Behaviour of metals under the conditions of roasting MSW incinerator fly ash with chlorinating agents.

A total elemental analysis was performed on a municipal solid waste (MSW) fly ash sample, before and after it was treated at 1000 degrees C, to reveal the metal distribution between the volatile matter and the ash residue. Metals such as Pb, Zn, Cd, and to a lesser degree, Cr, Mn and Ni, were volatilized. Addition of chlorinating agents generally increased the volatility of certain elements. More acid resistant compounds were formed in the ash residue after the heat treatment using CaCl2 as a chlorinating agent. The efficiencies of volatilization of the metals, using Cl2 as a chlorinating agen

Multifunctional theranostic magnetic PLGA nanoparticles encapsulating cyclosporine A: addressing challenges in pancreas transplantation for type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a high-incidence chronic autoimmune disease, with patients requiring lifelong insulin therapy. In the most severe cases, pancreas transplantation (PTA) arises as the first choice of treatment for these patients in the hope of achieving insulin independence. However, the long-term success of PTA is hindered by ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) and immune rejection, both of which limit graft survival. To address these challenges, we have developed multifunctional theranostic nanoparticles (t-PLGA NPs) co-encapsulating Fe3O4 and MnO NPs, along with cyclosporine A, an immu

A hypoxia-activated and tumor microenvironment-remodeling nanoplatform for augmenting sonodynamic-chemodynamic-chemotherapy of breast cancer.

The tumor microenvironment (TME) offers a promising approach to enhancing cancer therapy by altering the conditions that support tumor growth and immune evasion. However, tumors are highly heterogeneous, and the TME can vary greatly even within different regions of the same tumor. Moreover, tumors can have evolving resistance mechanisms that limit the effectiveness of therapies. In this paper, we have designed a multifunctional nanoparticle named Lip-Ce6-MnO2-TPZ, making sonodynamic therapy (SDT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT), and hypoxia-activated prodrugs work synergistically to maximize cance

Brain microenvironment-remodeling nanomedicine improves cerebral glucose metabolism, mitochondrial activity and synaptic function in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

The development of disease-modifying therapeutics for Alzheimer's disease remains challenging due to the complex pathology and the presence of the blood-brain barrier. Previously we have described the investigation of a brain-penetrating multifunctional bioreactive nanoparticle system capable of remodeling the hypoxic and inflammatory brain microenvironment and reducing beta-amyloid plaques improving cognitive function in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. Despite the linkage of hypoxia and inflammation to metabolic alteration, the effects of this system on modulating cerebral glucose metab

Development of uMUC-1 Targeted NEMO Particles with pH-Activatable MRI Signals for Enhanced Detection of Malignant Breast Cancer Cells.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) detects more breast cancers than mammography due to its superior soft tissue contrast; however, it still misdiagnoses 40% of benign tumors as malignant due to clinically used nonspecific contrast agents (e.g., gadolinium chelates). To overcome this limitation, we developed receptor-targeted, pH-sensitive Nano-Encapsulated Manganese Oxide (NEMO) particles as an alternative T1-weighted MRI contrast agent. A breast cancer targeting peptide, EPPT, against underglycosylated mucin-1, promotes preferential endocytosis of NEMO particles by malignant cells and specific

FePt/MnO2@PEG Nanoparticles as Multifunctional Radiosensitizers for Enhancing Ferroptosis and Alleviating Hypoxia in Osteosarcoma Therapy.

Radiotherapy (RT) is a widely used cancer treatment, and the use of metal-based nanoradiotherapy sensitizers has demonstrated promise in enhancing its efficacy. However, achieving effective accumulation of these sensitizers within tumors and overcoming resistance induced by the hypoxic tumor microenvironment remain challenging issues. In this study, we developed FePt/MnO2@PEG nanoparticles with multiple radiosensitizing mechanisms, including high-atomic-number element-mediated radiation capture, catalase-mimicking oxygenation, and GSH depletion-induced ferroptosis. Both in vitro and in vivo ex

Yeast-Inspired Orally-Administered Nanocomposite Scavenges Oxidative Stress and Restores Gut Immune Homeostasis for Inflammatory Bowel Disease Treatment.

