The Potential Role of Cigarette Smoke, Elastic Fibers, and Secondary Lung Injury in the Transition of Pulmonary Emphysema to Combined Pulmonary Fibrosis and Emphysema.

Combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema (CPFE) is a distinct syndrome associated with heavy smoking. The fibrotic component of the disease is generally believed to be superimposed on previously existing pulmonary emphysema, but the mechanisms responsible for these changes remain poorly understood. To better understand the pathogenesis of CPFE, we performed a series of experiments that focused on the relationships between lung elastic fibers, cigarette smoke, and secondary lung injury. The results indicate that even brief smoke exposure predisposes the lung to additional forms of lung injury

Effects of exercise therapy using elastic bands on strength and pain in women with non-specific neck pain: A randomised controlled trial.

BackgroundCervical pain has a high incidence and worldwide socio-economic effect. Its incidence is lower in men than in women. Conservative and non-pharmacological therapeutic options include strength training. Elastic bands are commonly used in physiotherapy clinics for strength work in patients. Consequently, the objective of this research was to analyse the efficacy of an exercise therapy programme using elastic bands on decreasing pain and increasing strength of the neck flexor musculature, cervical extensor, and scapular stabilizing musculature in women suffering from non-specific cervica

Time-Course Changes in Dorsiflexion Range of Motion, Stretch Tolerance, and Shear Elastic Modulus for 20 Minutes of Hot Pack Application.

The application of thermal agents via hot packs is a commonly utilized method. However, the time-course changes in the range of motion (ROM), stretch sensation, shear elastic modulus, and muscle temperature during hot pack application are not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the time-course changes in these variables during a 20-minute hot pack application. Eighteen healthy young men (21.1 ± 0.2 years) participated in this study. We measured the dorsiflexion (DF) ROM, passive torque at DF ROM (an indicator of stretch tolerance), and shear elastic modulus (an indicator of muscle

The effect of thickness and elastic modulus of the anterior talofibular ligament on anterior ankle joint stiffness: A subject-specific finite element study.

Ankle sprain is a frequent type of sports injury leading to lateral ligament injury. The anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) is a primary ligamentous stabilizer of the ankle joint and typically the most vulnerable ligament injured in a lateral ankle sprain (LAS). This study aimed to quantitively investigate the effect of the thickness and elastic modulus of ATFL on anterior ankle joint stiffness (AAJS) by developing nine subject-specific finite element (FE) models under acute injury, chronic injury, and control conditions of ATFL. A 120 N forward force was applied at the posterior calcaneus l

Clinical Significance of Dual-Block Elastic Stain Evaluating Visceral Pleural Invasion in Peripheral Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

Visceral pleural invasion (VPI) is a critical component in the staging of peripheral non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). We aim to investigate whether dual-block elastic stain increases visceral pleural invasion positivity compared with single-block elastic stain. We further analyze the potential predictors of visceral pleural invasion. 8419 peripheral NSCLC patients (including 6008 patients with tumor size≤3 cm in stage I) were divided into a cohort using one paraffin block (single-block group, n = 5184) and a cohort using dual paraffin blocks (dual-block group, n = 3235) for elastic stain

Soft and elastic silver nanoparticle-cellulose sponge as fresh-keeping packaging to protect strawberries from physical damage and microbial invasion.

Strawberry is a nutritious food that is susceptible to mechanical injury and microbiological infection. Traditional coatings for strawberry packaging provide resistance against microbial infection but not against mechanical damage. In this study, a soft and elastic cellulose sponge modified with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs@CS-1:1) was prepared as strawberry packaging material, and it provided effective protection against mechanical damage. In addition, after 1000 cyclic compression, AgNPs@CS-1:1 presented only 16.80% unrecoverable deformation and still had elasticity, suggesting its fatigue re…

Key Residues in δ Opioid Receptor Allostery Explored by the Elastic Network Model and the Complex Network Model Combined with the Perturbation Method.

