followed by the chest (17%) and abdomen (7%). Protective helmets help

Unregulated self-medication in an ambulatory surgery population.

The objective of this study was to determine whether unregulated self-medication in an ambulatory surgery population was a significant problem in terms of the incidence and nature of drugs detected. We asked 67 consecutive patients who presented for elective ambulatory surgery at a university medical center to volunteer for serum and urine testing with the assurance of confidentiality. All patients denied nonprescription drug use. Initial testing was for amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and alcohol. Of the 64 patient

Spectral analysis of the electroencephalographic response to motion sickness.

Ten subjects participated in a laboratory experiment using cross-coupled angular stimulation to induce motion sickness symptoms. A 14-channel montage using subdermal electrodes was employed to record the electroencephalogram during a pre-Coriolis stimulation baseline through to imminent emesis. Spectral analyses of the EEG were performed upon the recorded data and individual band energies were quantified to attempt to characterize the cortical electrical response to motion sickness. Power spectral analysis was performed upon the temporo-frontal signals through the entire period over the delta,

Space and cognition: the measurement of behavioral functions during a 6-day space mission.

We measured nonspecific (attention, mental flexibility, psychomotor speed) and visuospatial cognitive processing in a single case study during a 6-d visit on the Russian orbital complex MIR, using computer-based psychometric tasks. Reaction times and accuracy scores showed only minor, nonsignificant changes between preflight, flight, and postflight assessments. These results suggest that several behavioral functions, among them complex visuospatial processing skills, remain essentially intact on short space visits, provided that the performing subject experiences no symptoms of space motion si

Changes in the dark focus of accommodation associated with simulator sickness.

The relationship between the dark focus of accommodation and simulator sickness, a form of motion sickness, was examined in three experiments. In Experiment 1, dark focus was measured in 18 college students in a laboratory setting before and after they viewed a projected motion scene depicting low altitude helicopter flight. In Experiments 2 and 3, dark focus was measured in pilots (N = 16 and 23, respectively) before and after they "flew" in moving-base helicopter flight simulators with optical infinity CRT visual systems. The results showed that individuals who experienced simulator sickness

Perceptual scaling of whole-body low frequency linear oscillatory motion.

Evidence that Z-axis oscillation in the Earth-vertical plane is more provocative of motion sickness than the equivalent imposed oscillation acting in the Earth-horizontal raises the possibility that horizontal oscillation is perceived as less intense than equivalent vertical oscillation. In Experiment 1, subjects (n = 8) were oscillated through their head Z-axis in both the Earth-vertical and horizontal planes. In Experiment 2, another group (n = 10) were oscillated through their head Y-axis in the Earth-horizontal. Stimuli were 5 cycles of motion at 0.3 Hz ranging in 3.5 dB intervals from 0.1

Autonomic function and plasma catecholamines following stressful sensory stimuli.

This experimentation defined a limited role for epinephrine in the autonomic nervous system function and the nausea that occurred following motion sickness testing. Individual responses to stressful sensory stimuli and nausea, as reflected by rising peripheral levels of epinephrine, were not significantly diminished upon repeated exposure and adaptation to the stressor. However, subjects who demonstrated more robust elevations of epinephrine in response to nausea displayed higher resistances to stressful motion stimuli. Modulation of peripheral catecholaminergic function with dexamethasone, or

The effects of Benadryl and Hismanal on mood, physiological measures, antihistamine detection, and subjective symptoms.

The majority of antihistamines have sedative effects; however, it is claimed that Hismanal (astemizole) does not possess central nervous system side effects. A three-factor, repeated measures, double-blind design was used to compare the effects of singl oral doses of 1) Benadryl (diphenhydramine), 50 mg; 2) Hismanal, 10 mg; and 3) placebo, on two mood scales, physiological measures, sleepiness, the ability to detect ingestion of an antihistamine versus placebo, and symptoms in 28 healthy men. Higher tension, greater fatigue, and lower activity levels were reported post-Benadryl (p < 0.05). Low

Cochlear degeneration in guinea pigs after repeated hyperbaric exposures.

The effects of repeated hyperbaric exposures on inner ear function and morphology in guinea pigs were investigated with auditory electrophysiological testing, histopathological and electron microscopic techniques associated with enzyme histochemical method. The results showed that repeated hyperbaric exposures, though considered "safe," did cause damage to the cochlear system. Possible causes of the pathology include direct effects of repeated compression and decompression on the ear, and the possibility of inner ear decompression sickness and barotrauma cannot be excluded.

Recovery of the hypoxic ventilatory drive of rats from the toxic effect of hyperbaric oxygen.

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) exposure reduces the hypoxic ventilatory drive (HVD), probably by damaging the carotid bodies. The recovery of the HVD from HBO exposure was studied. The HVD was calculated from whole body plethysmographic recordings of the ventilatory response to greater than 85% and 2% O2 in N2 mixtures. Five groups of rats were exposed to HBO for 9 h at pressures of 1.9, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, and 2.4 ATA, respectively. Each rat underwent three control measurements on different days prior to HBO exposures and then at various intervals following the exposure. Postexposure HVD was reduced to 2

Attenuation of human carotid-cardiac vagal baroreflex responses after physical detraining.

Astronauts who are occupied with prelaunch schedules may have to limit their regular physical exercise routines. To assess a potential effect on blood pressure control, carotid baroreceptor-cardiac reflex responses of 16 men (30-45 years of age) were evaluated before and after 2 weeks of exercise detraining that followed 10 weeks of regular scheduled exercise (30 min/d, 4 d/week at 75% Vo2max). At mid-expiration, the subjects held their breath and 40 mm Hg of pressure was applied to a neck chamber for four heart beats, followed by 15-mm Hg, R-wave triggered decrements to -65 mm Hg.