Excessive oxidative stress, dysregulated immune homeostasis, and disruption of the intestinal epithelial barrier are crucial features of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Traditional treatments focusing solely on inflammation resolution remain unsatisfactory. Herein, a yeast-inspired orally administered nanocomposite was developed. First, the MD@MPDA core was fabricated by integrating manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanozymes onto diallyl trisulfide (H2S prodrug)-loaded mesoporous polydopamine nanoparticles (MPDA). Then, yeast cell wall (YCW) was chosen to encapsulate MD@MPDA, namely, YMD@MPDA. The β

A Self-Amplifying MOF Nanoplatform for Cancer Immunotherapy Synergizing Starvation-Enhanced Cuproptosis and cGAS-STING Activation.

Cancer immunotherapy has emerged as a revolutionary approach that harnesses both innate and adaptive immune systems to combat tumors. However, the limited clinical response rates underscore the urgent need for strategies to enhance therapeutic efficacy. Metal ions such as copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn) have garnered increasing attention due to their roles in immune modulation and induction of cancer cell death. Cuproptosis, a recently identified form of programmed cell death triggered by intracellular Cu overload, disrupts mitochondrial respiration, thereby inducing immunogenic cell death and

Combined M1 macrophage inhibition and thermotherapy for controlled fibroplasia and accelerated wound repair via an oxygenating ROS-responsive hydrogel.

Wound healing remains a major clinical challenge, as hypoxia, oxidative stress, and immune dysregulation collectively impede tissue regeneration. To overcome these multifactorial barriers, we developed an injectable hydrogel (FH-PMC-T) by integrating multifunctional PDA@MnO2@CuO (PMC) nanoparticles and taurine into a Fe3+ crosslinked Farsi gum-hyaluronic acid (FH) network. The hydrogel exhibits excellent photothermal conversion efficiency, catalase-like activity, and antioxidant capacity, enabling synergistic redox modulation and immune microenvironment regulation. Taurine is responsively rele

Glucose oxidase and MnO2 functionalized liposome for catalytic radiosensitization enhanced synergistic breast cancer therapy.

In recent years, the integration of radiotherapy and nanocatalytic medicine has gained widespread attention in the treatment of breast cancer. Herein, the glucose oxidase (GOx) and MnO2 nanoparticles co-modified multifunctional liposome of GOx-MnO2@Lip was constructed for enhanced radiotherapy. Introduction of GOx would not only elevate the glucose consumption to starve the cancer cells, but also increased the endogenous H2O2 level. Meanwhile, high intracellular GSH concentration facilitated the release of Mn2+ to amplify the cytotoxic ·OH through cascade catalytic reactions within the tumor m

Macrophage membrane-functionalized manganese dioxide nanomedicine for synergistic treatment of atherosclerosis by mitigating inflammatory storms and promoting cholesterol efflux.

Atherosclerosis (AS) poses a significant threat to human life and health. However, conventional antiatherogenic medications exhibit insufficient targeting precision and restricted therapeutic effectiveness. Moreover, during the progression of AS, macrophages undergo polarization toward the proinflammatory M1 phenotype and generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) to accelerate the occurrence of inflammatory storms, and ingest excess lipids to form foam cells by inhibiting cholesterol efflux. In our study, we developed a macrophage membrane-functionalized hollow mesoporous manganese dioxide nanome

TME-Activated MnO2/Pt Nanoplatform of Hydroxyl Radical and Oxygen Generation to Synergistically Promote Radiotherapy and MR Imaging of Glioblastoma.

