Statistical methods for estimating the probability of spontaneous abortion in observational studies--analyzing pregnancies exposed to coumarin derivatives.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous abortion rates are of general interest when investigating pregnancy outcome. In most studies observations are left truncated as pregnant women enter with a delay of several weeks after conception. Apart from spontaneous abortion pregnancy may end in induced abortion or live birth. These outcomes are considered as competing events (risks). Although statistical methods for handling this setting are available since more than 10 years, studies on pregnancy outcome after drug exposure usually report crude rates of spontaneous abortions, ignoring left truncation and competing

Application of the principal stratification approach to the Faenza randomized experiment on breast self-examination.

In this article we present an extended framework based on the principal stratification approach (Frangakis and Rubin, 2002, Biometrics 58, 21-29), for the analysis of data from randomized experiments which suffer from treatment noncompliance, missing outcomes following treatment noncompliance, and "truncation by death." We are not aware of any previous work that addresses all these complications jointly. This framework is illustrated in the context of a randomized trial of breast self-examination.

Problem gambling in Australian PTSD treatment-seeking veterans.

This study explored gambling among Australian veterans entering posttraumatic stress treatment programs (n = 153). Twenty-eight percent reached the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) criteria for probable problem gambling, as did 17% on the DSM-IV gambling scale (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition; American Psychiatric Association, 1994). Almost all problem gamblers reported gambling to escape problems in other areas of their lives. The strongest independent predictor of problem gambling was gambling weekly or more often on electronic gaming machines. There wa

A class of goodness of fit tests for a copula based on bivariate right-censored data.

The copula of a bivariate distribution, constructed by making marginal transformations of each component, captures all the information in the bivariate distribution about the dependence between two variables. For frailty models for bivariate data the choice of a family of distributions for the random frailty corresponds to the choice of a parametric family for the copula. A class of tests of the hypothesis that the copula is in a given parametric family, with unspecified association parameter, based on bivariate right censored data is proposed. These tests are based on first making marginal Ka

Estimating and comparing diagnostic tests' accuracy when the gold standard is not binary.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Investigators often need to assess the accuracies of diagnostic tests when the gold standard is not binary-scale. The objective of this article is to describe nonparametric estimators of diagnostic test accuracy when the gold standard is continuous, ordinal, and nominal scale. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A nonparametric method of estimating and comparing the area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, proposed by DeLong et al, is extended to situations in which the gold standard is not binary. Two examples illustrate the methods. RESULTS: Measures of diagn

Using a Rasch model to examine the utility of the South Oaks Gambling Screen across clinical and community samples.

The South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS: [Am. J. Psychiatr. 144 (1987) 1184]) is one of the most widely used measures of gambling problems in epidemiological studies and clinical evaluations. In the current paper, we were able to examine the SOGS using a Rasch model with data obtained from a representative community sample and a large clinical sample. The SOGS demonstrated significant stability across community and clinical samples despite the sample differences in gambling behaviors and demographic characteristics. In the clinical sample, we demonstrated the significant agreement between DSM-IV-

Finding order in the DSM-IV nicotine dependence syndrome: a Rasch analysis.

Little is known about the relative severity or typical sequence of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV) symptoms of nicotine dependence. Using data from the National Comorbidity Study (NCS), the current study used a Rasch logistic item response model to assess the unidimensionality of the construct of nicotine dependence, to identify which symptoms are associated with high levels of dependence, and to determine whether the dependence symptoms and typical symptom patterns are influenced by age, gender, race and income level. The nicotine dependence symptoms provided reasonable coverage of

An evaluation of the NINCDS-ADRDA neuropsychological criteria for the assessment of Alzheimer's disease: a confirmatory factor analysis of single versus multi-factor models.

Neuropsychological test batteries are frequently used to assess the nature and severity of cognitive deficits among patients with early Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and related disorders. The NINCDS-ADRDA criteria are among the most widely used guidelines to diagnose dementia (McKhann et al.,1984). These criteria specify eight distinct areas of neuropsychological function that should be evaluated in patients with suspected cognitive impairment. Recent studies have suggested that neuropsychological deficits observed in AD may be explained by a single general factor related to memory deficits or to

The structure of DSM-III-R schizotypal personality disorder diagnosed by direct interviews.

Confirmatory factor analysis techniques were applied to test how competing models (unifactorial, bifactorial, and trifactorial) could be used to explain the structure of schizotypal disorder as defined in DSM-III-R and DSM-IV. Subjects were 538 nonpsychotic psychiatric outpatients and a replication sample of 225 nonpsychiatric patients and control subjects, interviewed by clinicians using the Structured Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders. The study found that the best-fit solution encompassed three factors: cognitive-perceptual, interpersonal, and oddness. Future studies may benefit

Missingness in Eligibility Criteria for Target Trial Emulation in EHR With Survival Outcomes.

