Feeding cues alter clock gene oscillations and photic responses in the suprachiasmatic nuclei of mice exposed to a light/dark cycle.

The suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the hypothalamus contain the master mammalian circadian clock, which is mainly reset by light. Temporal restricted feeding, a potent synchronizer of peripheral oscillators, has only weak influence on light-entrained rhythms via the SCN, unless restricted feeding is coupled with calorie restriction, thereby altering phase angle of photic synchronization. Effects of daytime restricted feeding were investigated on the mouse circadian system. Normocaloric feeding at midday led to a predominantly diurnal (60%) food intake and decreased blood glucose in the aftern

The role of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens and striatum during sexual behavior in the female rat.

Dopamine in dialysate from the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) increases during sexual and feeding behavior and after administration of drugs of abuse, even those that do not directly activate dopaminergic systems (e.g., morphine or nicotine). These findings and others have led to hypotheses that propose that dopamine is rewarding, predicts that reinforcement will occur, or attributes incentive salience. Examining increases in dopamine in NAcc or striatum during sexual behavior in female rats provides a unique situation to study these relations. This is because, for the female rat, sexual behavior is…

High-mobility group box 1-mediated microglial activation induces anxiodepressive-like behaviors in mice with neuropathic pain.

Clinical evidence indicates that major depression is a common comorbidity of chronic pain, including neuropathic pain. However, the cellular basis for chronic pain-mediated major depression remains unclear. High-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1) has a key role in innate immune responses and appears to be have a role in mediating diverse disorders, including neuropathic pain and depression. The current study aimed to characterize neuropathic pain-induced changes in affect over time and to determine whether HMGB1 has a role in neuropathic pain-induced changes in affect. Neuropathic pain was i

NTS Neural Subtypes and Satiety Pathways: taVNS as a Novel Neuromodulatory Intervention.

The global obesity epidemic has become one of the most severe public health challenges of the 21st century, and existing treatment strategies have limitations such as poor long-term adherence, significant side effects, or high invasiveness. Dysregulation of feeding behavior is the core driver of obesity, and its precise regulation depends on the complete transmission of gut-brain axis signals. The nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), as the first central relay station for visceral afferent signals, is a key hub for the regulation of feeding homeostasis. This article reviews the peripheral sign…

Nutritional effects of using cactus cladodes (Opuntia stricta Haw Haw) to replace sorghum silage in sheep diet.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of replacing the sorghum silage in sheep diet with cactus cladodes [CC - Opuntia stricta (Haw) Haw] on dry matter and its compound intake and digestibility, feeding behavior, and nitrogen balance. The diets consisted of five replacement levels [0, 200, 400, 600, and 800 g/kg on a dry matter (DM) basis] and were formulated to be isonitrogenous [140 g/kg crude protein [CP], considering the ingredients' composition, with a roughage/concentrate ratio of 65:35, on a DM basis. Five uncastrated crossbred sheep, with an average body weight of 52…

Comparing cognition, mealtime performance, and nutritional status in people with dementia with or without ideational apraxia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence rate of ideational apraxia (IA) affecting self-feeding in people with dementia, confirm the stage of dementia at which IA most commonly occurs, and compare mealtime performance and nutritional status between people with dementia (PWD) with and without IA. METHOD: A cross-sectional design with between-subject comparison was used. Among the 395 potential participants recruited from dementia special care units at nine long-term care facilities in central and northern Taiwan, 98 met the operational definition of IA and were included in the PWD with IA group.

Role of axial muscles in powering mouth expansion during suction feeding in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides).

Suction-feeding fishes capture food by fast and forceful expansion of the mouth cavity, and axial muscles probably provide substantial power for this feeding behavior. Dorsal expansion of the mouth cavity can only be powered by the epaxial muscles, but both the sternohyoid, shortening against an immobile pectoral girdle to retract the hyoid, and the hypaxial muscles, shortening to retract both the pectoral girdle and hyoid, could contribute ventral expansion power. To determine whether hypaxial muscles generate power for ventral expansion, and the rostrocaudal extent of axial muscle shortening…

The redefinition of failure to thrive from a case study perspective.

Explaining failure to thrive (FTT) in dichotomous terms--organic versus non-organic --no longer applies in the context of modern pediatric nursing. FTT has turned out to be much more multifaceted. One infant's story illustrates the complexities and long-term ramifications of a pediatric feeding disorder and the challenges faced by health care professionals and families in their care. The story illustrates how physiologic, sensorimotor, and behavioral issues can all impact a child's inability to gain weight as expected. With greater understanding, pediatric nurses can appreciate their role as m

Early weaning disrupts feeding patterns in female juvenile rats through 5HT-system modulations.

Convergent evidence in literature shows that rapid disruption of maternal care and breastfeeding due to an early weaning protocol changes the development of several neurobehavioral patterns in rodents, including the circadian pattern of feeding. The serotoninergic system has been associated with the control of feeding patterns. Therefore, we aim to evaluate the patterns of feeding, the mRNA expression of 5 H T-1b, 5 H T-2c, and SERT on the hypothalamus, brainstem, and the body weight of female juvenile Wistar rats, submitted to early (PND15) or regular (PND30) weaning. The results demonstrate

Drug specificity in drug versus food choice in male rats.