PURPOSE: Radiotherapy (RT) is currently recognized as an important treatment for glioblastoma (GBM), however, it is associated with several challenges. One of these challenges is the radioresistance caused by hypoxia, whereas the other is the low conversion efficiency of the strongly oxidized hydroxyl radical (•OH), which is produced by the decomposition of water due to high-energy X-ray radiation. These factors significantly limit the clinical effectiveness of radiotherapy. RESULTS: To address these limitations, we developed a highly stable and efficient nanoplatform (MnO2/Pt@BSA). Compared

A Hybrid Nanoadjuvant Simultaneously Depresses PD-L1/TGF-β1 and Activates cGAS-STING Pathway to Overcome Radio-Immunotherapy Resistance.

Currently, certain cancer patients exhibit resistance to radiotherapy due to reduced DNA damage under hypoxic conditions and acquired immune tolerance triggered by transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and membrane-localized programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1). Meanwhile, cytoplasm-distributed PD-L1 induces radiotherapy resistance through accelerating DNA damage repair (DDR). However, the disability of clinically used PD-L1 antibodies in inhibiting cytoplasm-distributed PD-L1 limits their effectiveness. Therefore, a nanoadjuvant is developed to sensitize cancer to radiotherapy via multi-level i

An endogenous oxygen self-supplied nanoplatform with GSH-depleted and NIR-II triggered electron-hole separation for enhanced photocatalytic anti-tumor therapy.

The use of artificial enzymes and light energy in photocatalytic therapy, a developing drug-free therapeutic approach, can treat malignant tumors in vivo. However, the relatively deficient oxygen concentration in the tumor microenvironment (TME) restrains their further tumor treatment capability. Herein, a novel nanoplatform with Cu7S4@Au nanocatalyst coated by MnO2 was successfully designed. After 1064 nm light irradiation, the designed nanocatalyst can promote the separation of light generated electron-hole pairs, resulting in ROS generation and tumor cell apoptosis. The MnO2 shelled nanopla

Airway exposure to lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide particles induces alterations in lung microenvironment and potential kidney and liver damage in mice.

With the increasing use of lithium-ion batteries, the exposure and health effects of lithium nickel manganate cobalt (NMC), a popular cathode material for the battery, have attracted widespread attention. However, the main absorption routes and target organs of NMC are unknown. This study aims to systematically investigate the main absorption routes and target organs of NMC. Male adult C57BL/6 J mice were subjected to acute exposure to NMC particles (Ni: Mn: Co = 5: 3: 2, mass median geometric diameter 9.15 μm) by intragastric administration, transdermal drug delivery, and oropharyngeal aspira

Manganese Dioxide-Entrapping Dendrimers Co-Deliver Protein and Nucleotide for Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Guided Chemodynamic/Starvation/Immune Therapy of Tumors.

Development of a nanoscale drug delivery system that can simultaneously exert efficient tumor therapeutic efficacy while creating the desired antitumor immune responses is still challenging. Herein, we report the use of a manganese dioxide (MnO2)-entrapping dendrimer nanocarrier to codeliver glucose oxidase (GOx) and cyclic GMP-AMP (cGAMP), an agonist of the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) for improved tumor chemodynamic/starvation/immune therapy. Methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG)- and phenylboronic acid (PBA)-modified generation 5 (G5) poly(amidoamine) dendrimers were first synthesi

A facile foaming-polymerization strategy to prepare 3D MnO2 modified biochar-based porous hydrogels for efficient removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II).

A novel three dimensional MnO2 modified biochar-based porous hydrogel (MBCG) was fabricated to overcome the low sorption capacity and difficulty in solid-liquid separation of biochar (BC) for Cd(II) and Pb(II) removal. BC was initially modified by a rapid redox reaction between KMnO4 and Mn(II) acetate, and then incorporated into a polyacrylamide gel network via a rapid and facile free-radical polymerization. A foaming method was deliberately introduced during the fabrication to establish interpenetrated porous structure inside the network. Various characterizations were employed to examine th
