Effects of topical corticosteroids and lidocaine on Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in mouse skin: potential impact to human clinical trials.

Lyme borreliosis is the most prevalent vector-borne disease in northern hemisphere. Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato spirochetes are transmitted by Ixodes species ticks. During a blood meal, these spirochetes are inoculated into the skin where they multiply and often spread to various target organs: disseminated skin sites, the central nervous system, the heart and large joints. The usual diagnosis of this disease relies on serological tests. However, in patients presenting persistent clinical manifestations, this indirect diagnosis is not capable of detecting an active infection. If the serolo

High functioning male with fragile X syndrome and fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) affects individuals with more than 200 CGG repeats (full mutation) in the fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene. Those born with FXS experience cognitive and social impairments, developmental delays, and some features of autism spectrum disorders. Carriers of a premutation (55-200 CGG repeats) are generally not severely affected early in life; however, are at high risk of developing the late onset neurodegenerative disorder, Fragile X-associated Tremor/Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS), or Fragile X-associated Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (FXPOI), and may have other medica

[A case of neonatal meningitis due to Listeria monocytogenes serotype 1/2b].

Listeria monocytogenes, although an uncommon cause of illness in the general population, is an important pathogen in pregnants, neonates, elderly and immunocompromised patients. Neonatal listeriosis is classified as early (< 5 days) and late (? 5 days) according to the onset of the symptoms and findings of the infection. The most encountered serotypes in early neonatal listeriosis are 1a and 1b, while serotype 4a is more prevalent in the late form. In this report, a neonatal L.monocytogenes meningitis case developed in a female infant born after 36 weeks of gestation from a 29 years old mother

Not all injection drug users are created equal: heterogeneity of HIV, hepatitis C virus, and hepatitis B virus infection in Georgia.

Injection drug users (IDU) are widely believed to have accelerated the looming HIV/AIDS epidemic now faced by the Russian Federation and countries of the former Soviet Union. However, IDUs may be heterogeneous with regard to risk behaviors, and a subpopulation may be responsible for the majority of blood-borne pathogen transmission. We studied 926 adult injection drug users (IDU) from the cities of Tbilisi, Batumi, and Poti in Georgia, a small country in the Caucuses region between the Black and Caspian Seas, between 1997 and 1998. Study participants were administered a confidential questionna

Tick-borne tularaemia as a differential diagnosis in ulcerative skin infection and regional lymphadenopathy in children: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Tularaemia is a rare but re-emergent zoonosis in Germany, which reached a new peak in incidence in 2024. The infection rate of ticks in Germany with Francisella tularensis is only about 8% and the transmission of a clinically apparent infection by blood-sucking arthropods such as ticks, mosquitoes or horseflies accounts for about 30% of the infection routes in humans. Arthropod-borne tularaemia mainly presents as the glandular or ulceroglandular form. Delayed diagnosis and initiation of treatment with associated increased risk of complications are common. Those complications may in

Red pulp macrophages clear parasites, while marginal metallophilic and marginal zone macrophages support CD4+ T cell activation during Plasmodium yoelii infection.

Malaria, caused by the parasite Plasmodium spp., remains the most prevalent and dangerous vector-borne infectious disease worldwide. Effective pathogen clearance during malaria hinges on the interplay between adaptive and innate immune responses, especially on T cells, B cells, antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and IFNγ response. In a previous study, we demonstrated that dendritic cell (DC) depletion resulted in impaired T cell responses. However, substantial CD4+ and CD8+ T cell activation was still detectable, suggesting that other APCs compensate for the lack of DCs. In the present study, we

The Effect of Urbanization and Sampling Date on Blood Immunophysiology and Haemosporidian Parasitemia in Cardueline Finches.

Urbanization alters habitat structure, resource availability, and influences pathogen transmission, leading to widespread ecological disruptions as it continues to expand. We investigated the impact of urbanization on physiological stress and vector-borne parasite prevalence in 3 Cardueline finch species: house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), lesser goldfinches (Spinus psaltria), and pine siskins (S. pinus). We hypothesized that urbanization level (urban, suburban, and rural) would be associated with higher heterophil to lymphocyte (H/L) ratios, a proxy of stress, and increased parasite preval

Unraveling the miRNA landscape in tsetse fly saliva and salivary glands during Trypanosoma brucei infections.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are emerging as potential mediators of cross-species gene regulation in vector-borne diseases. Using small RNA-sequencing, this study investigated the presence of miRNAs in the tsetse fly (Glossina morsitans)-trypanosome parasite system, focusing on the fly's salivary glands and saliva during Trypanosoma brucei infections. To ensure annotation accuracy, we implemented a robust pipeline incorporating de novo prediction, comparative analyses and manual curation to minimize false positives. This resulted in the detection of 54 unique miRNAs in tsetse saliva and salivary glands,

In silico identification and field validation of diagnostic marker gene targets for the improved detection of scrub typhus.

Scrub typhus, a vector-borne zoonosis prevalent in the Asia-Pacific region, poses diagnostic challenges due to the pathogen's complex genome and diverse rodent and shrew hosts. The scarcity of reliable diagnostic tests hinders effective sentinel surveillance. This study aims to identify novel diagnostic gene targets using a bioinformatics approach to develop a highly sensitive and specific PCR assay for scrub typhus detection. Genome sequences of Orientia tsutsugamushi, the causative agent, were analyzed, leading to the selection of 11 potential diagnostic biomarkers. In-house conventional PCR

Spatial dynamics of malaria transmission.

The Ross-Macdonald model has exerted enormous influence over the study of malaria transmission dynamics and control, but it lacked features to describe parasite dispersal, travel, and other important aspects of heterogeneous transmission. Here, we present a patch-based differential equation modeling framework that extends the Ross-Macdonald model with sufficient skill and complexity to support planning, monitoring and evaluation for Plasmodium falciparum malaria control. We designed a generic interface for building structured, spatial models of malaria transmission based on a new algorithm for