In certain settings, when conducting a randomized trial would be infeasible, electronic health records (EHR) can be used to emulate a target trial and estimate causal effects of an intervention. This process involves specifying the elements of a hypothetical trial protocol and applying these to the design of an observational study conducted with EHR data (or other observational data source). One element of target trial specification includes defining eligibility criteria. However, defining the eligible population with EHR can be complicated by missingness in eligibility-defining variables. Mul

Estimating effects on cumulative incidence probabilities by direct polytomous regression and polytomous log-odds product.

In competing-risks analysis, modeling each cause separately may yield specification of cumulative incidence functions that are not jointly coherent, because the resulting cause-specific probabilities need not satisfy the natural sum-to-one constraint. We address this problem by introducing a direct polytomous regression approach that models all causes jointly and enforces coherence through a reparameterization based on polytomous log-odds products. Our approach is applicable to semiparametric models with common multiplicative effects over time as well as models focused on a specific time point

Doubly Robust Estimators for Heterogeneous Treatment Effects in Heteroskedastic Survival Data.

Given the increasing interest focus on personalized medicine, a number of advanced statistical methods have been developed for estimating heterogeneous treatment effects (HTEs). However, methods for estimating HTEs in medical applications are limited, as they often involve potentially censored and heteroskedastic survival outcomes. Ignoring censoring and heteroskedasticity may introduce bias into HTEs. Therefore, in this study, we proposed two doubly robust (DR) methods for estimating HTEs based on nonparametric failure time (NFT) Bayesian additive regression trees (BART). Our contributions ar

metaConvert: an automatic suite for estimation of 11 different effect size measures and flexible conversion across them.

A fundamental pillar of science is the estimation of the effect size of associations. However, this task is sometimes difficult and error-prone. To facilitate this process, the R package metaConvert automatically calculates and flexibly converts multiple effect size measures. It applies more than 120 formulas to convert any relevant input data into Cohen's d, Hedges' g, mean difference, odds ratio, risk ratio, incidence rate ratio, correlation coefficient, Fisher's r-to-z transformed correlation coefficient, variability ratio, coefficient of variation ratio, or number needed to treat. Modeling exposures of medications used episodically during pregnancy: Triptans as a motivating example.

PURPOSE: To assess the validity of dispensed prescription to classify exposure to medications used episodically during pregnancy, and to explore individual trajectories of episodic medication use across pregnancy, using triptans for migraine as the motivating example. METHODS: We compared self-reported triptan use during pregnancy in The Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) to dispensed prescriptions in The Norwegian Prescription Database and calculated Cohen's kappa coefficient (κ), sensitivity, specificity and predictive values using MoBa as reference standard. We used gro

On the Identifiability of Diagnostic Classification Models.

This paper establishes fundamental results for statistical analysis based on diagnostic classification models (DCMs). The results are developed at a high level of generality and are applicable to essentially all diagnostic classification models. In particular, we establish identifiability results for various modeling parameters, notably item response probabilities, attribute distribution, and Q-matrix-induced partial information structure. These results are stated under a general setting of latent class models. Through a nonparametric Bayes approach, we construct an estimator that can be shown

Factor Structure of Teacher Ratings of the ODD Symptoms in Children.

This study used confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to determine the best model for Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) symptoms in children aged 3 to 15 years, as presented in the Disruptive Behavior Rating Scale. Teachers' ratings of the ODD symptoms of 213 children from general community schools in Australia were obtained. The findings provided most support for a bifactor model based on Stringaris and Goodman's [1] three-factor model (primary factors for irritable, hurtful, and headstrong). The general factor, but not the group factors in the model, showed high omega hierarchical and explain

Joint frailty models for zero-inflated recurrent events in the presence of a terminal event.

Recurrent event data arise frequently in longitudinal medical studies. In many situations, there are a large portion of subjects without any recurrent events, manifesting the "zero-inflated" nature of the data. Some of the zero events may be "structural zeros" as patients are unsusceptible to recurrent events, while others are "random zeros" due to censoring before any recurrent events. On the other hand, there often exists a terminal event which may be correlated with the recurrent events. In this article, we propose two joint frailty models for zero-inflated recurrent events in the presence

Joint modeling approach for semicompeting risks data with missing nonterminal event status.

Semicompeting risks data, where a subject may experience sequential non-terminal and terminal events, and the terminal event may censor the non-terminal event but not vice versa, are widely available in many biomedical studies. We consider the situation when a proportion of subjects' non-terminal events is missing, such that the observed data become a mixture of "true" semicompeting risks data and partially observed terminal event only data. An illness-death multistate model with proportional hazards assumptions is proposed to study the relationship between non-terminal and terminal events, an
