BACKGROUND: Pediculosis, caused by head lice (Pediculidae: Pediculus humanus var. capitis), is experiencing a global resurgence, with the prevalence in primary schools averaging as high as 40% in some areas regardless of socioeconomic factors. Control efforts using chemical treatments are becoming increasingly ineffective, with insecticide resistance recorded in several countries. Prevention using repellents and oils would be useful if they limited transmission. Many commercially available substances reputedly have effective repellent qualities, but remain untested.

Fipronil (FPN), a widely used insecticide, poses health risks through environmental contamination. Although its toxicity is increasingly recognized, the impact of fipronil on glucose metabolism remains poorly understood. In this study, mice on a normal diet (ND) or high-fat diet (HFD) received a daily oral administration of fipronil (0, 0.25, 1, or 4 mg/kg) for 35 days. Blood glucose and insulin were measured, and glucose/insulin/pyruvate tolerance tests were performed. We found that fipronil compromised glucose tolerance in mice fed an ND. Gut microbiota composition was assessed by 16S rRNA s

Malaria remains a major public health challenge due to drug and insecticide resistance, underscoring the need for novel therapies with distinct mechanisms of action. In this study, silver nanoparticles were green-synthesized using the brown marine algae Padina tetrastromatica (Ag-PT) and evaluated through integrated in vitro, in vivo, metabolomics, network pharmacology, and in silico approaches. Ag-PT showed potent antiplasmodial activity, with significantly lower IC50 values and superior parasite suppression compared to chemically synthesized silver nanoparticles. Untargeted metabolomics reve…

Chagas disease control relies on chemical interventions, currently compromised by insecticide resistance. Triatoma virus (TrV) emerges as a biological candidate, requiring standardized methodologies to purify, quantify, and relate viral doses to biological effects in triatomines. We established a comprehensive protocol for the quantitative study of TrV using Rhodnius prolixus as a model, combining physical purification via sucrose gradients and absolute quantification by qPCR targeting the TrVgp1 gene to link viral load with host survival. Primers were validated, and a plasmid standard curve w…

The development of smart systems for pesticidal delivery presents a significant advancement in enhancing the utilization efficiency of pesticides and mitigating environmental risks. Here an acid-responsive pesticidal delivery system using microspheres formed by the self-assembly of halloysite clay nanotubes (HNTs) is proposed. Insecticide avermectin (AVM) and herbicide prometryn (PMT) are used as two models of hydrophobic pesticide and encapsulated within the porous microspheres, followed by a coating of tannic acid/iron (TA/FeIII) complex films to generate two controlled-release pesticides, n

The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are essential for regulating various physiological processes and insecticide resistance across different living organisms. ABCG subfamily genes have diverse functions in insects, but little is known about the function of ABCGs in a serious agricultural pest, Bactrocera dorsalis. In this study, 15 BdABCG genes were identified, and BdABCG6 and BdABCG11 were highly expressed in the pupal and adult stages, especially during the transition period from pupae to adults. Silencing of these two genes resulted in a significant reduction of egg production in B.…

Blood-feeding arthropods, particularly ticks and mosquitoes are considered the most important vectors of arthropod-borne diseases affecting humans and animals. While feeding on blood meals, arthropods are exposed to high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) since heme and other blood components can induce oxidative stress. Different ROS have important roles in interactions among the pathogens, vectors, and hosts. ROS influence various metabolic processes of the arthropods and some have detrimental effects. In this review, we investigate the various roles of ROS in these arthropods, includin

Lice are common production-limiting ectoparasites affecting livestock. Up-to-date data on their prevalence and spatial distribution on farms in Great Britain is important given that prevalence is believed to be increasing as a result of insecticide resistance. Here the prevalence of farms reporting lice, and factors associated with louse presence, were assessed using a retrospective questionnaire. For sheep and cattle farms, 16.1 % and 15.8 % reported lice on their livestock, respectively. Beef farms were more likely to report lice than dairy farms, with a prevalence of 18.0 % and 7.8 %, respe…

INTRODUCTION: Unprecedented global efforts to prevent malaria morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa have saved hundreds of thousands of lives across the continent in the last two decades. This study aims to determine how the comparative efficacy and safety of available malaria control interventions intended to improve maternal and child health outcomes have changed over time considering the varied epidemiological contexts on the continent.
METHODS: We will review all randomised controlled trials that investigated malaria control interventions in pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa an

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus is an invasive mosquito species of global medical concern as its distribution has recently expanded to Africa, the Americas and Europe. In the absence of prophylaxis protecting human populations from emerging arboviruses transmitted by this mosquito species, the most straightforward control measures rely on the suppression or manipulation of vector natural populations. A number of environmental-friendly methods using mass releases of sterilizing males are currently under development. However, these strategies are still lacking an efficient sexing method required fo

Investigations of deleterious effects on non-target species, including earthworms, have been conducted for a number of pesticides, but there is a need for additional assessments of potential adverse effects. In the present study, the acute toxicity of eight pesticides to the earthworm Eisenia andrei was assessed and compared. The exposures were conducted using the filter paper contact toxicity method. Based on the 48-h LC50 values, one pesticide was classified as supertoxic (combined fungicide containing difenoconazole and fludioxonil), four as extremely toxic (combined herbicide containing pe

The change of the malaria control intervention policy in South Africa (SA), re-introduction of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), may be … alaria cases observed over a long period suggests that the continued usage of DDT did not result in insecticide resistance as earlier anticipated. Although malaria remains one of the most important infectious causes of morbidity and mortality world-wide with 40% of the global population at risk, significant progress has been made toward elimination, notably with the development and use of rapid diagnostic tests, insecticide-treated bed nets, indoor residual spraying, and artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs). P. falciparum infection remains the most common cause of severe infection and death, but non-P. P. falciparum infections, including the recently emerged 5(th) plasmodium species, P. knowlesi, are increasingly recognized as

Zea mays L., a globally vital C₄ cereal, is increasingly threatened by fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), a destructive and insecticide-resistant pest. Laboratory bioassays on 4th-instar FAW larvae evaluated acute toxicity (LC50 and LC90) and detoxification enzyme activity. The indiscriminate use of synthetic insecticides for mosquito control has resulted in significant challenges, such as environmental pollution and growing insecticide resistance. In response, there is increasing interest in eco-friendly alternatives like plant-based larvicides.