Opioid receptors, a kind of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), mainly mediate an analgesic response via allosterically transducing the signal of endogenous ligand binding in the extracellular domain to couple to effector proteins in the intracellular domain. The δ opioid receptor (DOP) is associated with emotional control besides pain control, which makes it an attractive therapeutic target. However, its allosteric mechanism and key residues responsible for the structural stability and signal communication are not completely clear. Here we utilize the Gaussian network model (GNM) and amino a

An Elastic Foot Orthosis for Limiting the Increase of Shear Modulus of Lower Leg Muscles after a Running Task: A Randomized Crossover Trial.

BACKGROUND: Excessive foot pronation may be attributed to an increasing burden on leg muscles during running, which might be a factor in medial tibial stress syndrome. We developed an elastic foot orthosis (EFO) that can decrease foot pronation and aimed to identify whether this orthosis could limit the increase in lower leg muscle hardness after running. METHODS: Twenty-one healthy volunteers participated in this randomized crossover trial with an elastic or sham foot orthosis (SFO). All volunteers ran on a treadmill for 60 min while wearing either orthosis. Muscle hardness of the posterior

The Modified Osseodensification Visco-Elastic (MOVE) Sinus Protocol: A Case Series to Illustrate the Combination of Osseodensification with Viscoelastic Bone Replacement Material.

INTRODUCTION: The Modified Osseodensification Visco-Elastic (MOVE) protocol combines two established techniques for sinus lifting: osseodensification drills to elevate the Schneiderian membrane, and the use of a viscoelastic putty to distribute forces on the membrane, a combination first described by Neiva et al. (2019). This case series elucidates the technique for combining these materials, and its possible benefits, which include reduced procedure time, less traumatic sinus elevation, and more versatility for unusual sinus anatomy, such as sloped sinus floors and immediate implant sites. Evaluating Elastic-Plastic Wavy and Spherical Asperity-Based Statistical and Multi-Scale Rough Surface Contact Models with Deterministic Results.

The solution to an elastic-plastic rough surface contact problem can be applied to phenomena such as friction and contact resistance. Many different types of models have therefore been developed to solve rough surface contact. A deterministic approach may accurately describe the entire surface, but the computing time is too long for practical use. Thus, mathematically abbreviated models have been developed to describe rough surface contact. Many popular models employ a statistical methodology to solve the contact problem, and they borrow the solution for spherical or parabolic contact to repre

Elastic pneumatic tourniquet cuff can reduce postoperative thigh pain after total knee arthroplasty: a prospective randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Tourniquet use is associated with complications such as thigh pain, skin problems, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This prospective study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the pneumatic tourniquet system using an elastic cuff and limb occlusion pressure (LOP) in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The hypothesis of this study was that an elastic cuff tourniquet would result in less postoperative thigh pain after TKA. METHODS: This prospective randomized controlled trial involved a total of 98 patients who underwent primary TKA. They were randomized into two groups: tournique

Cardiac-gated intracranial elastance in a swine model of raised intracranial pressure: a novel method to assess intracranial pressure-volume dynamics.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of intracranial elastance; however, methodological difficulties have limited widespread clinical use. Measuring elastance may offer potential benefit in helping to identify patients at risk for untoward intracranial pressure (ICP) elevation from small rises in intracranial volume. The authors sought to develop an easily used method that accounts for the changing ICP that occurs over a cardiac cycle and to assess this method in a large-animal model over a broad range of ICPs. METHODS: The authors used their previously described cardi

Distal third femoral shaft fractures in school-aged children: A comparative study of elastic stable intramedullary nail and external fixator.

Internal fixation such as elastic stable intramedullary(ESIN) nail and submuscular plate (SMP) is gaining popularity for femoral shaft fractures in school-aged children. However, external fixation (ExFix) might be a valuable option for the distal third femoral shaft fractures, where the fracture heals rapidly, but it is crucial to avoid angular malunion. This study aims to compare the clinical outcomes, postoperative complications of distal third femoral shaft fractures in school-aged children treated by ESIN versus ExFix.Patients aged 5 to 11 years with distal third femoral shaft fractures tr
