Intestinal parasites in pediatric patients with diarrhoeal diseases in Bangkok.

Stool examinations of 147 pediatric patients with diarrhoeal disease were carried out at Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok by using the direct-smear technique. Stool of 27 patients (18.4%) were positive for intestinal parasites. Children under one year of age were free of intestinal helminths and protozoa. Parasites were equally prevalent in males and females and without any age group predilection. The prevalence of intestinal parasites were Entamoeba histolytica 6.8%, Giardia lamblia 6.1%, others were Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm, Trichuris trichiura and Balantidium coli. Although the incidence of …

[Use of ultrasound, ultrasound-directed fine needle puncture and aspiration in amebic abscess of the liver. Case report and short overview].

Case report on a 48-year-old Swiss male living in Burundi who suddenly fell ill with vomiting and anorexia, followed by pappy stools, weakness and impotence. He presented with hepatomegaly, while sedimentation rate and alkaline phosphatase were both elevated. Stool examination revealed cysts and vegetative forms of Entamoeba histolytica, while amebic serology was negative. Treatment with ornidazole and later with diloxanide furoate was given. Sonography showed two cystoid areas in the right lobe of the liver. In the third sonographically guided fine-needle puncture both lesions were fully aspi…

Serodiagnosis of amoebic abscess: a retrospective diagnostic accuracy study of kits marketed in Europe.

UNLABELLED: Amoebiasis is a cosmopolitan parasitic disease caused by Entamoeba histolytica. The most lethal form is extra-intestinal amoebiasis, mainly manifesting as liver abscesses. Diagnosis is based on clinical, radiological, and biological tests. However, there are currently few serology reagents still available on the European market for in vitro diagnosis, and comparative studies of existing reagents are required. We evaluated the performances of the four currently available reagents, either as standalone tests or in combination. Two enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) for the d…

Investigation of Intestinal Protozoon Prevalence in Immunocompromised Patients at a University Hospital.

OBJECTIVE: Immunocompromised patients are at a greater risk of developing intestinal parasite infections. In this study, we examined the pre … istribution of intestinal parasites in patients were 7% Blastocystis spp., 2% Blastocystis spp. + Dientamoeba fragilis, 1% Blastocystis spp. + Entamoeba coli, 1% Blastocystis spp. + Giardia intestinalis and 1% G. intestinalis. Microsporidia spp. were detected in 4% of all patients by the IFAT method and in 8% of all patients by calcoflour staining method. …

Amoebic liver abscess in a COVID-19 patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Amoebiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Entamoeba histolytica, which affects people living in low- and middle-income countries and has intestinal and extraintestinal manifestations. To date, knowledge on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) coinfection with enteric parasites is limited, and E. histolytica coinfection has not been previously described. Here we present the case of a patient with COVID-19 who, during hospitalisation, presented a clinical picture consistent with an amoebic liver abscess (ALA). CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old man, admitted as a suspected case of CO…

Protection against Amoebic Liver Abscess in Hamster by Intramuscular Immunization with an Autographa californica Baculovirus Driving the Expression of the Gal-Lectin LC3 Fragment.

In a previous study, we demonstrated that oral immunization using Autographa californica baculovirus driving the expression of the Gal-lectin LC3 fragment (AcNPV-LC3) of Entamoeba histolytica conferred protection against ALA development in hamsters. In this study, we determined the ability of AcNPV-LC3 to protect against ALA by the intramuscular route as well as the liver immune response associated with protection. Results showed that 55% of hamsters IM immunized with AcNPV-LC3 showed sterile protection against ALA, whereas other 20% showed reduction in the size and extent of abscesses, result…

[Occurrence of human intestinal parasites in selected populations of Cracow region in the years 2000-2006 on the basis of parasitological stool examinations performed in the Laboratory of Parasitology of the District Sanitary-Epidemiological Center].

BACKGROUND: Infections with intestinal parasites are the most frequent parasitic diseases in all human populations. According to available e … s (2.35% and 1.84% respectively), and in the population of citizens returning from the tropics were Entamoeba coli (6.98%). Besides, a gradual trend of decrease in the number of patients referred directly to our laboratory for parasitic examination of stool samples was noted over the last years.