Although different classes of drug differ in their mechanisms of reinforcement and effects on behavior, little research has focused on differences in self-administration behaviors maintained by users of these drugs. Persistent drug choice despite available reinforcement alternatives has been proposed to model behavior relevant to addiction. The present study used a within-subjects procedure, where male rats (Long-Evans, N = 16) were given a choice between cocaine (1.0 mg/kg/infusion) and food (a single 45-mg grain pellet) or between heroin (0.02 mg/kg/infusion) and food in separate phases (dru

Social reversal of immunosenescence in honey bee workers.

A striking example of immunosenescence is seen in the honey bee (Apis mellifera) worker caste. The bees' age-associated transition from hive duties to more risky foraging activities is linked to a dramatic decline in immunity. Explicitly, it has been shown that an increase in the juvenile hormone (JH) level, which accompanies onset of foraging behavior, induces extensive hemocyte death through nuclear pycnosis. Here, we demonstrate that foragers that are forced to revert to hive-tasks show reversal of immunosenescence, i.e. a recovery of immunity with age. This recovery, which is triggered by

Do impulse control difficulties moderate the relationship between intermittent fasting and disordered eating?

BACKGROUND: Recent findings suggest positive associations between intermittent fasting (IF, i.e., an eating pattern that consists of alternating between consuming and abstaining calories over specified periods of time) and disordered eating (DE), including binge eating, laxative use, and self-induced vomiting. However, as not all individuals who engage in IF present with DE, the current study aimed to investigate whether 1) IF was associated with elevated DE, and 2) impulse control difficulties differentially predict DE in intermittent fasters compared to non-intermittent fasters. METHODS: Pa

Atypical maternal cradling laterality in an impoverished South African population.

Human studies consistently report a 60%-80% maternal left cradling preference. The dominant explanation points to an engagement of the emotionally more-attuned right brain. In contrast, we found equal incidences of left (31.3%), right (34.3%) and no-preference (34.3%) cradling in an impoverished South African population living under adverse conditions characterized by extreme dangers. We found striking differences on the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) between mothers with no cradling laterality preference and mothers with either a left or right preference. In several mammals a homologous left pr

Prevalence and characteristics of orthorexia nervosa in a sample of university students in Italy.

AIMS: Orthorexia nervosa (ON) has been recently defined as a pathological approach to feeding related to healthiness concerns and purity of food and/or feeding habits. This condition recently showed an increasing prevalence particularly among young adults. In order to investigate the prevalence of ON and its relationship with gender and nutritional style among young adults, we explored a sample of students from the University of Pisa, Italy. METHODS: Assessments included the ORTO-15 questionnaire and a socio-demographic and eating habits form. Subjects were dichotomized for eating habits (i.e

Premastication and length for age among children under 24 months in Laos.

Premastication of infant food by caregivers is common in Laos. Premastication is hypothesized to have both positive and negative implications for children, but the net effect of premastication on child health and nutrition is largely unknown because of a lack of research. This study quantitatively describes premastication in 5 provinces of Laos and examines the associations between premastication and the length of young children. We analyzed cross-sectional data from the Laos 2015 Food and Nutrition Security Survey to characterize premastication among children under 2 years of age (n = 1,661)

Associations between weight suppression and dimensions of eating disorder psychopathology in a multisite sample.

Evidence suggests that weight suppression, the difference between an individual's highest historical body weight and current body weight, may play a role in the etiology and/or maintenance of eating disorders (EDs), and may also impact ED treatment. However, there are limited findings regarding the association between weight suppression and dimensions of ED psychopathology, particularly in multi-diagnostic ED samples. Participants were 1748 adults (94% female) from five sites with a variety of DSM-IV ED diagnoses who completed the Eating Disorder Questionnaire, a self-report measure of various

Abnormal eating behaviors in adolescent and young adult women from southern Brazil: reassessment after four years.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether abnormal eating behaviors in young women could predict eating disorders after 4 years. METHOD: 56 women were identified as presenting abnormal eating behaviors in a cross-sectional study (Eating Attitudes Test-26 and Edinburgh Bulimic Investigation Test). They were matched for age and neighborhood to two controls (n = 112). Four years later, they were re-assessed with the two screening questionnaires plus the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI 2.1). RESULTS: Women with abnormal eating behaviors at baseline showed a high probability of present

Anti-Mitochondrial and Insecticidal Effects of Artemisinin against Drosophila melanogaster.

Artemisinin (ART) is an endoperoxide molecule derived from the medicinal plant Artemisia annua L. and is clinically used as an antimalarial drug. As a secondary metabolite, the benefit of ART production to the host plant and the possible associated mechanism are not understood. It has previously been reported that Artemisia annua L. extract or ART can inhibit both insect feeding behaviors and growth; however, it is not known whether these effects are independent of each other, i.e., if growth inhibition is a direct outcome of the drug's antifeeding activity. Using the lab model organism Drosop…
